The development of an electrochemical immunosensor utilizing chicken IgY anti-spike antibody for the detection of SARS-CoV-2
This paper introduces a novel approach for detecting the SARS-CoV-2 recombinant spike protein combining a label free electrochemical impedimetric immunosensor with the use of purified chicken IgY antibodies. The sensor employs three electrodes and is functionalized with an anti-S IgY antibody, ELISA and immunoblot assays confirmed the positive response of chicken immunized with SARS-CoV2 S antigen. The developed immunosensor is effective in detecting SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal clinical samples from suspected cases. The key advantage of this biosensor is its remarkable sensitivity, and its capability of detecting very low concentrations of the target analyte, with a detection limit of 5.65 pg/mL. This attribute makes it highly suitable for practical point-of-care (POC) applications, particularly in low analyte count clinical scenarios, without requiring amplification. Furthermore, the biosensor has a wide dynamic range of detection, spanning from 11.56 to 740 ng/mL, which makes it applicable for sample analysis in a typical clinical setting.
The mediating role of perceived value on electronic service quality and customer satisfaction: Evidence from Malaysia
The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of customers’ perceived value in mediating the relationship between Electronic Service Quality (ESQ) and customer satisfaction in online banking in Malaysia. The research model is developed based on the disconfirmation theory. Non-probability purposive sampling was adopted for data collection. A cross-sectional technique with a self-administered questionnaire was applied. The unit of analysis in this study is bank customers using online banking in Selangor, Malaysia. One hundred twenty-eight usable responses were received and analyzed. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was applied to analyze the data. Findings showed that the variance in customer satisfaction can be significantly explained via E-service quality dimensions (R2 = 0.52). The ease of use, security, reliability, responsiveness (ESQ) have a significant and positive impact on customer satisfaction among online banking users (p = 0.000). Furthermore, it was found that the customers’ perceived value significantly mediates the relationship between E-service quality and customer satisfaction (p-value = 0.0004). The experimental findings for this paper strengthen and expand the theoretical understanding of the relationship between ESQ, customer perceived value, and customer satisfaction that helps the banks in Malaysia to perform more successfully in the rapid business environment. This study also contributed to diminishing the gap in the ESQ literature between developed and developing countries, especially in the Malaysian context.
Strategic planning of human resources as an entrance to enhance marketing capabilities: A case study of King Abdullah II Center for Design and Development (KADDB)
The study aims to identify the impact of strategic planning of human resources in enhancing marketing capabilities at the King Abdullah II Center for Design and Development (KADDB). The descriptive and analytical methods were used to understand the effect of human resource planning in enhancing marketing capabilities. The research population includes all departments in the respective center. As for the sample, it consisted of 65 marketing and sales managers and workers in the marketing departments. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the research data. The results showed a significant effect of strategic planning for human resources in enhancing marketing capabilities at KADDB (R2 = 0.619, sig < 0.05). It was also found that strategic planning for human resources contributes to increasing the leader ability to do their work diligently and proficiently and improving the ability to organize work, distribute duties to subordinates, and coordinate efforts. Therefore, this study recommends giving strategic planning to human resources the importance it deserves for its active role in enhancing marketing capabilities at KADDB.
Mobile phone radiation might alter gene expression in the oral squamous epithelial cells
Accumulating evidence has shown that radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitted by mobile phones is a potential factor for DNA damage. Whether RFR affects the gene expression of human genes still requires further research. This may help in understanding the mechanisms of action of this radiation. On the assumption that expression of BAMBI and Survivin in the oral squamous epithelial cells might be modified in response to RF electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure, the current study was conducted on a group of young university student volunteers. Statistical analysis of the RT-PCR data indicated that no significant association (P value Ë 0.05) exists between the expression of either gene, and neither the length of history nor the frequency of the phone use. Although no clear RF-EMF signature on gene expression could be detected in this in this preliminary study, it is one of the few studies indicating that molecular-level changes might take place in humans in response to chronic mobile phone EMR exposure. Further investigations in this field are warranted.
Knowledge management systems usage: application of diffusion of innovation theory
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of technological antecedents on the usage of decision makers for the implemented knowledge management system (KMS) amongst Jordanian banks. This study extends the investigation by assessing the influence of knowledge or information quality on KMS usage. This study aims to assess whether knowledge or information quality is significantly correlated to system compatibility, relative advantage and complexity (technological antecedents).Design/methodology/approachThe study model was developed by using Rogers’ diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory, on which seven hypotheses were developed. To examine these research hypotheses, a self-administered questionnaire was carried out with 341 decision makers who are using the KMS to perform their job-related activities. Structural equation modelling analysis of moment structures software was used for data analysis.FindingsThe findings revealed that decision makers usage of the implemented KMS’s is affected significantly by relative advantages, system complexity and knowledge quality, but not system compatibility. Moreover, the findings showed that knowledge quality is significantly correlated with DOI technological antecedents.Practical implicationsBank managements are now in a better position to understand what kind of resources and supports are needed to achieve the maximum pay-off from KMS usage within their banks. This study has proved that it is not sufficient for Jordanian banks to focus solely on the system quality; they must also take the quality of knowledge or information (system output) as a critical factor that can affect their investments in KMS’s.Originality/valueThis study is one of the limited conducted studies to investigate the importance of KMS usage and related antecedents in the Arab world; particularly, in the context of the Jordanian banking sector. The findings of this study have contributed to the Jordanian financial sector for its vital evaluation of the KMS actual usage behaviour. Findings can be used by the Jordanian ministry of finance to improve the understanding of the factors influencing KMS usage in the financial sector. This study has contributed to reducing the gap of DOI literature amongst developed and developing countries, particularly in the Jordanian context.
HR practices and turnover intention; the mediating role of organizational commitment in Tehran: a cross-sectional study version 2; peer review: 2 approved, 1 not approved
Background: Employees are increasingly being recognised as a valuable source of information, especially in knowledge-based businesses. Businesses, however, suffer financial and organisational memory losses related to re-hiring and training new staff, and lost productivity and intellectual property because of employee turnover. Hence, employee turnover should be considered an essential part of human resource management. Furthermore, employees' trust in management and human resource (HR) practices substantially impact organisational commitment (OC). Thus, anticipating employee commitment and turnover intentions is crucial, as people are the sole source for knowledge-based firms to maintain their competitive advantage. In the context of selected Tehran Renewable Energy (RE) firms, this study investigated the mediating impact of OC on the relationship between HR practices (recruitment and selection; training and development opportunities; performance appraisal and evaluation; teamwork; compensation and pay; and job security) and employee turnover intention. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study in Tehran that involved 90 experts and knowledgeable employees from four of Tehran's top RE businesses. A questionnaire was distributed to collect data which was later analysed with correlation, regression and bootstrapping analyses. Results: All six dimensions of HR practices were discovered to have an indirect impact on turnover intention and a direct impact on OC. OC among employees has an indirect effect on turnover intention. It was also revealed that the training and development opportunity has the most considerable effect on OC and turnover intention. OC was not found as a mediator between HR practices and turnover intention. Conclusions: The outcomes of this study showed that both training and development opportunities; and pay and compensation structure were found to be two significant components of HR practices in the relationship with OC. RE managers should employ appropriate HR strategies, particularly in these two dimensions, to improve an individual's degree of OC and reduce turnover intention.
Public health awareness: knowledge, attitude and behaviors of the public on health risks during COVID-19 pandemic in sultanate of Oman
PurposeThis study aims to measure the level of public awareness about the threat of the emerging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic among the Omani population. It also aims to investigate the mediating effect of the Omanis’ attitudes and behaviors with underlying conditions of COVID-19.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional study was conducted to collect data via an online survey of Omani citizens and residents from various geographic areas in Oman, 305 responses were received. SPSS and partial least square-structural equation modeling were used for data analysis.FindingsThe study revealed that public awareness regarding the COVID-19 pandemic was significantly influenced by people’s perceived risk, information source and health-related knowledge. Further, preventive behavior during the disease spread has a significant direct and indirect impact on their awareness. However, an insignificant mediation effect of public attitude was found between the source of information and public awareness.Research limitations/implicationsThis study is limited by the scarcity of related literature in the Omani context. It is recommended that future research complete an in-depth study of public awareness regarding COVID-19, using other constructs and/or other data collection techniques.Practical implicationsThis research will provide governmental health authorities and policymakers with a guideline to establish more efficient pandemic containment strategies to control public behavior toward the COVID-19 pandemic and curb viral prevalence.Social implicationsThis research will help in improving prevention measures against COVID-19 are recommended to be more educated through a more effective mechanism to raise public attitude regarding pandemic prevalence positively.Originality/valueThe originality of this research can be drawn from key findings that indicate that people overall gained knowledge about how to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and the accuracy of information significantly impacts public awareness.
The Role of Social Support and Patient Empowerment Through Online Health Communities in Enhancing Patient–Physician Relationship
Purpose: The goal of this project is to investigate how online health communities can improve patient-physician relationships by providing social support and patient empowerment.   Theoretical framework: Nowadays, on online health forums, patients can connect with other patients and healthcare professionals and share knowledge and experiences. However, there is a dearth of research on how patient-physician relationships might be improved via online health communities.    Design/Methodology/Approach: In this analytical study, a sample of 61 individuals receiving treatment in Jordan's private hospitals were given a questionnaire via two of the most popular health communities' Facebook pages.   Findings: The findings showed that while patient empowerment had no impact on the patient-physician connection, computer-mediated social support had an impact on that relationship. These findings support the need to suggest Jordanian online health community models that might strengthen this kind of engagement.     Research, Practical and Social Implications: Online health community providers need to be aware of the tactics they should use in these communities to strengthen the patient-physician relationship and integrate these efforts into patient treatment. Additionally, these communities can help medical practitioners ensure that patients receive the appropriate information and type of support.   Originality/Value: As online health groups grew, so did the number of patients who relied on them for information and emotional support. Although the majority of studies focused on this type of support, little is known about how it affects the patient-physician interaction.
Energy efficient integrated MEMS neural network for simultaneous sensing and computing
Biological systems seamlessly combine multiple functions in lightweight and energy-efficient structures. Such capability in synthetic structures would be desirable in numerous engineering applications such as aerospace, robotics and wearable devices. Here we report an integrated silicon-based structure configured to sense, perform different classification algorithms, and produce an action signal within the same physical layer. The algorithms are coded in the mechanical responses of the sensing elements of multiple coupled micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), simultaneously capturing acceleration measurements to produce an actuated signal. This all-in-one structure operates with zero circuitry and low power consumption. As a demonstration, we designed and fabricated a network of three MEMS neurons to successfully perform both simple signal classification and activity recognition problems (standing and sitting) with only 9.92 × 10 −17 kWh and 17.79 × 10 −19 kWh energy consumption per operation, respectively. Our approach will enable emergent technologies, such as wearable devices, to perform complex computations with power from a single battery charge. Hamed Nikfarjam and colleagues report an integrated microelectromechanical system (MEMS) hardware capable of performing simultaneous sensing, compute and produce an action signal all within the same physical layer. The researchers demonstrate that different classification algorithms can be run on the MEMs hardware, expanding MEMS applications to more advanced fields such as surgical robotics and wearable devices.
