The influence of green SCM on SCM utilization in the shipbuilding and shipping industries: the mediating role of ESG management awareness

Purpose - This study explores how green supply chain management (GSCM) practices influence supply chain management (SCM) utilization in the shipbuilding and shipping industries, focusing on the mediating role of environmental, social and governance (ESG) management awareness. It aims to assess whether higher levels of ESG awareness enhance the effectiveness of GSCM in driving sustainable operational outcomes. Design/methodology/approach - A survey targeting professionals in the shipbuilding and shipping sectors was conducted, and the collected data were analyzed using Hayes' PROCESS Macro Model 4. The analytical process included normality checks, reliability assessment and correlation analysis to ensure methodological robustness and transparency. Findings - ESG awareness acts as a partial mediator, enhancing the impact of GSCM on SCM by facilitating resource efficiency, emission reductions and sustainable waste practices. These findings emphasize ESG awareness as a strategic lever for achieving both regulatory compliance and long-term competitiveness. Originality/value - This study provides a clear and industry-specific contribution by empirically analyzing the relationship between ESG management awareness, green supply chain management (GSCM) and supply chain management (SCM) utilization in the shipbuilding and shipping sectors. This research highlights how ESG awareness functions as a critical enabler of GSCM effectiveness in highly regulated, resource-intensive environments.

EUS-Guided Biliary Drainage Versus ERCP for the Primary Palliation of Malignant Biliary Obstruction: A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial

ObjectivesThe goal of the study was to determine whether endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD) is comparable to conventional transpapillary stenting with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in palliation of malignant distal biliary obstruction. Although ERCP for the palliation of malignant biliary obstruction is the standard of care, post-procedure pancreatitis and stent dysfunctions are not uncommon. While EUS-BD has garnered interest as a viable alternative when ERCP is impossible, its role as a primary palliation of malignant distal biliary obstruction is yet to be proven.MethodsWe performed random allocation to EUS-BD or ERCP in 125 patients with unresectable malignant distal biliary obstruction at four tertiary academic referral centers in South Korea.ResultsTechnical success rates were 93.8% (60/64) for EUS-BD and 90.2% (55/61) for ERCP (difference 3.6%, 95% 1-sided confidence interval lower limit −4.4%, P = 0.003 for noninferiority margin of 10%). Clinical success rates were 90.0% (54/60) in EUS-BD and 94.5% (52/55) in ERCP (P = 0.49). Lower rates of overall adverse events (6.3% vs 19.7%, P = 0.03) including post-procedure pancreatitis (0 vs 14.8%), reintervention (15.6% vs 42.6%), and higher rate of stent patency (85.1% vs 48.9%) were observed with EUS-BD. EUS-BD was also associated with more preserved quality of life (QOL) than transpapillary stenting after 12 weeks of the procedure.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated comparable technical and clinical success rates between EUS-BD and ERCP in relief of malignant distal biliary obstruction. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with transpapillary metal stenting is the standard palliation method for malignant distal biliary obstruction (MDBO); however, post-ERCP pancreatitis are not uncommon. Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD) with transmural metal stenting has emerged as an option for primary palliation of MDBO. We compared the efficacy and safety of these procedures as first-line MDBO treatment. We searched for relevant English-language articles in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. The outcomes of interest were technical success, clinical success, adverse events, stent patency, reintervention rates, and procedure time. Subgroup analysis was performed for patients without duodenal invasion (eg, endoscopically accessible papilla; EUS-choledochoduodenostomy [CDS] vs. ERCP). Ten studies (3 randomized trials and 7 retrospective studies) with 756 patients were included. The cumulative technical and clinical success rates were high for both procedures (EUS-BD: 94.8% [294/310] and 93.8% [286/305], ERCP: 96.5% [386/400] and 95.7% [377/394]). The cumulative adverse event rates were 16.3% (54/331) for EUS-BD and 18.3% (78/425) for ERCP. In subgroup analysis for patients without duodenal invasion, EUS-CDS showed similar cumulative technical and clinical success rate with ERCP (technical success rate, EUS-CDS vs. ERCP: 94.2% [146/155] vs. 97.8% [237/242]; clinical success rate, EUS-CDS vs. ERCP: 94.2% [145/154] vs. 93.0% [225/242]). The cumulative rate of adverse events for EUS-CDS and ERCP was also comparable (15.5% [24/155] for EUS-CDS and 18.6% [45/242] for ERCP). As first-line palliation of MDBO, EUS-BD was similar to ERCP in technical and clinical success and safety; however, larger randomized trials comparing EUS-CDS and ERCP in this setting with endoscopically accessible papilla may be required.

Trends in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components in South Korea: Findings from the Korean National Health Insurance Service Database (2009–2013)

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has markedly increased worldwide. However, studies in the United States show that it has remained stable or slightly declined in recent years. Whether this applies to other countries is presently unclear.
We examined the trends in the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components in Korea.
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components was estimated in adults aged >30 years from the Korean National Health Insurance Service data from 2009 to 2013. The revised National Cholesterol Education Program criteria were used to define metabolic syndrome.
Approximately 10 million individuals were analyzed annually. The age-adjusted prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased from 28.84% to 30.52%, and the increasing trend was more prominent in men. Prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL-cholesterol, and impaired fasting plasma glucose significantly increased. However, the prevalence of hypertension decreased in both genders. The prevalence of abdominal obesity decreased in women over 50 years-of-age but significantly increased in young women and men (<50 years).
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is still increasing in Korea. Trends in each component of metabolic syndrome are disparate according to the gender, or age groups. Notably, abdominal obesity among young adults increased significantly; thus, interventional strategies should be implemented particularly for this age group.

The role of APOE in cognitive trajectories and motor decline in Parkinson’s disease

We aimed to investigate the role of the
APOE
genotype in cognitive and motor trajectories in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Using PD registry data, we retrospectively investigated a total of 253 patients with PD who underwent the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE) two or more times at least 5 years apart, were aged over 40 years, and free of dementia at the time of enrollment. We performed group-based trajectory modeling to identify patterns of cognitive change using the MMSE. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis was used to investigate the role of the
APOE
genotype in cognitive and motor progression. Trajectory analysis divided patients into four groups: early fast decline, fast decline, gradual decline, and stable groups with annual MMSE scores decline of − 2.8, − 1.8, − 0.6, and − 0.1 points per year, respectively. The frequency of
APOE
ε4 was higher in patients in the early fast decline and fast decline groups (50.0%) than those in the stable group (20.1%) (
p
= 0.007).

ε4, in addition to older age at onset, depressive mood, and higher H&Y stage, was associated with the cognitive decline rate, but no

genotype was associated with motor progression.

Inconsistency in the use of the term “validation” in studies reporting the performance of deep learning algorithms in providing diagnosis from medical imaging

The development of deep learning (DL) algorithms is a three-step process-training, tuning, and testing. Studies are inconsistent in the use of the term \"validation\", with some using it to refer to tuning and others testing, which hinders accurate delivery of information and may inadvertently exaggerate the performance of DL algorithms. We investigated the extent of inconsistency in usage of the term \"validation\" in studies on the accuracy of DL algorithms in providing diagnosis from medical imaging.
We analyzed the full texts of research papers cited in two recent systematic reviews. The papers were categorized according to whether the term \"validation\" was used to refer to tuning alone, both tuning and testing, or testing alone. We analyzed whether paper characteristics (i.e., journal category, field of study, year of print publication, journal impact factor [JIF], and nature of test data) were associated with the usage of the terminology using multivariable logistic regression analysis with generalized estimating equations. Of 201 papers published in 125 journals, 118 (58.7%), 9 (4.5%), and 74 (36.8%) used the term to refer to tuning alone, both tuning and testing, and testing alone, respectively. A weak association was noted between higher JIF and using the term to refer to testing (i.e., testing alone or both tuning and testing) instead of tuning alone (vs. JIF <5; JIF 5 to 10: adjusted odds ratio 2.11, P = 0.042; JIF >10: adjusted odds ratio 2.41, P = 0.089). Journal category, field of study, year of print publication, and nature of test data were not significantly associated with the terminology usage.
Existing literature has a significant degree of inconsistency in using the term \"validation\" when referring to the steps in DL algorithm development. Efforts are needed to improve the accuracy and clarity in the terminology usage.

Real Foliage Plants as Visual Stimuli to Improve Concentration and Attention in Elementary Students

This study was conducted to determine the physiological and psychological benefits of foliage plants as visual stimuli. Twenty-three elementary students (aged 11 to 13 years old) participated in this study. In a crossover design, electroencephalography (EEG) was used to measure and determine the psycho-physiological effects of four different visual stimuli: an actual plant, artificial plant, photograph of a plant, and no plant. Subjective evaluations of emotions were assessed using the profile of mood state and semantic differential methods immediately after exposure to each visual stimulus. A significant decrease in theta waves of the frontal lobe was associated with presentation of the actual plants. This response indicated that the viewing of living plants prompted improvements in the attention and concentration of the elementary students. Furthermore, the presentation of the living plants was associated with more positive mood states, such as feelings of comfort and naturalness. In conclusion, actual plants may improve attention and prompt psychological relaxation in elementary students relative to artificial plants, photographs of plants, or the absence of plants.

Use of “Diagnostic Yield” in Imaging Research Reports: Results from Articles Published in Two General Radiology Journals

\"Diagnostic yield,\" also referred to as the detection rate, is a parameter positioned between diagnostic accuracy and diagnosis-related patient outcomes in research studies that assess diagnostic tests. Unfamiliarity with the term may lead to incorrect usage and delivery of information. Herein, we evaluate the level of proper use of the term \"diagnostic yield\" and its related parameters in articles published in

Potentially relevant articles published since 2012 in these journals were identified using MEDLINE and PubMed Central databases. The initial search yielded 239 articles. We evaluated whether the correct definition and study setting of \"diagnostic yield\" or \"detection rate\" were used and whether the articles also reported companion parameters for false-positive results. We calculated the proportion of articles that correctly used these parameters and evaluated whether the proportion increased with time (2012-2016 vs. 2017-2022).
Among 39 eligible articles (19 from

), 17 (43.6%; 11 from

Garden-Based Integrated Intervention for Improving Children’s Eating Behavior for Vegetables

This study was conducted to develop and verify the effects of a garden-based integrated intervention for improving children’s eating behavior for vegetables. A pre-post-test experimental design was employed. The participants were 202 elementary school students (average age: 11.6 ± 1.5 years). The garden-based integrated intervention program was conducted during regular school hours for a total of 12 weeks. The program, based on a mediator model for improving children’s eating behavior, included gardening, nutritional education, and cooking activities utilizing harvests. In order to examine effects of the program, the mediating factors related to children’s eating behavior were evaluated using pre-post questionnaires. As a result of the program, dietary self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, gardening knowledge, nutrition knowledge, vegetable preference, and vegetable consumption were significantly increased, and food neophobia was significantly decreased. In addition, there were positive correlations between most mediating factors. Thus, the garden-based integrated intervention developed in this study was effective in improving children’s eating behavior for vegetables.

Connectivity map-based drug repositioning of bortezomib to reverse the metastatic effect of GALNT14 in lung cancer

Despite the continual discovery of promising new cancer targets, drug discovery is often hampered by the poor druggability of these targets. As such, repurposing FDA-approved drugs based on cancer signatures is a useful alternative to cancer precision medicine. Here, we adopted an in silico approach based on large-scale gene expression signatures to identify drug candidates for lung cancer metastasis. Our clinicogenomic analysis identified GALNT14 as a putative driver of lung cancer metastasis, leading to poor survival. To overcome the poor druggability of GALNT14 in the control of metastasis, we utilized the Connectivity Map and identified bortezomib (BTZ) as a potent metastatic inhibitor, bypassing the direct inhibition of the enzymatic activity of GALNT14. The antimetastatic effect of BTZ was verified both in vitro and in vivo. Notably, both BTZ treatment and GALNT14 knockdown attenuated TGFβ-mediated gene expression and suppressed TGFβ-dependent metastatic genes. These results demonstrate that our in silico approach is a viable strategy for the use of undruggable targets in cancer therapies and for revealing the underlying mechanisms of these targets.
