Future challenges of cities in Asia
Since 1978 China's urbanization has risen from 18 to 45 per cent, over 350 million farmers have moved to cities or transformed their villages into towns, and the number of cities rose from under 200 to more than 650. These numbers are unprecedented in the course of human history and underscore the need for our attempt to understand what is going on in China as it rapidly urbanizes. This book examines China's urban environment to try and understand what is going on, and suggests improvements for planning the future while simultaneously preserving the past. The research in this book was conducted as part of the Urban Knowledge Network Asia (UKNA), an international research staff exchange scheme funded by the European Union's Marie Curie Actions and a continuation of the series of UKNA publications that includes Ideas of the City in Asian Settings, Cities in Asia by and for the People, and Future Challenges of Cities in Asia.
The importance of public support in the implementation of green transportation in smart cities using smart vehicle bicycle communication transport
Purpose Smart mobility is a major guideline in the development of Smart Cities’ transport systems and management. The issue of transition into green, secure and sustainable transport modes, such as using bicycles, should be implemented in this case, along with the subjectivism of management. Design/methodology/approach The proposed technology reflects the Smart Bicycle vehicle model, which tracks cyclists and weather conditions and turns to electric motors in critical circumstances. Findings This reduces the physical load and battery consumption of cyclists which affects the Smart Cities’ ecology positively. Originality/value In Smart Vehicle Bicycle Communication Transport, the vehicle movement optimization technique is used for traffic scenarios to analyze traffic signaling systems that give better results in variable and dense traffic conditions.
brain-specific cytochrome P450 responsible for the majority of deltamethrin resistance in the QTC279 strain of Tribolium castaneum
Cytochrome P450-mediated detoxification is one of the most important mechanisms involved in insecticide resistance. However, the molecular basis of this mechanism and the physiological functions of P450s associated with insecticide resistance remain largely unknown. Here, we exploited the functional genomics and reverse genetic approaches to identify and characterize a P450 gene responsible for the majority of deltamethrin resistance observed in the QTC279 strain of Tribolium castaneum. We used recently completed whole-genome sequence of T. castaneum to prepare custom microarrays and identified a P450 gene, CYP6BQ9, which showed more than a 200-fold higher expression in the deltamethrin-resistant QTC279 strain when compared with its expression in the deltamethrin-susceptible Lab-S strain. Functional studies using both double-strand RNA (dsRNA)-mediated knockdown in the expression of CYP6BQ9 and transgenic expression of CYP6BQ9 in Drosophila melanogaster showed that CYP6BQ9 confers deltamethrin resistance. Furthermore, CYP6BQ9 enzyme expressed in baculovirus metabolizes deltamethrin to 4-hydroxy deltamethrin. Strikingly, we also found that unlike many P450 genes involved in insecticide resistance that were reported previously, CYP6BQ9 is predominantly expressed in the brain, a part of the central nervous system (CNS) containing voltage-gated sodium channels targeted by deltamethrin. Taken together, the current studies on the brain-specific insect P450 involved in deltamethrin resistance shed new light on the understanding of the molecular basis and evolution of insecticide resistance.
Low Cost Implementation of Authenticated Encryption Using Spongift
The security of information being transmitted through wireless communication is of vital importance. Authenticated encryption aims to provide security through the confidentiality, integrity, and authentication of data transmitted. Wireless sensor nodes have their own operational constraints, which makes the security algorithm light in terms of area and low power consumption. In this work, a novel architecture of authenticated encryption is proposed that combines the lightweight symmetric block cipher GIFT for encryption and the SPONGE function for authentication. Iterative architectures of GIFT-64 and GIFT-128 are proposed and implemented with minimum resources and better throughput on various FPGA devices. Moreover, two hash functions, namely Spongift-56 and Spongift-112, are also proposed and implemented with minimum resources. A perfect combination of the proposed iterative GIFT architecture and the Spongift function is a better choice for authenticated encryption to be deployed in resource-constrained environments like wireless sensor nodes.
Are SDGs a myth?
This book discusses the continued emphasis on development gains in India's national policies and its quest to meet sustainable development goals. It offers an analysis of the laws and infrastructure for environmental protection in the country and their ineffectiveness in dealing with water pollution which has had dire consequences on India's ecological landscape. The book, while highlighting the need and importance of industrial development, argues for sustainable measures to moderate and monitor such developmental efforts in light of severe environmental degradations. Focusing on the state of Gujarat, it looks at published and un-published data on industrial development and water pollution levels and data obtained via applications filed under the Right to Information Act. It also offers a detailed account of the concentration of red industries which release the most hazardous pollutants and their effects on the environment. The authors look at the data from a theoretical and empirical perspective, offering insights into how the checks and balances levied by the state have been violated. They highlight the patterns and trends which emerge from the study of these developmental efforts and underline the need to improve the effectiveness of policy instruments, and the need to diversify the existing mechanisms. The book will be of great interest to students and researchers of environment and development studies, public policy, sociology, law and governance, human ecology and economics.
Effects of ankle joint mobilization with strength training versus conventional exercises on pain and physical function among patients with knee osteoarthritis
Background The development of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is largely influenced by poor biomechanics in the knee and surrounding joints. Effective interventions such as ankle joint mobilization and strength training exercises have demonstrated the potential to reduce pain and improve physical function among KOA patients. This study aimed to determine the combined effects of ankle joint mobilization and strength training on pain and physical function in patients with KOA. Method The study was conducted at the outpatient Department of Physiotherapy, MAHER, and included 45 patients with KOA who were enrolled based on clinical and radiographic criteria. Patients were assigned to three groups using a convenient sampling method: group A ( n  = 15) received ankle joint mobilization combined with strength training, group B ( n  = 15) received conventional knee exercises, and group C ( n  = 15) served as the control group. Outcomes, including pain and physical function, were measured using the WOMAC and VAS scores. Data were analyzed using both intention-to-treat and per-protocol methods, comparing baseline and post-treatment measures after 8 weeks. Results Significant reductions in pain and improvements in physical function were observed among KOA patients after 8 weeks of treatment. The F values were higher (11.51 for VAS and 572.45 for WOMAC) post-treatment, with P  < 0.05, indicating significant improvements compared to pre-treatment scores. Conclusion An 8-week program of ankle joint mobilization combined with strength training exercises significantly reduced knee pain and improved physical function in individuals with knee osteoarthritis, compared to conventional care.
Fiscal incentives and industrialisation: the case of Kachchh, Gujarat
Kachchh had suffered a major earthquake in 2001, resulting in extensive destruction of the area and a large number of fatalities. The economic activities had come to a standstill. In order to regenerate the economic activities and employment in the district, industrial development was promoted by offering fiscal incentives. The central government had extended a waiver of excise, and central sales tax and the State Government offered other significant fiscal benefits like waiving of state sales tax and extending capital investment subsidy. This paper describes the growth of the industry in the region during the incentive period. It explores if the location-based fiscal incentives have led to attracting investments to the region on a sustained fashion. The consequences of this development on the local livelihoods, employment and environment have also been studied. We have relied on personal interviews with various stakeholders, unpublished data from the industries department and other published data and literature for the analysis.
Lightweight implementation of AES for resource constrained environment
In order to enhance the data confidentiality and integrity in resource-constrained environments, an optimized hardware implementation of the Advanced Encryption Standard is proposed. An iterative architecture common for both AES-128 encryption and decryption, involving minimum hardware resources, is developed. The sub bytes and inverse sub bytes operations are realized using composite field arithmetic S-box and its inverse, respectively. The matrix constants of the inverse mixcolumns operation of decryption are expressed involving matrix constants of the mixcolumns operation of encryption. Hence, a common equation for both encryption and decryption is derived. Depending upon the requirement, encryption or decryption will be implemented with the minimum resources with appropriate control signals. The proposed work is implemented in both FPGA devices and ASIC platforms. The area occupied by the proposed architecture is 205 slices in the Virtex-5 FPGA device. The area estimate of the proposed design using 180nm technology SCL libraries is only 5644 GE, which highlights the design as a compact implementation of the AES-128 cipher and an optimal choice to ensure the safety of IoT devices.
Performance evaluation of a hybrid treatment system for the treatment of grey water
The performance of a combined up-flow submerged aerated biological filter (SABF) and photocatalytic process (PC) for the treatment of grey water was studied. The removal of COD, hardness, alkalinity, and turbidity was considered. The removal efficiency of SABF using organic and inorganic packing materials was evaluated. The combined SABF and PC removed 100% of COD, up to an organic loading rate (OLR) of 0.21 ± 0.05 kg/m3/day at 12 h HRT, irrespective of the packing media. The fibrous outer shell of coconut fibres favoured turbidity removal, but both the organic and inorganic packing materials showed equal performance in the removal of physicochemical parameters of the grey water.
