In irrigated areas around the world, the recommendation for the use of subsurface drainage is also associated with controlling salinity problems. Due to the high implementation cost, the search for solutions that make this requirement more flexible is necessary. Among the options to be investigated is the hypothesis that the height and salinity of the water table in plots located at the highest points of a toposequence are lower and do not compromise plant development, even without underground drainage systems. In this context, the present work was developed to monitor and evaluate the variation in water level or mottling over twelve months, as well as to measure and analyze the electrical conductivity and average pH of the water table during this period and its possible impact on plants. For this purpose, three lots in toposequence were selected in the Senador Nilo Coelho Public Irrigation Project, Petrolina—PE, with previously defined characteristics: soil classification (Plinthic Yellow—Ultisol), crop planted (Mangifera indica L.) and irrigation system used (micro-sprinkler). Precipitation, reference evapotranspiration and volume of water applied via irrigation were monitored by an automatic weather station and hydrometers in each lot. In each plot, nine observation wells were installed, distributed in a grid, with the aim of make monthly measurements of the water table level or mottling. The electrical conductivity and pH of the groundwater were also measured to obtain the average monthly value for each lot. Illustrative 3D maps of the water table level in relation to the ground surface were created using the simple kriging method, in the UTM SIRGAS 2000 24S projection system. The absence and presence of groundwater in the upper and lower hillslope lots, respectively, were favored by the toposequence. The decision to install underground drainage or not can be made on a case-by-case basis; this must take into account, among other aspects, changes in physical characteristics along the soil profile, possible occurrence of mottling, the quality of water for irrigation, the irrigation management adopted and the position of the lot in the toposequence.

Cilantro Photosynthetic Parameters in Response to Different Flows of Nutrient Solutions Prepared with Brackish Waters Dominant in Na+, Cl−, or Ca2

Although the NFT (nutrient film technique) solution application rate for cilantro is known for fresh water, the application rate is still debatable when using brackish water. The application rate alone influences flow velocity dynamics, which, when associated with nutrient solution salinity, can impact plant development when saline water is used. Knowledge of how to best combine solution salinity and application rates will help decide if brackish water can be used to produce cilantro under hydroponic conditions. Thus, two trials were conducted in sequence from November 2019 to February 2020 under a protected environment. Cilantro cv. Verdão was submitted to four levels of electrical conductivity of nutrient solutions (ECns of 1.7, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 dS m−1) combined with four flow rates (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 L min−1). Because Na+ and Ca2+ are predominant ions in brackish waters in the crystalline and sedimentary regions in the Brazilian Semiarid region, the first study used brackish waters dominated by NaCl and the second study used waters dominated by CaCl2. We measured gas exchange and other photosynthetic parameters in plants cultivated with nutrient solutions high in Cl− and prevalent in Na+ or Ca2+, each combined with different application rates. We concluded that the increment in salinity decreased the gas exchange of cilantro plants, especially when the brackish waters were dominant in Ca2+ and Cl−. Up to an ECns of 4.5 dS m−1, plants maintained their leaf chlorophyll concentrations, although with reduced gas exchange. Salt stress compromised chlorophyll a fluorescence, affecting important parameters such as initial, maximum, and variable fluorescence. Besides the effects of salinity on chlorophyll a and b concentrations, the quantum and maximum yields of photosystem II remained stable, indicating that photosystem II may have adapted to the saline conditions applied in this study. The variation in application rates was unable to attenuate the deleterious effects of salinity, regardless of the ionic prevalence. We conclude that cilantro plants can be cultivated under hydroponic conditions, using currently accepted flow rates, with nutrient solutions of up to 3.0 dS m−1 without severe damage to plant photosynthetic parameters.

The impact of the salinity of the nutrient solution on water efficiency can be changed by the application flow. The aim of this work was to analyze the water efficiency and production components of coriander plants, cultivar Verdão, exposed to nutrient solutions (1.7, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 dS m−1) applied with different flow rates (1.0, 2.0, 3,0, and 4.0 L min−1) in an NFT hydroponic system. Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse with two sources of salts to prepare the electrical conductivity. In the first experiment, NaCl was used, and CaCl2·2H2O was used in the second. Variables were analyzed related to the production components and the consumption of water use efficiency. It was found that the water efficiency and production components of coriander plants were more affected by increases in electrical conductivity in the nutrient solution. CaCl2·2H2O better promotes the lower production of dry mass, plant height, water consumption, and the instantaneous and intrinsic efficiency of water use than NaCl. The coriander’s water relations were inhibited by increases in the concentration of salts in nutrient solution, while increases in the flow rate of the nutrient solution negatively affected the productive parameters of the coriander plants.

National Immunization Program Information System: implementation context assessment

Background
The National Immunization Program Information System (SIPNI -
Sistema de Informação do Programa Nacional de Imunização
) in Brazil is a technological innovation management tool that enhances the performance of managers and health professionals in the evaluation and monitoring of immunization activities. In the country, the decentralization of the System is at an advanced stage, but it still faces challenges regarding its operation and use, impacting on its results. This study aims to evaluate the deployment of SIPNI in the state of Minas Gerais, in 2017.
Method
Cross-section study performed in Primary Healthcare vaccination rooms in 54 municipalities in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, in 2017. A multidimensional questionnaire was used with nursing professionals who work in vaccination rooms, containing questions about the structure (presence of an internet-connected computer, instruction manual, software version, IT professional for technical support, trained healthcare professional, use of communication channels to obtain system information) and the process (activities performed by the staff to operate the immunization information system) of their work. Those questions refer to the components of the information system: system management, immunized-patient records, and Movement of Immunobiological. Implementation Degree (ID) was defined by a score system with different weights for each criterion, according to the importance level observed in it, with a rating of: adequate, partially adequate, inadequate and critically inadequate. For data analysis, median was used as the summary measure, and Pearson’s Chi-Squared Test was used for proportion comparison.
Results
Municipal SIPNI is not adequately implemented and that results mainly from the actions performed in health service units, indicating problems in the use of technology by professionals working in vaccination rooms. The structure was better evaluated than the process, presenting IDs of 70.9 and 59.5%, respectively. Insufficient internet access, inadequate use of communication channels, and lack of professional qualification were some of the identified structural issues. “Movement of Immunobiological” was the best-ranked component (ID = 68.5%), followed by “immunized patient records” (ID = 59.3%) and “SIPNI management” (ID = 50.7%). Partial performance of SIPNI is independent of population size in the municipality and of FSH coverage.
Conclusions
SIPNI is still an underutilized technological innovation. There are challenges that must be overcome, such as implementation of the final web version, internet connectivity, and capabilities aimed at the use of information generated by technology. Nevertheless, perspectives regarding SIPNI are positive, with functionalities to optimize activities in vaccination rooms.

Obesity is a pandemic disease characterized by lipid accumulation, increased proinflammatory cytokines, and reactive oxygen species. It is associated with the development of comorbidities that lead to death. Additionally, drug treatments developed to control obesity are insufficient and have a variety of adverse effects. Thus, the search for new anti-obesity therapies is necessary. Campomanesia adamantium is a species from the Brazilian Cerrado that has the potential to treat obesity, as described by the antihyperlipidemic activity of its roots. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the activity of the aqueous extract of C. adamantium leaves (AECa) on the control of reactive species in vitro, on lipid accumulation in adipocytes and Caenorhabditis elegans, and on the production of proinflammatory cytokines in adipocytes. The antioxidant capacity of AECa was observed by its action in scavenging DPPH• free radical, iron-reducing power, and inhibition of β-carotene bleaching. AECa reduced lipid accumulation in preadipocytes and in C. elegans. Moreover, AECa reduced the production of the proinflammatory cytokines MCP-1, TNF-α, and IL-6 in adipocytes. In summary, the antioxidant activity and the ability of AECa to reduce the accumulation of lipids and proinflammatory cytokines indicate, for the first time, the anti-obesity potential of C. adamantium leaves.

Quercetin Reduces Toxoplasma gondii Infection in In Vitro and Ex Vivo Placental Models

Congenital toxoplasmosis, caused by the obligatory intracellular apicomplexan protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, can lead to severe complications during pregnancy, including fetal malformations and spontaneous abortion. In the present study, the anti-T. gondii effects of the natural flavonoid quercetin were evaluated using in vitro, ex vivo, and in silico models. Cell viability and intracellular proliferation of the parasite were determined via colorimetric assays. The lipid droplet assay was analyzed using Nile Red staining, the antioxidant and oxidative stress parameters were determined by biochemical assays, and the cytokine levels were quantified by immunoassays. Our results demonstrated that non-cytotoxic concentrations of quercetin (CC50 > 100 μM) significantly inhibited parasite proliferation (IC50 = 14.10 ± 2.83 μM; SI > 7.09) in an irreversible manner. Quercetin impairs parasite adhesion, invasion, and reinfection capacity. In parallel, quercetin reduced lipid droplet accumulation, restored antioxidant balance by modulating redox biomarkers, and regulated cytokine production, notably increasing IL-4, IL-6, and IL-8 levels. Corroborating the in vitro findings, quercetin significantly reduced T. gondii proliferation in human placental villous explants while preserving tissue architecture and viability. In silico analyses revealed that quercetin binds to the active site of T. gondii hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (TgHGPRT) and exhibits favorable pharmacokinetic and drug-likeness properties.

Is the Performance of a Specialist Herbivore Affected by Female Choices and the Adaptability of the Offspring?

The performance of herbivorous insects is related to the locations of defenses and nutrients found in the different plant organs on which they feed. In this context, the females of herbivorous insect species select certain parts of the plant where their offspring can develop well. In addition, their offspring can adapt to plant defenses. A system where these ecological relationships can be studied occurs in the specialist herbivore, Tuta absoluta, on tomato plants. In our experiments we evaluated: (i) the performance of the herbivore T. absoluta in relation to the tomato plant parts on which their offspring had fed, (ii) the spatial distribution of the insect stages on the plant canopy and (iii) the larval resistance to starvation and their walking speed at different instar stages. We found that the T. absoluta females preferred to lay their eggs in the tomato plant parts where their offspring had greater chances of success. We verified that the T. absoluta females laid their eggs on both sides of the leaves to better exploit resources. We also observed that the older larvae (3rd and 4th instars) moved to the most nutritious parts of the plant, thus increasing their performance. The T. absoluta females and offspring (larvae) were capable of identifying plant sites where their chances of better performance were higher. Additionally, their offspring (larvae) spread across the plant to better exploit the available plant nutrients. These behavioral strategies of T. absoluta facilitate improvement in their performance after acquiring better resources, which help reduce their mortality by preventing the stimulation of plant defense compounds and the action of natural enemies.

Factors related to the adoption of the Brazilian National Immunization Program Information System

Background
One way to optimize the adoption and use of technological innovations is to understand how those involved perceive, assess and decide to use them. This study aims to analyze the attributes that influence the adoption and use of the Brazilian National Immunization Program Information System (NIPIS) from the perspective of vaccination room workers.
Methods
This is a mixed method research, and a quantitative cross-sectional analytical study, with concomitant triangulation of data, carried out in a region of Brazil by using the Diffusion of Innovation Theory. We used a questionnaire with 183 nursing professionals who work at vaccination rooms in 12 municipalities. To test the research model, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and SmartPLS 2.3.0 have been applied to estimate the model. The qualitative research had a descriptive-exploratory character, using interviews (
n
= 18) analyzed through thematic analysis.
Results
The model proposed showed a mean correlation between the perceived attributes in the adoption and use of NIPIS. The results of the multiple regression indicated that the attributes “relative advantage” and “image” have a significant effect at 5% level (T > 1.97), positively influence the adoption and use of NIPIS; the attribute “voluntary use” negatively influences the adoption and use of the system; the attributes “experimentation”, “compatibility”, “profitability”, and “ease of use” did not influence the adoption and use of NIPIS. Emphasis has been placed on aspects that weaken the adoption and use of NIPIS such as lack of good quality internet and resistance to use the technology by some professionals. Workers perceive the importance of NIPIS for the municipality and point out that technological innovation provides data at an individual level, inserted in real time, which makes it possible to assess vaccination coverage. Lack of an unstable internet compromises data release due to system slowness.
Conclusions
The mixed method allowed an in-depth analysis of the adoption and use of NIPIS in the Western Health Macroregion of Minas Gerais State, and similarities were observed in the results. The attribute “relative advantage” is the one that most influences the adoption and use of NIPIS, which is the strongest predictor of innovation adoption rate.

The intergenerational relationship between conditional cash transfers and newborn health

Background
Lack of nutrition, inadequate housing, low education and limited access to quality care can negatively affect children’s health over their lifetime. Implemented in 2003, the Bolsa Familia (“Family Stipend”) Program (PBF) is a conditional cash transfer program targeting poor households in Brazil. This study investigates the long-term benefits of cash transfers through intergenerational transmission of health and poverty by assessing the early life exposure of the mother to the PBF.
Methods
We used data from the 100M SINASC-SIM cohort compiled and managed by the Center for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health (CIDACS), containing information about participation in the PBF and socioeconomic and health indicators. We analyzed five measures of newborn health: low (less than 2,500 g) and very low (less than 1,500 g) birth weight, premature (less than 37 weeks of gestation) and very premature (less than 28 weeks of gestation) birth, and the presence of some type of malformation (according to ICD-10 codes). Furthermore, we measured the early life exposure to the PBF of the mother as PBF coverage in the previous decade in the city where the mother was born. We applied multilevel logistic regression models to assess the associations between birth outcomes and PBF exposures.
Results
Results showed that children born in a household where the mother received BF were less likely to have low birth weight (OR 0.93, CI; 0.92-0.94), very low birth weight (0.87, CI; 0.84-0.89), as well as to be born after 37 weeks of gestation (OR 0.98, CI; 0.97-0.99) or 28 weeks of gestation (OR 0.93, CI; 0.88-0.97). There were no significant associations between households where the mother received BF and congenital malformation.
On average, the higher the early life exposure to the PBF of the mother, the lower was the prevalence of low birth weight, very low birth weight and congenital malformation of the newborn. No trend was noted for preterm birth.
Conclusion
The PBF might have indirect intergenerational effects on children’s health. These results provide important implications for policymakers who have to decide how to effectively allocate resources to improve child health.
