Strain-driven corrugation in hBN-GaS, -GaSe, and -InS heterostructures
Two dimensional group IIIa monochalcogenides are promising two-dimensional semiconductors, known for their high carrier mobility and strong optical absorption in the visible and UV range. When integrated with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in van der Waals heterostructures, these materials benefit from the atomically flat and inert nature of hBN, which helps preserve their intrinsic electronic quality and enhances overall device performance. In our previous studies, hBN-based heterostructures with these monolayers exhibited favorable band alignment and optoelectronic characteristics. In this work, we investigate the role of strain in shaping the structural and electronic behavior of hBN/GaS, hBN/GaSe, and hBN/InS heterostructures using first-principles DFT calculations. Contrary to heterostructures previously reported in the literature, these three systems develop a pronounced corrugated geometry as a result of compressive strain and lattice mismatch. We analyze how this strain-induced out-of-plane distortion modifies interlayer coupling, charge redistribution, band structure, and optical absorption spectra.
COVID-19, mobility and self-isolation. Experiences of the Serbia’s citizens in the times of global pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus and closing the state borders across the world led to the mass return of the citizens of Serbia immediately before and after the declaration of the state of emergency in March 2020. The measure of placing under health supervision and the obligation of self-isolation, were the key means of mobility management in the situation of the health crisis in Serbia. How were the given measures implemented? How did they affect the citizens who returned to the country? What resources did they have at their disposal and in what way did they meet their basic needs during self-isolation? How was their experience of self-isolation shaped by public media perceptions of diaspora by representatives of the authorities and by their own social environment during the state of emergency? The aim of this paper is to answer these questions relying on the results of the online survey of 305 returnees, conducted during April and May 2020 by the researchers from the Institute for Sociological Research of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.
Strain-induced modulation of electronic and optical properties in hBN/InSe heterostructure
Our study delves into the nuanced effects of strain on hBN/InSe heterostructures, known for their exceptional wide-spectrum absorption capabilities. Employing uniform biaxial strain in the range of −6% to 6%, our investigation reveals a powerful method for manipulating the band gap. Notably, intense tensile strain leads to the near-complete elimination of the band gap—an outcome with profound implications. Comparison with hBN/InTe and hBN/GaTe heterostructures underscores the unique behaviour of hBN/InSe, showing a striking resemblance to hBN/GaTe but achieving lower band gap values under tensile strain. These findings provide crucial insights for experimental work and serve as a guide for more intricate theoretical explorations. With its outstanding electronic properties, tunable band gap, and remarkable absorption characteristics, hBN/InSe emerges as a key player in the development of future novel devices.
Phonon frequency comb close to an isolated Einstein mode in \\hbox InSiTe
The emergence of phonon frequency combs exemplifies a rare and intriguing phenomenon in quantum solids. Materials with distinctive phonon band structures are especially promising for hosting such states, as their vibrational dispersion landscape across the Brillouin zone can facilitate the formation of long-lived, collective lattice excitations. In the layered Van der Waals compound \\textrm{InSi}{\\textrm{Te}{₃}{}}{} , polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy reveals a pronounced anharmonicity in symmetry-predicted modes and the formation of a self-organized frequency domain structure (coherent-like state), in the range of a localized high-energy A_(1g) phonon mode near 500 cm−1. This strong phonon-phonon coupling manifests itself as an anomalous temperature dependence around 200 K, coinciding with the appearance of higher-order excitations within the phonon density of states gap. These findings position \\textrm{InSi}{\\textrm{Te}{₃}{}}{} as an unconventional platform where intrinsic highly structured phonon spectral correlations and unusually strong anharmonic effects coexist, opening new avenues for exploring emergent vibrational phenomena in low-dimensional materials.
Europeanisation from below at the semi-periphery: The movement against small hydropower plants in Serbia
This paper focuses on Let?s Defend the Rivers of Stara Planina, a local environmental initiative that has managed to scale up and transnationalise (Europeanise) from below and to generate sufficient pressure on national power-holders to amend existing legislation and halt further construction of small hydropower plants in protected natural areas. Linking the concepts of environmentalism of the poor/dispossessed and the transnationalisation (Europeanisation) of environmental protests through the example of Serbian protests against small hydropower plants, we explore how a local movement grew out of a tradition of non-politicised everyday environmentalism, transformed into a rebellion of the dispossessed and then tried to organise at both national and transnational level, using assistance from EU institutions and international environmental organisations to leverage national authorities and developers, while at the same time remaining critical of certain EU environmental policies and practices. This study is based on discursive analysis of the content posted to the official Facebook group and website of Let?s Defend the Rivers of Stara Planina.
Changes in Value Orientations Among the Economic Elite During the Postsocialist Transformation. Economic and Political Liberalism in Serbia
The primary purpose of this paper is to examine the dynamics of change in the value orientations of political and economic liberalism shown by members of the economic elite in Serbia during the period of postsocialist transformation. The paper’s second objective is to identify specific factors determining the potential lines of differentiation in degrees of attachment that members of the elite groups held to these values when the neoliberal form of capitalist regulation moved into crisis. The theoretical-hypothetical framework of the analysis given here draws on the theory of value-normative dissonance, while the methodological approach relies on a comparison of empirical data obtained at three points in time—before the breakdown of the socialist system (1989); during the period of entrenchment of capitalist relations (2003) and at the time when neo-liberal capitalist regulation went into crisis at both global and local levels (2012).
Political disaffection and disengagement in Serbia
The aim of this paper is to examine the extent of political disaffection and disengagement of Serbian citizens from a comparative European perspective, as well as to explore the relationships between two phenomena and determine the effects of several potential predictors (structural inequalities, gender, generational differences, urban environment, political awareness and competences, national and European identification, and political discontent) on different aspects of political disaffection and disengagement. In order to do so, we have used European Social Survey data (9th round, 2018), and singled out four different subdimensions of political disaffection and disengagement: assessment of responsiveness of the political system (external political efficacy), institutional trust, assessment of individual interest in politics and capabilities to engage in political processes (internal political efficacy), and the level of actual political engagement (political participation). The aim of the paper is to shed light on different systemic, structural and conjunctural factors that may contribute to shaping political attitudes and patterns of actions in contemporary Serbia and pose several theoretical and research questions that need further investigation.
Gender perspective in migration studies
Research field of migration has been developing for a long time parallel to and outside mainstream institutional academic sociology and its theoretical foundation. In the last two decades, within the field of migration studies, one specific aspect of the phenomena came to the research focus: gender, as significant factor that influences on motivation for migration, shaping, at the same time, its characteristics and specific experiences. With decisive breakthrough of qualitative methods in social sciences and humanities, as well as with gradual development of postmodern philosophy and feminist theory, gender migration studies have been established as research sub-discipline, with its own theoretical and categorical scientific apparatus (as well as institutional-academic grounding), managing more or less successfully to explain and understand multidimensional character of migration processes. This text represents an attempt to make relatively concise overview of disciplines? historical, theoretical and research field development, as a first step in its broader affirmation within Serbian institutional sociology.
Making a New Consensual Elite in Serbia
The text firstly addresses the thesis that systemic transformation – from a socialist to a capitalist order – changes both the preconditions on the basis of which political elite is constituted, and its main characteristics. Considering the specific course of transformation in Serbia, this indicates the difficulties for the transformation of its divided political elite – characterizing the aftermath of the breakdown of socialism – into a consensual elite that represents a type prevailing in liberal-democratic systems. The political elite in Serbia may thus be defined as primarily fragmented, with initial elements of consensuality. The main thesis is examined through an analysis of the changes in the character of political elites at two different levels: subjective, regarding their attitudes towards the EU based on 2007 and 2009 IntUne data; and objective (patterns of recruitment of their members based on 1989, 2003 and 2015 data on intra – and intergenerational mobility). The main findings reveal the gradual (although not yet completed) consolidation of political elites regarding their attitudes towards the EU, but also changing patterns of elite members’ recruitment based on political competition and the increasing self-reproduction of the ruling elites, indicating the formation of biased pluralism.
