Food Environment around Schools: A Systematic Scope Review
The present systematic scope review intended to compile state-of-the-art information about the food environment around schools, exploring the main methods used to describe the food environment around schools as well as the possible effects that this environment can promote on the health of children and adolescents. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses—extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist and guidelines were followed to ensure a robust and repeatable methodological process. A systematic search was performed in the following electronic databases: MEDLINE, Embase, Science Direct, Web of Science, LILACS, and Scopus, as well as in related articles, a manual search of reference lists and gray literature. Forty-six studies were selected. There was no standardization regarding distances from food establishments to schools, methods of analysis, and software used. The food environment around the schools was characterized by the wide availability of food establishments, especially fast food, convenience stores, supermarkets, and grocery stores known for offering a wide variety of unhealthy foods. Regarding the correlations with the health of children and adolescents, the evidence points to possible interferences of the food environment known as obesogenic, but it cannot be related only to the school environment since most of the acquisition and consumption of food usually happens around family homes. Conducting standardized and comprehensive studies evaluating food choices in the school environment and their interrelationships is very important to ensure children’s food and nutrition security and minimize negative health outcomes in the medium and long term.
Newton Method for Finding a Singularity of a Special Class of Locally Lipschitz Continuous Vector Fields on Riemannian Manifolds
We extend some results of nonsmooth analysis from the Euclidean context to the Riemannian setting. Particularly, we discuss the concepts and some properties, such as the Clarke generalized covariant derivative, upper semicontinuity, and Rademacher theorem, of locally Lipschitz continuous vector fields on Riemannian settings. In addition, we present a version of the Newton method for finding a singularity of a special class of locally Lipschitz continuous vector fields. For mild conditions, we establish the well-definedness and local convergence of the sequence generated using the method in a neighborhood of a singularity.
Il non-luogo della relazione tra famiglie e servizi per l’infanzia, nell’editoria accademica sull’educazione 0-6, in Brasile
The paper summarizes the results of a bibliographic investigation on how Brazilian academic production addresses the theme of the family (or, better, families), with particular attention to the education of children in the 0-6, and to ECEC services. The research, at the heart of which is the analysis of a selection of scientific papers published in the most qualified and representative Brazilian journals in the field of education – while not claiming to be exhaustive – was divided into three phases. 11 journals were taken into consideration, for a total of 95 issues/editions, published between 2020 and 2024, analyzing a total of 2.495 articles. Of the aforementioned contributions, only four fall within the delimited thematic scope, crossing the descriptors “Family” and “Families” and the boolean operator AND “Early Childhood Education”. After having noted the, therefore, limited national scientific production in this area and having analyzed the selected articles, we concluded that research involving the family(s) and education category does not yet have a relevant space in Brazilian academic production, which appears to be addressed this macro-topic in an overall superficial way, addressing such a complex topic in a generally banal and reductive way.
Mutually beneficial pollinator diversity and crop yield outcomes in small and large farms
Ecological intensification, or the improvement of crop yield through enhancement of biodiversity, may be a sustainable pathway toward greater food supplies. Such sustainable increases may be especially important for the 2 billion people reliant on small farms, many of which are undernourished, yet we know little about the efficacy of this approach. Using a coordinated protocol across regions and crops, we quantify to what degree enhancing pollinator density and richness can improve yields on 344 fields from 33 pollinator-dependent crop systems in small and large farms from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. For fields less than 2 hectares, we found that yield gaps could be closed by a median of 24% through higher flower-visitor density. For larger fields, such benefits only occurred at high flower-visitor richness.Worldwide, our study demonstrates that ecological intensification can create synchronous biodiversity and yield outcomes.
Comparative genomics of the major fungal agents of human and animal Sporotrichosis: Sporothrix schenckii and Sporothrix brasiliensis
Background The fungal genus Sporothrix includes at least four human pathogenic species. One of these species, S. brasiliensis , is the causal agent of a major ongoing zoonotic outbreak of sporotrichosis in Brazil. Elsewhere, sapronoses are caused by S. schenckii and S. globosa. The major aims on this comparative genomic study are: 1) to explore the presence of virulence factors in S. schenckii and S. brasiliensis ; 2) to compare S. brasiliensis, which is cat-transmitted and infects both humans and cats with S. schenckii , mainly a human pathogen; 3) to compare these two species to other human pathogens (Onygenales) with similar thermo-dimorphic behavior and to other plant-associated Sordariomycetes. Results The genomes of S. schenckii and S. brasiliensis were pyrosequenced to 17x and 20x coverage comprising a total of 32.3 Mb and 33.2 Mb, respectively. Pair-wise genome alignments revealed that the two species are highly syntenic showing 97.5% average sequence identity. Phylogenomic analysis reveals that both species diverged about 3.8-4.9 MYA suggesting a recent event of speciation. Transposable elements comprise respectively 0.34% and 0.62% of the S. schenckii and S. brasiliensis genomes and expansions of Gypsy -like elements was observed reflecting the accumulation of repetitive elements in the S. brasiliensis genome. Mitochondrial genomic comparisons showed the presence of group-I intron encoding homing endonucleases (HE’s) exclusively in S. brasiliensis . Analysis of protein family expansions and contractions in the Sporothrix lineage revealed expansion of LysM domain-containing proteins, small GTPases, PKS type1 and leucin-rich proteins. In contrast, a lack of polysaccharide lyase genes that are associated with decay of plants was observed when compared to other Sordariomycetes and dimorphic fungal pathogens, suggesting evolutionary adaptations from a plant pathogenic or saprobic to an animal pathogenic life style. Conclusions Comparative genomic data suggest a unique ecological shift in the Sporothrix lineage from plant-association to mammalian parasitism, which contributes to the understanding of how environmental interactions may shape fungal virulence. . Moreover, the striking differences found in comparison with other dimorphic fungi revealed that dimorphism in these close relatives of plant-associated Sordariomycetes is a case of convergent evolution, stressing the importance of this morphogenetic change in fungal pathogenesis.
Deserts, Swamps and Food Oases: Mapping around the Schools in Bahia, Brazil and Implications for Ensuring Food and Nutritional Security
Deserts, swamps and food oases terms have been used to characterize the food environment according to the identified food availability. Food swamps are defined as neighborhoods with a predominance of food establishments selling ultra-processed foods compared to establishments selling healthy options. In contrast, food oases are areas with easy access to healthy and nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and other fresh foods. Food deserts describe densely populated urban areas where residents face difficulty obtaining healthy food. In this context, this work aimed to map deserts, swamps, and food oases around federal schools in Bahia, Brazil, emphasizing the importance of implementing the Brazilian National School Feeding Program (PNAE) in these schools, to guarantee food security and nutrition. An ecological study was carried out in all 35 federal schools in Bahia, Brazil, using an 800 m buffer analysis, with the school as the centroid. The geographic coordinates of schools and food establishments were initially obtained using Google Maps and later confirmed onsite. To evaluate food deserts and swamps, the methodology proposed by the CDC was used and the Modified Retail Food Environment Index (mRFEI) was calculated; when the result was equal to zero, the surrounding area was considered a food desert and values between 0.01 and 20 determined food swamps; for values above 20, the neighborhood was classified as mixed. Food oases were considered regions containing at least one supermarket within the analyzed buffer. Descriptive analyses were carried out with frequency measurements, measures of central tendency (mean and median) and dispersion (standard deviation). The food environment of schools was compared considering the number of students impacted, the area where the school was located (urban or rural) and the size of the municipalities. The average number of food establishments found was 22.39 (±13.03), with the highest averages for snack bars (7.33 ± 4.43), grocery stores (5.83 ± 4.09) and restaurants (2.94 ± 2.19). Food deserts and mixed environments were identified in 40% of the sample, while swamps represented 20% and oases 65%. An association was observed between food deserts and social vulnerability, making it necessary to emphasize the importance of adequate implementation of the PNAE in these schools to reduce food and nutritional insecurity, guaranteeing the human right to adequate and healthy food and providing better nutrition and health perspectives within the school environment and impact on students’ lives through food and nutrition education actions, which are also part of the context of PNAE activities.
Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors in acute myocardial infarction: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) versus placebo, initiated within the hospitalization period, in addition to habitual treatment, for treating adult patients with confirmed acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We also conducted subgroup analysis by diabetes mellitus (DM) status and type of AMI. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The primary outcome was hospitalization for heart failure (HF). The secondary outcomes were all-cause death, cardiovascular death, and serious adverse events (AEs). We pooled risk ratios (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) for binary outcomes. The between-study variance was assessed using tau 2 statistics. We included five RCTs, encompassing 11,211 patients. SGLT2i significantly reduced the risk of hospitalization for HF compared to placebo (RR 0.73; 95% CI [0.61, 0.88]). However, the risk of all-cause death (RR 1.05; 95% CI [0.78, 1.41]) and cardiovascular death (RR 1.04; 95% CI [0.84, 1.29]) was similar between the groups, as well as the risk of serious AEs (RR 1.01; 95% CI [0.90, 1.14]). In the subgroup analysis by DM status and type of AMI, there were no significant subgroup differences for the outcomes of hospitalization for HF and all-cause death. In patients with AMI, treatment with SGLT2i is safe and significantly reduces the risk of hospitalization for HF, but it has no impact on all-cause death and cardiovascular death compared to placebo.
A Global Newton Method for the Nonsmooth Vector Fields on Riemannian Manifolds
This paper proposes and analyzes a globalized version of the Newton method for finding a singularity of the nonsmooth vector fields. Basically, the new method combines a version of nonsmooth Newton method with a nonmonotone line search strategy. The global convergence analysis of the proposed method as well as results on its rate are established under mild assumptions. Finally, numerical experiments illustrating the practical advantages of the proposed scheme are reported.
Curcumin in inflammatory bowel diseases: Cellular targets and molecular mechanisms
Curcumin, a natural product, has exhibited promising effects in both animal models and clinical trials, interacting with a multitude of factors linked to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). These factors encompass cytokines, oxidative stress-associated enzymes, and modulation of the intestinal microbiota. Notably, curcumin has demonstrated therapeutic potential in animal models of colitis, wherein it exerts a negative regulatory influence on pivotal signaling pathways such as PI3/Akt, JAK/STAT, and β-catenin. Moreover, it inhibits the expression of pro-inflammatory enzymes and co-stimulatory molecules (including RANKL, ICAM-1, CD205, CD256, TLR4, among others), while curbing immune cell chemotaxis, thereby attenuating the characteristic neutrophil infiltration observed in IBD. Another facet of curcumin’s action involves its modulation of the intestinal microbiota. Notably, the microbiota itself contributes to beneficial biotrans formations of curcumin, thereby enhancing its effectiveness in IBD treatment. On a clinical front, curcumin has demonstrated the ability to induce clinical and/or endoscopic remission without any reported toxic effects. Hence, curcumin warrants consideration as an adjunctive therapy in IBD management. Subsequent clinical investigations should concentrate on meticulously evaluating curcumin’s impact on these precise therapeutic targets.
Restoration and conservation of priority areas of caatinga’s semi‐arid forest remnants can support connectivity within an agricultural landscape
Land-use and land-cover (LULC) changes are major drivers of biodiversity loss in semi-arid regions, such as the Caatinga biome located in the Northeast of Brazil. We investigated landscape dynamics and fragmentation in an area of the São Francisco Valley in the Brazilian Caatinga biome and measured the effect of these dynamics on ecological, functional and structural connectivity over a 33-year period (1985–2018). We calculated landscape connectivity indices based on graph theory to quantify the effect of further agricultural expansion on ecological connectivity at the landscape scale. We used a multicriteria decision analysis that integrates graph-based connectivity indices at the habitat patch scale, combined with an index of human disturbance to identify patches that, if conserved and restored, preserve the connectivity of the landscape most effectively. In the period studied, agriculture increased at a rate of 2104 ha/year, while native Caatinga vegetation decreased at a rate of 5203 ha/year. Both dense and open Caatinga became more fragmented, with the number of fragments increasing by 85.2% and 28.6%, respectively, whilst the average fragment size decreased by 84.8% and 6.1% for dense and open Caatinga, respectively. If agriculture patches were to expand by a 300 m buffer around each patch, the overall ecological connectivity could be reduced by 6–15%, depending on the species’ (small- to mid-size terrestrial vertebrates) mobility characteristics for which the connectivity indices were calculated. We provided explicit spatial connectivity and fragmentation information for the conservation and restoration of the Caatinga vegetation in the studied area. This information helps with conservation planning in this rapidly changing ecosystem.
