Amid the yachts and penthouses, Dame Shirley finds her millions in jeopardy
The first breakthrough came one week after Westminster won a key court order in February that insisted [Dame Shirley] disclose her riches. It was on 18 February, that a fax from Israel stuttered through to the council's city hall declaring for the first time that she had given up defending the case and intended to ignore the court order. Those gagging orders were lifted in recent weeks to allow Westminster councillors today to approve new moves to serve writs on Dame Shirley in Israel. The writs, which have to comply with Guernsey and Israeli law, will be served in the next few weeks. January 1994: Mr [John Magill]'s early findings show Dame Shirley and others engaged in unlawful activity. Dame Shirley moves to Israel.

Routed Taliban `collapsing like dominos' ; Northern Alliance claims string of victories but Bush orders it to keep out of Kabul
It was reported that a planned Northern Alliance offensive on Kabul had been \"postponed\" after US President George Bush warned the Alliance to hold back from the capital until a provisional government could be formed. But Mr [Abdullah Abdullah] refused to rule out a march on Kabul in the coming days. North of Kabul, alliance commanders appeared to be chafing at the bit as they heard of the successes to their west. But the US fears its strategy could unravel if they were to capture Kabul, where they are unpopular. It is thought the Pashtuns of the south will not stomach the minority- dominated alliance in the capital. Mr [Geoff Hoon] told a newspaper that he would be \"quite happy to see the Northern Alliance steam across northern Afghanistan and take Kabul\" but after the Americans made their views clear, he amended his comments. \"We want them [the alliance] to march towards Kabul, to take ground, to deny the Taliban regime and Osama bin Laden space in Afghanistan,\" he told BBC's Breakfast with Frost. Downing Street also said that it merely wanted the alliance to \"march towards\" Kabul but not yet enter the city.

Christian Theologies of the Sacraments
Delves into the ancient debate regarding the nature and purpose of the seven sacramentsWhat are the sacraments? For centuries, this question has elicited a lively discussion and among theologians, and a variety of answers that do anything but outline a unified belief concerning these fundamental ritual structures. In this extremely cohesive and well-crafted volume, a group of renowned scholars map the theologies of sacraments offered by key Christian figures from the Early Church through the twenty-first century. Together, they provide a guide to the variety of views about sacraments found throughout Christianity, showcasing the variety of approaches to understanding the sacraments across the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox faith traditions.Chapters explore the theologies of thinkers from Basil to Aquinas, Martin Luther to Gustavo Gutiérrez. Rather than attempting to distill their voices into a single view, the book addresses many of the questions that theologians have tackled over the two thousand year history of Christianity. In doing so, it paves the way for developing theologies of sacraments for present and future contexts. The text places each theology of the sacraments into its proper sociohistorical context, illuminating how the church has used the sacraments to define itself and its congregations over time. The definitive resource on theologies of the sacraments, this volume is a must-read for students, theologians, and spiritually interested readers alike.
The Evening of Life
Although philosophy, religion, and civic cultures used to help people prepare for aging and dying well, this is no longer the case. Today, aging is frequently seen as a problem to be solved and death as a harsh reality to be masked. In part, our cultural confusion is rooted in an inadequate conception of the human person, which is based on a notion of absolute individual autonomy that cannot but fail in the face of the dependency that comes with aging and decline at the end of life. To help correct the ethical impoverishment at the root of our contemporary social confusion, The Evening of Life provides an interdisciplinary examination of the challenges of aging and dying well. It calls for a re-envisioning of cultural concepts, practices, and virtues that embraces decline, dependency, and finitude rather than stigmatizes them. Bringing together the work of sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, theologians, and medical practitioners, this collection of essays develops an interrelated set of conceptual tools to discuss the current challenges posed to aging and dying well, such as flourishing, temporality, narrative, and friendship. Above all, it proposes a positive understanding of thriving in old age that is rooted in our shared vulnerability as human beings. It also suggests how some of these tools and concepts can be deployed to create a medical system that better responds to our contemporary needs. The Evening of Life will interest bioethicists, medical practitioners, clinicians, and others involved in the care of the aging and dying. Contributors: Joseph E. Davis, Sharon R.
