Ebony G. Patterson : ...while the dew is still on the roses...
\"In her celebrated drawings, tapestries, and sculptures, Ebony G. Patterson incorporates glitter, appliquâes, pins, embellishments, fabric, tassels, brooches, pearls and beads to tell haunting stories of violence, masculinity, and black youth culture. Bringing together highlights from the artist's work from the past five years, this book features exquisite reproductions that illuminate the works' vibrantly intricate detail. The book reveals the artist's poetic depictions of gardens as environments of beautiful sorrow. Two accompanying essays offer an examination of Patterson's work and a discussion of gardens as a theme in art and literature over the centuries\"--Amazon.com.
The Guatemalan Military And the Escuela Politecnca
The virtual monopoly of Guatemala's national military academy, the Escuela Politέcnica, in preparing officers, and the central position of the officer corps in that nation's power structure make the school a consequential elite-forming institution in Guatemalan society. Founded in 1873, the Politέcnica early evolved under Spanish influence and later (1931-45) was shaped along lines of West Point by U.S. officers. Admission by examination democratizes access to the school. The program, in which attrition is high, is designed to produce graduates who identify the army with the nation, possess intense loyalty to both, and are competent managers of violence. In many ways, the brotherhood of Politέcnica graduates is the most powerful elite in the country, its power unimpaired by the election of a civilian president in 1985.
Adult Role in Adolescent Subculture Innovation: A Case Study
A study to investigate the role of adults in developing adolescent soc responsibility. The propositions of the kind of adult role which is required for developing socially responsible adolescent groups were: 'that emergence of an adolescent subculture characterized by self-directing community participation is not likely to occur without specific adult leadership which: (a) gives supportive guidance..., (b) is positive & symbolic..., & (c) practices appropriate process manipulation (is sensitive & effective in both intervention & withdrawal tactics designed to maximize group self-direction & community participation).' An actual group which was created b see if an adolescent group could develop self-direction & community participation is described. The discussion is aimed at illustrating the above proposition rather than in testing it. A. S. Lackey.
Optimization of a PS2.M-based catalytic beacon in preparation for use as a device to explore mRNA secondary structures
The DNA oligonucleotide PS2.M has been previously reported to have nanomolar affinity for hemin. The PS2.M-hemin complex then exhibits peroxidase activity. It was predicted that this sequence could be used in a catalytic beacon to facilitate the development of a laboratory tool that would be effective at determining potential siRNA target sites. The PS2.M-based beacon used for this study forms a stem-loop structure that opens upon hybridization with a single-stranded target sequence. Once open, the PS2.M part of the beacon can fold, locking hemin within a three level planer arrangement. Once hemin is in place, the structure is catalytically active and can catalyze the oxidization of the chromogenic substrate 2,2,’-azino-bis (3-ethylebenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Thus, binding of the beacon can be monitored with absorbance readings at 414 nm. Although molecular beacons with a stem-loop structure could potentially be used for this type of test, the cost would be prohibitively expensive for most labs. Molecular beacons cost over $300 a piece, and many of them would be needed to conduct an exploration for a suitable siRNA target site within an mRNA. In contrast, a PS2.M-based beacon would only cost approximately $12. In general, development and optimization of a PS2.M-based catalytic beacon could provide a more economical and improved means of establishing siRNA target site accessibility within an mRNA. It was concluded that K+ and Mg+ are required for folding of the PS2.M beacon. The substrate ABTS offered the highest absorbance values at a concentration of 3.2 mM. Also, H2O2 concentrations of 3.6 mM and an extension of the beacon stem by 10 nucleotides will result in reduced non-specific background absorbance activity.

Is Society the Patient? Research and Action Implications
A report on the res problems of the Youth Community Participation Project (YCPP). In its attempt to change adolescent roles in society the Project found it necessary to 'treat society as the patient'. One of the hypo's of the YCPP was that adolescents will not take on roles of self-directing soc responsibility unless there is adult leadership which gives guidance, encourages identification with positive values, & is skilled in intervention & withdrawal tactics. On the res side this has implications for exp'al res on the relationships between adults & adolescents. On the action side it implies a need for selection & training of adult leaders. Other postulates of the YCPP are presented. These postulates affirm the idea that adolescent roles are a function of the psycho-cultural system of which they are a part. Methodologically the YCPP was defined as 'a tentative exploration rather than an experimental or quantified res.' Res considerations gave way to the needs of the groups being studied. This approach had effects on the res design, observation, & analysis of the data. As a result of the YCPP a signif res area has been delimited in the impact of the Sch on the development of self-direction & soc responsibility. The importance of this area in the face of pop increase & anti-soc adolescent behavior is discussed. Areas to be covered in a 4-yr res program are outlined. A. S. Lackey.
Social Science and the New Curriculum
Social science is badly needed by our society and yet miserably dealt with in the secondary school curriculum. This behavioral scievce desert is only now seeing a few experimental plants. Great resources ,and dedicated efforts of scholars are required, reports Dr. Patterson, who is Lincoln Filene Pofessor of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Tufts University and Director of the Lincoln Filene Center.
