Protestantism and Politics in Korea
Following its introduction to Korea in the late nineteenth century, Protestantism grew rapidly both in numbers of followers and in influence, and remained a dominating social and political force throughout the twentieth century. InProtestantism and Politics in Korea, Chung-shin Park charts this stunning growth and examines the shifting political associations of Korean Protestantism. Elsewhere in Asia, evangelical Protestant missionaries failed to have much social and political impact, being perceived as little more than agents of Western imperialism. But in Korea the church became a locus of national resistance to Japanese colonization in the fifty years preceding 1945. Missionaries and local adherents steadily gained popular support as they became identified with progressive political reforms. After World War II and the division of the Korean peninsula, however, most Protestant institutions in South Korea were conscripted into the fight against communism. In addition, they became involved in the postwar push for rapid economic development. These alliances led to increasing political conservatism, so that mainstream Korean Protestantism eventually became a stalwart defender of the authoritarian status quo. A small liberal minority remained politically active, supporting social and human rights causes throughout the 1960s and 1970s, laying the foundation for mass protests and gradual democratic liberalization in the 1980s. Park documents the theological evolution of Korean Protestantism from early fundamentalism to more liberal doctrines and shows how this evolution was reflected in the political landscape.
ICU Liberation for critically ill children in Hong Kong
Intensive care unit Liberation bundle In the past decade, more patients have survived paediatric intensive care compared with previous decades.6 This has brought long-term morbidities among patients discharged from the PICU, collectively known as post[-]intensive care syndrome (PICS) in children.7 8 These long-term morbidities include functional deficits of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social health that affect the daily life, school performance, and social performance of these patients and their family.9 10 11 The PICS affects one-third of patients discharged from PICU and can persist for years.12 The well-intended and often aggressive treatment in the PICU is, in part, the origin of PICS in children. The PICU stay is a physically traumatic and emotionally stressful experience for children and their family, and these individuals may develop PICS, such as post-traumatic stress disorder13 or critical illness myopathy.14 Acute PICU care prioritise disease control with aggressive treatment over considerations for sleep, recovery, and rehabilitation; however, the patient may develop ventilator dependence,15 physical impairment,16 or delirium.17 18 The PICU at Hong Kong Children's Hospital commenced service on 27 March 2019. [...]interventions in our PICU have progressed towards improving physical, psychological, and social sequelae.
Foreign Direct Investments in Asia
This book covers nine countries of ASEAN and the East Asian area, including major Asian countries, and compares their respective policies to attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDI). Through comparative study of FDI promotion policies, this book will give policy makers in the area of FDI promotion an overview and comparison of the FDI policies of other countries. In addition, researchers at graduate, post-graduate or professional level will gain from the econometric methodology and detailed definitions of various spillover effects (horizontal and vertical), which will be beneficial to their research. In addition to FDI policy comparison, this book focuses on the various spillover effects of FDI. It separates it into categories: own productivity effects; intra-industry spillover effects; and inter-industry spillover effects (forward and backward linkage effects). While most other studies have only taken econometric tests on own-productivity and intra-industry spillovers, a key advantage to this book is that it also covers the separate effects of inter-industry linkages. Through policy comparison and econometric tests on various spillover effects on economic growth, employment and exports, this book will give policy makers and researchers an innovative and constructive guide to FDI.
