Time‐restricted eating (TRE) is a promising strategy against metabolic disorders, but its effects on lipid metabolism remain controversial. The present research assesses and compares the impact of early (eTRE) versus late (lTRE) TRE on the plasma lipidomic profile. This is an exploratory outcome of the previously published randomized crossover trial, which examines 31 women with overweight or obesity who follow a two‐week eTRE and a two‐week lTRE in an intended isocaloric setting. Blood plasma and subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies are analyzed using shotgun lipidomics and transcriptomics, respectively. Between interventions and within the lTRE, lipid species and classes, as well as enzyme activity indices, are not substantially changed. Within the eTRE, changes are observed for 103 lipid species, including a reduction of ceramide and phosphatidylcholine classes, and for the desaturation indices D5D, D6D, and D9D, as well as the elongation index ELOVL6. Combined analysis of plasma lipidome and adipose tissue reveals alterations in the glycerophospholipid pathway and in the expression of phospholipase enzymes PLB1, PLA2G6, and PLAG4B, dependent on TRE timing. These results suggest that eating timing during TRE may be crucial for remodeling the plasma lipidome and adipose tissue transcriptome and highlight the need of future lipidomic research in TRE. Women with overweight or obesity follow intended isocaloric early and late time‐restricted eating (TRE) in a crossover trial. Shotgun plasma lipidomics reveals no significant differences between interventions, but identify pronounced lipid changes—including reductions in ceramides and phosphatidylcholines—within the early TRE. Integration with adipose tissue transcriptome data reveals the impact of eating timing on the glycerophospholipid pathway.

Twenty-Four Hour Glucose Profiles and Glycemic Variability during Intermittent Religious Dry Fasting and Time-Restricted Eating in Subjects without Diabetes: A Preliminary Study

Intermittent religious fasting increases the risk of hypo- and hyperglycemia in individuals with diabetes, but its impact on those without diabetes has been poorly investigated. The aim of this preliminary study was to examine the effects of religious Bahá’í fasting (BF) on glycemic control and variability and compare these effects with time-restricted eating (TRE). In a three-arm randomized controlled trial, 16 subjects without diabetes were assigned to a BF, TRE, or control group. Continuous glucose monitoring and food intake documentation were conducted before and during the 19 days of the intervention, and the 24 h mean glucose and glycemic variability indices were assessed. The BF and TRE groups, but not the control group, markedly reduced the daily eating window while maintaining macronutrient composition. Only the BF group decreased caloric intake (−677.8 ± 357.6 kcal, p = 0.013), body weight (−1.92 ± 0.95 kg, p = 0.011), and BMI (−0.65 ± 0.28 kg, p = 0.006). Higher maximum glucose values were observed during BF in the within-group (+1.41 ± 1.04, p = 0.039) and between-group comparisons (BF vs. control: p = 0.010; TRE vs. BF: p = 0.022). However, there were no alterations of the 24 h mean glucose, intra- and inter-day glycemic variability indices in any group. The proportions of time above and below the range (70–180 mg/dL) remained unchanged. BF and TRE do not exhibit negative effects on glycemic control and variability in subjects without diabetes.

Validation of a Smartphone Application for the Assessment of Dietary Compliance in an Intermittent Fasting Trial

Accurate dietary analysis of energy, nutrient intake, and meal timing in human studies using traditional dietary assessment methods (e.g., food records) is challenging and time-consuming. The widespread use of smartphones, tablets, and nutrition applications (apps) can overcome some of these problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the validity of an FDDB smartphone app and food database compared with PRODI®—a professional platform for nutritional counselling using the German Nutrient Database. Dietary records were collected from 10 subjects participating in the crossover intermittent fasting trial for 2 weeks at baseline and during the eating timeframe of 8 h (early or late in the course of the day). The FDDB app and database enabled a quicker and less sophisticated analysis of food composition and timing than the PRODI® software. Good agreement between the methods was found for energy and macronutrient intakes, while the FDDB data on most micronutrients and saturated/unsaturated fat intake were unreliable. In contrast to PRODI®, FDDB provided effective assessment of timely compliance, making it a promising tool for chrononutritional studies. Thus, the FDDB app is comparable to the traditional PRODI® dietary assessment method, and can be effectively used in human dietary trials and medical practice for specific goals.
