Evaluation of preoperative gabapentin on cardiopulmonary parameters and postoperative pain in dogs undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of oral gabapentin for perioperative pain control in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy (OVH). Ten female dogs were randomly assigned into two groups, and standard OVH was performed following anaesthesia with propofol injection (4 mg/kg). The treatment group was premedicated with 20 mg/kg oral gabapentin 8 hours before anaesthesia induction, while control dogs were administered a placebo. Adverse events associated with gabapentin were noted as they occurred. Changes in physiological and cardiopulmonary parameters were determined at 10-minutes intervals until recovery from anaesthesia. Pain severity was assessed using GCMPS-SF pain scales upon recovery from anaesthesia (time = 0) and at 12-hours intervals over 48 hours by independent observers. Physiological parameters and GCMPS-SF scores were compared using ANOVA. Diarrhoea (1/5) and swollen salivary glands (1/5) were the only adverse events associated with gabapentin administration. The rectal temperature, heart rate and pulse rate were not significantly (p = 0.47) different between the two groups. The postoperative pain score as well as respiratory rate and mean arterial pressure were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in gabapentin group. Premedication with gabapentin is safe and decreased postoperative pain scores in dogs presented for elective neutering.
Severe Tick Infestation and Haemogregarina spp. Infection in a Captive African Rock Python (Python sebae): A Clinical and Parasitological Case from Nigeria
Ectoparasitic infestations in reptiles-primarily ticks and mites-can significantly compromise their health and fitness, particularly in captivity conditions. This brief report describes a severe tick infestation and concurrent Haemogregarina spp. infection in an African rock python (Python sebae) at a private zoo in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Initial clinical evaluation revealed heavy infestations of Amblyomma latum ticks, pronounced facial swelling, incomplete shedding, anorexia, lethargy, and the presence of intraerythrocytic Haemogregarina-like gamonts on stained blood smears. Haematological analysis further showed mild haemoconcentration and elevated leukocyte differentials suggestive of an inflammatory response, potentially caused by a parasitic infection. The treatment protocol consisted of mechanical removal of ticks, oral administration of Ivermectin, and improved husbandry practices to prevent ectoparasite re-infestation. Post-treatment, the python showed a notable clinical improvement, evidenced by resumed feeding and normal shedding within five days. Microscopic examination of blood smears post-treatment confirmed the absence of Haemogregarina-like gamonts, indicating the effectiveness of the therapeutic approach. Overall, the present case report highlights the importance of parasitic surveillance, rapid intervention, and adherence to rigorous husbandry standards to ensure the health and welfare of reptiles in captivity.
Evaluación de los efectos antiinflamatorios, antioxidantes y cicatrizantes del extracto metanólico de semillas de soja en un modelo de herida por escisión en rata albina
La cicatrización de heridas es un proceso fisiológico complejo influenciado por el estrés oxidativo y la inflamación. Este estudio evaluó los efectos antioxidantes, antiinflamatorios y cicatrizantes de un extracto metanólico de semillas de soya utilizando un modelo de herida por escisión de espesor completo en ratas albinas machos. Catorce ratas fueron divididas aleatoriamente en dos grupos (n = 7). Bajo anestesia, se indujeron heridas cutáneas de espesor completo de forma aséptica en la región toracoabdominal. El Grupo A recibió agua estéril tópica, mientras que el Grupo B fue tratado diariamente con el extracto de semillas de soya durante 21 días. La cicatrización fue evaluada mediante examen macroscópico, medición de la contracción de la herida y análisis de marcadores inflamatorios y de estrés oxidativo.
Assessment of the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing effects of methanolic soybean seed extract in an excision wound model in albino rats
Wound healing is a complex physiological process influenced by oxidative stress and inflammation. This study assessed the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing effects of a methanolic extract of soybean seeds using a full-thickness excision wound model in male albino rats. Fourteen rats were randomly divided into two groups (n = 7). Under anesthesia, full-thickness skin wounds were aseptically created in the thoraco-abdominal region. Group A received sterile water (placebo) topically, while Group B received the soybean seed extract daily for 21 days. Wound healing was evaluated by macroscopic examination, measurement of wound contraction, and analysis of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers.By day 7, wound contraction was significantly higher in the control group (60.42 ± 6.65%) compared to the extract-treated group (43.96 ± 11.58%) (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio between the two groups. However, biochemical analyses showed elevated levels of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the treated group (MDA: 4.26 ± 0.39 µmol/mg; SOD: 1.43 ± 0.16 mg/mL) versus the control (MDA: 3.18 ± 0.51 µmol/ mg; SOD: 1.01 ± 0.13 mg/mL) (p < 0.05).In conclusion, topical application of soybean seed methanolic extract did not enhance wound healing but improved antioxidant markers, indicating its potential role in mitigating oxidative stress rather than directly accelerating tissue repair. La cicatrización de heridas es un proceso fisiológico complejo influenciado por el estrés oxidativo y la inflamación. Este estudio evaluó los efectos antioxidantes, antiinflamatorios y cicatrizantes de un extracto metanólico de semillas de soya utilizando un modelo de herida por escisión de espesor completo en ratas albinas machos. El Grupo A recibió agua estéril tópica, mientras que el Grupo B fue tratado diariamente con el extracto de semillas de soya durante 21 días. La cicatrización fue evaluada mediante examen macroscópico, medición de la contracción de la herida y análisis de marcadores inflamatorios y de estrés oxidativo.Para el día 7, la contracción de la herida fue significativamente mayor en el grupo control (60.42 ± 6.65%) en comparación con el grupo tratado con el extracto (43.96 ± 11.58%) (p < 0.05). Sin embargo, los análisis bioquímicos mostraron niveles elevados de malondialdehído (MDA) en suero y actividad de superóxido dismutasa (SOD) en el grupo tratado (MDA: 4.26 ± 0.39 µmol/mg; SOD: 1.43 ± 0.16 mg/mL) frente al control (MDA: 3.18 ± 0.51 µmol/mg; SOD: 1.01 ± 0.13 mg/mL) (p < 0.05).En conclusión, la aplicación tópica del extracto metanólico de semillas de soya no mejoró la cicatrización de heridas, pero sí incrementó los marcadores antioxidantes, lo que sugiere un posible papel terapéutico en la mitigación del estrés oxidativo más que en la aceleración directa de la reparación tisular.
Profiles of plasma interleukin-6 and interleukin-10 in relation to some haematologic alterations following colo-peritoneo-cystoplasty in dogs
Systemic inflammatory response to surgical interventions has been characterized by an orchestrated interplay of endogenous mediatory cytokines and haematologic alterations. The study was carried out to determine the changes in plasma levels of pro-inflammatory interleukin-6 (IL-6) and anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 (IL-10) in relation to haematological alterations in response to colo-peritoneo-cystoplasty in dogs. Haematological and plasma concentrations of IL-6 and IL-10 were profiled in four apparently healthy dogs, following the colo-peritoneo-cystoplastic procedure. Mean packed cell volume (PCV) significantly ( P  < 0.05) decreased from the pre-surgical 45.84 ± 3.67 to a lowest value (33.50 ± 2.53%) on day 7 post-surgery. Mean total leukocyte count (TLC) significantly ( P  < 0.05) increased from the pre-surgical value (9.85 ± 1.02 × 10 9 /L) to a peak level (14.20 ± 2.77 × 10 9 /L) on day 7 post-surgery. Mean neutrophil count significantly ( P  < 0.05) increased from the pre-surgical value of 6.63 ± 0.79 to a peak day 7 post-surgical value (10.00 ± 2.39 × 10 9 /L. Mean lymphocyte count rose from 3.59 ± 0.31 to day 4 post-surgical value of 4.42 ± 0.82 × 10 9 /L. Changes in mean eosinophil and monocyte counts were not significant ( P  > 0.05). Mean plasma IL-6 concentration significantly ( P  < 0.05) increased from 7639.45 ± 146.81 (pre-surgical) to 7916.62 ± 32.97 pg/mL on day 4 post-surgery. The pre-surgical mean IL-10 concentration was 93.95 ± 17.18 pg/mL. It remained relatively unchanged post-surgery until on day 9 when it suddenly surged to 449.70 ± 125.79 pg/mL. The mean concentration of the IL-10 slightly decreased and fluctuates until day 35 when another peak rise (457.20 ± 95.78 pg/mL) was observed. It was observed that changes in plasma concentrations of IL-6 and IL-10 positively correlated with the leukocytic changes, which suggest presence of a regulatory interplay of IL-6, IL-10 and leukocytic changes in wound healing inflammatory response to the colo-peritoneo-cystoplasty in dogs.
