Luminescent, heterometallic terbium(III)–lutetium(III) terephthalate metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized via direct reaction between aqueous solutions of disodium terephthalate and nitrates of corresponding lanthanides by using two methods: synthesis from diluted and concentrated solutions. For (TbxLu1−x)2bdc3·nH2O MOFs (bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) containing more than 30 at. % of Tb3+, only one crystalline phase was formed: Ln2bdc3·4H2O. At lower Tb3+ concentrations, MOFs crystallized as the mixture of Ln2bdc3·4H2O and Ln2bdc3·10H2O (diluted solutions) or Ln2bdc3 (concentrated solutions). All synthesized samples that contained Tb3+ ions demonstrated bright green luminescence upon excitation into the 1ππ* excited state of terephthalate ions. The photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) of the compounds corresponding to the Ln2bdc3 crystalline phase were significantly larger than for Ln2bdc3·4H2O and Ln2bdc3·10H2O phases due to absence of quenching from water molecules possessing high-energy O-H vibrational modes. One of the synthesized materials, namely, (Tb0.1Lu0.9)2bdc3·1.4H2O, had one of the highest PLQY among Tb-based MOFs, 95%.

New heterometallic antenna terephthalate MOFs, namely, (EuxM1−x)2bdc3·4H2O (M = Y, La, Gd) (x = 0.001–1), were synthesized by a one-step method from aqueous solutions. The resulting compounds are isomorphic to each other; the crystalline phase corresponds to Ln2bdc3∙4H2O. Upon 300 nm excitation to the singlet excited state of terephthalate ions, all compounds exhibit a bright red emission corresponding to the of 5D0–7FJ (J = 0–4) f-f transitions of Eu3+ ions. The Eu(III) concentration dependence of the photophysical properties was carefully studied. We revealed that Gd-doping results in photoluminescence enhancement due to the heavy atom effect. To quantitatively compare the antenna effect among different compounds, we proposed the new approach, where the quantum yield of the 5D0 formation is used to characterize the efficiency of energy transfer from the ligand antenna to the Eu3+ emitter.

The structural features and luminescent properties of heterometallic Tb–Gd, Tb–La, and Tb–Y terephthalate metal–organic frameworks, namely (TbxM1−x)2(1,4-bdc)3∙4H2O (M = Gd, La, Y), were studied in detail in a wide concentration range (x = 0.001–1). The crystalline phase of synthesized compounds corresponds to Ln2(1,4-bdc)3·4H2O. The lifetime of 5D4 decreased with increased Tb3+ concentration, but PLQY depends non-linearly on the Tb3+ concentration. The 50% substitution of Tb3+ for Y3+, Gd3+, or La3+ ions result in the significant enhancement of photoluminescence quantum yield, up to 1.6 times. The morphology, thermal stability, and vibrational structure of the selected homo- and bi-metallic materials is reported as well.

Structure and properties of composite nanostructured coatings on steel
2024
In the recent years, the development of nanotechnology has increased the applications of nanoparticles, and the possibility of incorporating them into innovative composite coatings. In this paper, we aim to improve the corrosion resistance of 42CrMo4 and 65G steels by electroless chemical deposition of Ni, reinforced by adding of nanoparticles of nanodiamants (ND), boron (B) or cubic-BN (CBN). Consequently, by this approach we extend the useful-life of these mechanical parts, making them suitable for aerospace and automotive industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on influenza activity worldwide. However, as the pandemic progressed, influenza activity resumed. Here, we describe the influenza epidemic of high intensity of the 2022–2023 season. The epidemic had an early start and peaked in week 51.2022. The extremely high intensity of the epidemic may have been due to a significant decrease in herd immunity. The results of PCR-testing of 220,067 clinical samples revealed that the influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus dominated, causing 56.4% of positive cases, while A(H3N2) influenza subtype accounted for only 0.6%, and influenza B of Victoria lineage—for 34.3%. The influenza vaccine was found to be highly effective, with an estimated effectiveness of 92.7% in preventing admission with laboratory-confirmed influenza severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) cases and 54.7% in preventing influenza-like illness/acute respiratory illness (ILI/ARI) cases due to antigenic matching of circulated viruses with influenza vaccine strains for the season. Full genome next-generation sequencing of 1723 influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses showed that all of them fell within clade 6B.1A.5.a2; nine of them possessed H275Y substitution in the NA gene, a genetic marker of oseltamivir resistance. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses belonged to subclade 3C.2a1b.2a.2 with the genetic group 2b being dominant. All 433 influenza B viruses belonged to subclade V1A.3a.2 encoding HA1 substitutions A127T, P144L, and K203R, which could be further divided into two subgroups. None of the influenza A(H3N2) and B viruses sequenced had markers of resistance to NA inhibitors. Thus, despite the continuing circulation of Omicron descendant lineages, influenza activity has resumed in full force, raising concerns about the intensity of fore coming seasonal epidemics.

Current and Prospective Protein Biomarkers of Lung Cancer
2017
Lung cancer is a malignant lung tumor with various histological variants that arise from different cell types, such as bronchial epithelium, bronchioles, alveoli, or bronchial mucous glands. The clinical course and treatment efficacy of lung cancer depends on the histological variant of the tumor. Therefore, accurate identification of the histological type of cancer and respective protein biomarkers is crucial for adequate therapy. Due to the great diversity in the molecular-biological features of lung cancer histological types, detection is impossible without knowledge of the nature and origin of malignant cells, which release certain protein biomarkers into the bloodstream. To date, different panels of biomarkers are used for screening. Unfortunately, a uniform serum biomarker composition capable of distinguishing lung cancer types is yet to be discovered. As such, histological analyses of tumor biopsies and immunohistochemistry are the most frequently used methods for establishing correct diagnoses. Here, we discuss the recent advances in conventional and prospective aptamer based strategies for biomarker discovery. Aptamers like artificial antibodies can serve as molecular recognition elements for isolation detection and search of novel tumor-associated markers. Here we will describe how these small synthetic single stranded oligonucleotides can be used for lung cancer biomarker discovery and utilized for accurate diagnosis and targeted therapy. Furthermore, we describe the most frequently used in-clinic and novel lung cancer biomarkers, which suggest to have the ability of differentiating between histological types of lung cancer and defining metastasis rate.

Chromosomal abnormalities of the embryo are the most common cause of first-trimester pregnancy loss. In this single-center study, we assessed the frequency and the spectrum of chromosomal abnormalities in miscarriages for each year of maternal age from 23 to 44. Cytogenetic data were obtained by conventional karyotyping of 7118 miscarriages in women with naturally conceived pregnancies. Chromosomal abnormalities were identified in 67.25% of miscarriages. The total incidence of chromosomal abnormalities increased with maternal aging; however, its average change for a one-year increase in maternal age differed between age spans, equaling 0.704% in the span from 23 to 37 years and 2.095% in the span from 38 to 44 years. At the age of 38 years, the incidence rate surged sharply by 14.79% up to 79.01% and then increased progressively up to 94% in 44-year-old women. The spectrum of chromosomal abnormalities in miscarriages was the same for each year of maternal age from 23 to 44 years. However, the proportions of particular chromosomal abnormalities differed between karyotypically abnormal miscarriages in younger and older women. The proportions of trisomy 16, polyploidy, monosomy X, mosaic aneuploidies, and structural rearrangements decreased with increasing maternal age. In contrast, the proportions of multiple aneuploidies and regular trisomies 13, 15, 18, 21, and 22 showed an upward trend with maternal aging. To summarize, despite the increase in the total incidence of chromosomal abnormalities in miscarriages with maternal aging, the rate of change differs for younger and older women, being three times lower in the former than in the latter. Moreover, the proportion of some abnormalities in karyotypically abnormal miscarriages shows a steady growth, whereas the proportion of others becomes increasingly low with maternal aging, most probably due to the age-dependent prevalence of different molecular and cellular defects.

A simple, low-cost, and reproducible method for creating materials with even silver nanoparticles (AgNP) dispersion was established. Chitosan nanofibers with silica phase (CS/silica) were synthesized by an electrospinning technique to obtain highly porous 3D nanofiber scaffolds. Silver nanoparticles in the form of a well-dispersed metallic phase were synthesized in an external preparation step and embedded in the CS/silica nanofibers by deposition for obtaining chitosan nanofibers with silica phase decorated by silver nanoparticles (Ag/CS/silica). The antibacterial activity of investigated materials was tested using Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The results were compared with the properties of the nanocomposite without silver nanoparticles and a colloidal solution of AgNP. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of obtained AgNP against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) ATCC25923 and Escherichia coli (E. coli) ATCC25922 was determined. The physicochemical characterization of Ag/CS/silica nanofibers using various analytical techniques, as well as the applicability of these techniques in the characterization of this type of nanocomposite, is presented. The resulting Ag/CS/silica nanocomposites (Ag/CS/silica nanofibers) were characterized by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The morphology of the AgNP in solution, both initial and extracted from composite, the properties of composites, the size, and crystallinity of the nanoparticles, and the characteristics of the chitosan fibers were determined by electron microscopy (SEM and TEM).
