Estimating Above-Ground Biomass of Maize Using Features Derived from UAV-Based RGB Imagery
The rapid, accurate, and economical estimation of crop above-ground biomass at the farm scale is crucial for precision agricultural management. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote-sensing system has a great application potential with the ability to obtain remote-sensing imagery with high temporal-spatial resolution. To verify the application potential of consumer-grade UAV RGB imagery in estimating maize above-ground biomass, vegetation indices and plant height derived from UAV RGB imagery were adopted. To obtain a more accurate observation, plant height was directly derived from UAV RGB point clouds. To search the optimal estimation method, the estimation performances of the models based on vegetation indices alone, based on plant height alone, and based on both vegetation indices and plant height were compared. The results showed that plant height directly derived from UAV RGB point clouds had a high correlation with ground-truth data with an R2 value of 0.90 and an RMSE value of 0.12 m. The above-ground biomass exponential regression models based on plant height alone had higher correlations for both fresh and dry above-ground biomass with R2 values of 0.77 and 0.76, respectively, compared to the linear regression model (both R2 values were 0.59). The vegetation indices derived from UAV RGB imagery had great potential to estimate maize above-ground biomass with R2 values ranging from 0.63 to 0.73. When estimating the above-ground biomass of maize by using multivariable linear regression based on vegetation indices, a higher correlation was obtained with an R2 value of 0.82. There was no significant improvement of the estimation performance when plant height derived from UAV RGB imagery was added into the multivariable linear regression model based on vegetation indices. When estimating crop above-ground biomass based on UAV RGB remote-sensing system alone, looking for optimized vegetation indices and establishing estimation models with high performance based on advanced algorithms (e.g., machine learning technology) may be a better way.
Assimilation of LAI Derived from UAV Multispectral Data into the SAFY Model to Estimate Maize Yield
In this study, we develop a method to estimate corn yield based on remote sensing data and ground monitoring data under different water treatments. Spatially explicit information on crop yields is essential for farmers and agricultural agencies to make well-informed decisions. One approach to estimate crop yield with remote sensing is data assimilation, which integrates sequential observations of canopy development from remote sensing into model simulations of crop growth processes. We found that leaf area index (LAI) inversion based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) vegetation index has a high accuracy, with R2 and root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.877 and 0.609, respectively. Maize yield estimation based on UAV remote sensing data and simple algorithm for yield (SAFY) crop model data assimilation has different yield estimation accuracy under different water treatments. This method can be used to estimate corn yield, where R2 is 0.855 and RMSE is 692.8kg/ha. Generally, the higher the water stress, the lower the estimation accuracy. Furthermore, we perform the yield estimate mapping at 2 m spatial resolution, which has a higher spatial resolution and accuracy than satellite remote sensing. The great potential of incorporating UAV observations with crop data to monitor crop yield, and improve agricultural management is therefore indicated.
Maize Canopy Temperature Extracted From UAV Thermal and RGB Imagery and Its Application in Water Stress Monitoring
To identify drought-tolerant crop cultivars or achieve a balance between water use and yield, accurate measurements of crop water stress are needed. In this study, the canopy temperature (Tc) of maize at the late vegetative stage was extracted from high-resolution red–green–blue (RGB, 1.25 cm) and thermal (7.8 cm) images taken by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). To reduce the number of parameters for crop water stress monitoring, four simple methods that require only Tc were identified: Tc, degrees above non-stress, standard deviation of Tc, and variation coefficient of Tc. The ground-truth temperatures obtained using a handheld infrared thermometer were used to calibrate the temperature obtained from the UAV thermal images and to evaluate the Tc extraction results. Measured leaf stomatal conductance values were used to evaluate the performance of the four Tc-based crop water stress indicators. The results showed a strong correlation between ground-truth Tc and Tc extracted by the red–green ratio index (RGRI)-Otsu method proposed in this study, with a coefficient of determination of 0.94 ( n = 15) and root mean square error value of 0.7°C. The RGRI-Otsu method was most accurate for estimating temperatures around 32.9°C, but the magnitude of residuals increased above and below this value. This phenomenon may be attributable to changes in canopy cover (leaf curling) under water stress, resulting in changes in the proportion of exposed sunlit soil in UAV thermal orthophotographs. Therefore, to improve the accuracy of maize canopy detection and extraction, optimal methods and better strategies for eliminating mixed pixels are needed. This study demonstrates the potential of using high-resolution UAV RGB images to supplement UAV thermal images for the accurate extraction of maize Tc.
Three-Dimensional-Scanning of Pipe Inner Walls Based on Line Laser
In this study, an innovative laser 3D-scanning technology is proposed to scan pipe inner walls in order to solve the problems of the exorbitant expenses and operational complexities of the current equipment for the 3D data acquisition of the pipe inner wall, and the difficulty of both the efficiency and accuracy of traditional light stripe-center extraction methods. The core of this technology is the monocular-structured light 3D scanner, the image processing strategy based on tracking speckles, and the improved gray barycenter method. The experimental results demonstrate a 52% reduction in the average standard error of the improved gray barycenter method when compared to the traditional gray barycenter method, along with an 83% decrease in the operation time when compared to the Steger method. In addition, the size data of the inner wall of the pipe obtained using this technology is accurate, and the average deviation of the inner diameter and length of the pipe is less than 0.13 mm and 0.41 mm, respectively. In general, it not only reduces the cost, but also ensures high efficiency and high precision, providing a new and efficient method for the 3D data acquisition of the inner wall of the pipe.
A Point-Cloud Segmentation Network Based on SqueezeNet and Time Series for Plants
The phenotyping of plant growth enriches our understanding of intricate genetic characteristics, paving the way for advancements in modern breeding and precision agriculture. Within the domain of phenotyping, segmenting 3D point clouds of plant organs is the basis of extracting plant phenotypic parameters. In this study, we introduce a novel method for point-cloud downsampling that adeptly mitigates the challenges posed by sample imbalances. In subsequent developments, we architect a deep learning framework founded on the principles of SqueezeNet for the segmentation of plant point clouds. In addition, we also use the time series as input variables, which effectively improves the segmentation accuracy of the network. Based on semantic segmentation, the MeanShift algorithm is employed to execute instance segmentation on the point-cloud data of crops. In semantic segmentation, the average Precision, Recall, F1-score, and IoU of maize reached 99.35%, 99.26%, 99.30%, and 98.61%, and the average Precision, Recall, F1-score, and IoU of tomato reached 97.98%, 97.92%, 97.95%, and 95.98%. In instance segmentation, the accuracy of maize and tomato reached 98.45% and 96.12%. This research holds the potential to advance the fields of plant phenotypic extraction, ideotype selection, and precision agriculture.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Borne Sensor System for Atmosphere-Particulate-Matter Measurements: Design and Experiments
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) particulate-matter (PM) monitoring system was developed that can perform three-dimensional stereoscopic observation of PM2.5 and PM10 in the atmosphere. The UAV monitoring system was mainly integrated by modules of data acquisition and processing, wireless data transmission, and global positioning system (GPS). Particularly, in this study, a ground measurement-control subsystem was added that can display and store collected data in real time and set up measurement scenarios, data-storage modes, and system sampling frequency as needed. The UAV PM monitoring system was calibrated via comparison with a national air-quality monitoring station; the data of both systems were highly correlated. Since rotation of the UAV propeller affects measured PM concentration, this study specifically tested this effect by setting up another identical monitoring system fixed at a tower as reference. The UAV systems worked simultaneously to collect data for comparison. A correction method for the propeller disturbance was proposed. Averaged relative errors for the PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations measured by the two systems were 6.2% and 6.6%, respectively, implying that the UAV system could be used for monitoring PM in an atmosphere environment.
Extracting maize canopy temperature based on unmanned aerial vehicle thermal and RGB imagery and its application to water stress monitoring
The accurate extraction of canopy temperature is the prerequisite for effectively monitoring crop water stress status based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) thermal remote sensing imagery. High-resolution (1.25 cm) UAV optical remote sensing imagery was used as the supplement to UAV thermal imagery for the accurate extraction of canopy temperature (Tc) of maize at the late vegetation stage. To reduce the number of parameters and the applied difficulty required for crop water stress monitoring, Tc, degrees above non-stress, standard deviation of canopy temperature and canopy temperature coefficient of variation which only need canopy temperature were chosen to monitor maize water stress. The ground-truth Tc obtained by a handheld infrared thermometer was used for temperature calibration of the UAV thermal imagery and evaluation of the Tc extraction results. Leaf stomatal conductance was used to evaluate the monitoring effect of the four Tc-based crop water stress indicators. The results showed there was a high correlation between Tc extracted by the co-registration approach (RGRI-Otsu method) proposed in this study and ground-truth Tc with R2 value of 0.94 (n=30) and RMSE value of 0.8 °C. When ground-truth Tc was less than 32.9 °C, a relative lower Tc was obtained by RGRI-Otsu method. However, when ground-truth Tc was greater than 32.9 °C, a relative higher Tc extraction result was obtained. The change of the proportion of shadow soil and shadow leaves, and lighted soil in the UAV thermal orthophoto which was caused by the change of maize LAI maybe the reason for this phenomenon. Tc had the best correlations with leaf stomatal conductance with R2 value of 0.76, indicating that Tc obtained by RGRI-Otsu method could effectively monitor maize water stress. This study demonstrates the potentiality of using high-resolution UAV optical imagery as the supplement to UAV thermal imagery for the accurate extraction of canopy temperature.
Application of Game Theory Weighting in Roof Water Inrush Risk Assessment: A Case Study of the Banji Coal Mine, China
Mine roof water inrush represents a prevalent hazard in mining operations, characterized by its concealed onset, abrupt occurrence, and high destructiveness. Since mine water inrush is controlled by multiple factors, rigorous risk assessment in hydrogeologically complex coal mines is critically important for operational safety. This study focuses on the roof water inrush hazard in coal seams of the Banji coal mine, China. The conventional water-conducting fracture zone height estimation formula was calibrated through comparative analysis of empirical models and analogous field measurements. Eight principal controlling factors were systematically selected, with subjective and objective weights assigned using AHP and EWM, respectively. Game theory was subsequently implemented to compute optimal combined weights. Based on this, the vulnerability index model and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model were constructed to assess the roof water inrush risk in the coal seams. The risk in the study area was classified into five levels: safe zone, relatively safe zone, transition zone, relatively hazardous zone, and hazardous zone. A zoning map of water inrush risk was generated using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. The results show that the safe zone is located in the western part of the study area, while the hazardous and relatively hazardous zones are situated in the eastern part. Among the two models, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model aligns more closely with actual engineering practices and demonstrates better predictive performance. It provides a reliable evaluation and prediction model for addressing roof water hazards in the Banji coal seam.
