Comprehensive Review of Perilla frutescens: Chemical Composition, Pharmacological Mechanisms, and Industrial Applications in Food and Health Products
Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., a multifunctional herbaceous plant, is widely used in traditional medicine and cuisine due to its rich array of bioactive compounds. To date, many key phytochemicals in P. frutescens have been identified, including volatile terpenoids (perillaldehyde, limonene,), flavonoids (luteolin, apigenin), and phenolic acids (rosmarinic acid derivatives), which exhibit significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anticancer, antibacterial, and blood sugar-lowering effects. Studies have shown that volatile oils, flavonoids, and phenolic acids in P. frutescens exert their effects in various experimental models. In food and industrial applications, P. frutescens shows innovative potential in functional foods, natural preservatives, and novel food additives, effectively extending food shelf life and providing antimicrobial protection. Moreover, research on the biology and genetic improvement of P. frutescens has provided new approaches to enhance its yield and bioactive content. Finally, this paper also discusses the safety and standardization issues of the plant, providing theoretical support for its widespread application.

Photocatalytic Enantioselective Radical Cascade Multicomponent Minisci Reaction of β‐Carbolines Using Diazo Compounds as Radical Precursors
Here, a photocatalytic asymmetric multicomponent cascade Minisci reaction of β‐carbolines with enamides and diazo compounds is reported, enabling an effective enantioselective radical C─H functionalization of β‐carbolines with high yields and enantioselectivity (up to 83% yield and 95% ee). This enantioselective multicomponent Minisci protocol exhibits step economy, high chemo‐/enantio‐selective control, and good functional group tolerance, allowing access to a variety of valuable chiral β‐carbolines. Notably, diazo compounds are suitable radical precursors in enantioselective cascade radical reactions. Moreover, the efficiency and practicality of this approach are demonstrated by the asymmetric synthesis of bioactive compounds and natural products. The study presents a photocatalytic asymmetric cascade Minisci reaction of β‐carbolines with enamides and diazo compounds, allowing for effective enantioselective radical C─H functionalization of β‐carbolines with high yields and enantioselectivity (up to 83% yield and 95% ee). The effectiveness and viability of this strategy are demonstrated through the asymmetric synthesis of bioactive compounds and natural product.
Modeling Analysis of the Relationship between Adolescent Aerobic Exercise and Obesity Reduction Based on Deep Learning
In order to explore the modeling analysis of the relationship between adolescent aerobic exercise and obesity reduction, the relationship modeling method of deep learning algorithm is proposed. This study integrates deep learning algorithms and first uses the changes in body shape, weight, BMI index, body fat, body circumference, and other indicators of adolescent obese before and after aerobic exercise as the initial pheromone distribution matrix and introduces random evolution factor and evolutionary drift threshold to establish the objective function of aerobic exercise to reduce adolescent obesity. It also explains the constraint conditions that aerobic exercise has to meet in the reduction of adolescent obesity and introduces particle algorithm to establish a model of optimal aerobic exercise to reduce adolescent obesity. The simulation results show that, under the same number of experiments, the advantages of this method are more obvious. On the overall level, the average modeling error of this method is about 0.053%, while the average of the traditional method is about 0.186%, indicating that the method can reduce the error control within a reasonable range. It proves that deep learning can effectively reflect the modeling analysis of the relationship between adolescent aerobic exercise and obesity reduction.
Selenium Compounds and Their Bioactivities: Molecular Mechanisms and Prospects for Functional Food and Therapeutic Applications
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for the human body and plays a vital role in various physiological processes. Plants serve not only as a major dietary source of selenium but also as natural biofactories capable of synthesizing a wide range of organic selenium compounds. The bioavailability and toxicity of selenium are highly dependent on its chemical form, which can exert varying effects on human physiology. Among these, organic selenium species exhibit higher bioavailability, lower toxicity, and greater structural diversity. In recent years, plant-derived selenium-containing compounds—selenium-enriched proteins, peptides, polysaccharides, polyphenols, and nanoselenium—have garnered increasing scientific attention. Through a systematic search of databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, this review provides a comprehensive overview of selenium uptake and transformation in plants, selenium metabolism in humans, and the classification, composition, structural features, and biological activities of plant-derived selenium compounds, thereby providing a theoretical basis for future research on functional foods and nutritional interventions.
Highly stable and tunable peptoid/hemin enzymatic mimetics with natural peroxidase-like activities
Developing tunable and stable peroxidase mimetics with high catalytic efficiency provides a promising opportunity to improve and expand enzymatic catalysis in lignin depolymerization. A class of peptoid-based peroxidase mimetics with tunable catalytic activity and high stability is developed by constructing peptoids and hemins into self-assembled crystalline nanomaterials. By varying peptoid side chain chemistry to tailor the microenvironment of active sites, these self-assembled peptoid/hemin nanomaterials (Pep/hemin) exhibit highly modulable catalytic activities toward two lignin model substrates 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine. Among them, a Pep/hemin complex containing the pyridyl side chain showed the best catalytic efficiency ( V max / K m  = 5.81 × 10 −3  s −1 ). These Pep/hemin catalysts are highly stable; kinetics studies suggest that they follow a peroxidase-like mechanism. Moreover, they exhibit a high efficacy on depolymerization of a biorefinery lignin. Because Pep/hemin catalysts are highly robust and tunable, we expect that they offer tremendous opportunities for lignin valorization to high value products. Peroxidase mimics are currently being investigated as catalysts for lignin depolymerisation. In this article, the authors investigate a class of self-assembled and highly stable peptoid/hemin nanomaterials as peroxidase mimics that are highly stable and tuneable for the depolymerisation of a biorefinery lignin.
High genetic diversity and different type VI secretion systems in Enterobacter species revealed by comparative genomics analysis
The human-pathogenic Enterobacter species are widely distributed in diverse environmental conditions, however, the understanding of the virulence factors and genetic variations within the genus is very limited. In this study, we performed comparative genomics analysis of 49 strains originated from diverse niches and belonged to eight Enterobacter species, in order to further understand the mechanism of adaption to the environment in Enterobacter . The results showed that they had an open pan-genome and high genomic diversity which allowed adaptation to distinctive ecological niches. We found the number of secretion systems was the highest among various virulence factors in these Enterobacter strains. Three types of T6SS gene clusters including T6SS-A, T6SS-B and T6SS-C were detected in most Enterobacter strains. T6SS-A and T6SS-B shared 13 specific core genes, but they had different gene structures, suggesting they probably have different biological functions. Notably, T6SS-C was restricted to E. cancerogenus . We detected a T6SS gene cluster, highly similar to T6SS-C (91.2%), in the remote related Citrobacter rodenitum , suggesting that this unique gene cluster was probably acquired by horizontal gene transfer. The genomes of Enterobacter strains possess high genetic diversity, limited number of conserved core genes, and multiple copies of T6SS gene clusters with differentiated structures, suggesting that the origins of T6SS were not by duplication instead by independent acquisition. These findings provide valuable information for better understanding of the functional features of Enterobacter species and their evolutionary relationships.
