Exploratory factor analysis: Current use, methodological developments and recommendations for good practice
Psychological research often relies on Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). As the outcome of the analysis highly depends on the chosen settings, there is a strong need for guidelines in this context. Therefore, we want to examine the recent methodological developments as well as the current practice in psychological research. We reviewed ten years of studies containing EFAs and contrasted them with new methodological options. We focused on four major issues: an adequate sample size, the extraction method, the rotation method and the factor retention criterion determining the number of factors. Finally, we present modified recommendations based on these reviewed empirical studies and practical considerations.

Family style : memories of an American from Vietnam
\"Thien's first memory isn't a sight or a sound. It's the sweetness of watermelon and the saltiness of fish. It's the taste of the foods he ate while adrift at sea as his family fled Vietnam. After the Pham family arrives at a refugee camp in Thailand, they struggle to survive. Things don't get much easier once they resettle in California. And through each chapter of their lives, food takes on a new meaning. Strawberries come to signify struggle as Thien's mom and dad look for work. Potato chips are an indulgence that bring Thien so much joy that they become a necessity. Behind every cut of steak and inside every croissant lies a story. And for Thien Pham, that story is about a search-- for belonging, for happiness, for the American dream\"-- Back cover.

The use of hydrogen as a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels requires a suite of flammability mitigating technologies, particularly robust sensors for hydrogen leak detection and concentration monitoring. To this end, we have developed a class of lightweight optical hydrogen sensors based on a metasurface of Pd nano-patchy particle arrays, which fulfills the increasing requirements of a safe hydrogen fuel sensing system with no risk of sparking. The structure of the optical sensor is readily nano-engineered to yield extraordinarily rapid response to hydrogen gas (<3 s at 1 mbar H
2
) with a high degree of accuracy (<5%). By incorporating 20% Ag, Au or Co, the sensing performances of the Pd-alloy sensor are significantly enhanced, especially for the Pd

Co

sensor whose optical response time at 1 mbar of H
2
is just ~0.85 s, while preserving the excellent accuracy (<2.5%), limit of detection (2.5 ppm), and robustness against aging, temperature, and interfering gases. The superior performance of our sensor places it among the fastest and most sensitive optical hydrogen sensors.
Detecting hydrogen is important for development of renewable energy sources. Here, the authors present lightweight optical hydrogen sensors based on a metasurface of PdCo nano-patchy particle arrays, which achieve sensitive hydrogen detection in less than 1 s, and without risk of sparking.

PurposeThis study tests convergence in energy diversification, per-capita income and financial development and explores their interrelationships.Design/methodology/approachClub convergence tests, Granger tests and panel regressions are employed on 134 countries from 1995 to 2019.FindingsWhile overall convergence is absent across the entire sample, countries have converged within specific clubs. Low- and lower-middle-income countries show convergence in energy diversification and per-capita income. Positive bidirectional relationships are found between energy diversification and per-capita income, and between financial development and per-capita income. A U-shaped relationship between oil prices and energy diversification is identified.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings suggest that achieving a shared equilibrium in energy diversification, economic prosperity and financial development is feasible through technological progress within convergence clubs. Investments in human capital and technology are crucial prerequisites for sustainable development.Originality/valueThis study pioneers testing energy diversification, per-capita income and financial development convergence, investigating the tri-directional relationship between them, and exploring the U-shaped relationship between oil prices and energy diversification.

Factors influencing carbon-labeled product purchase intentions: A case study in Vietnam
2024
This study aims to examine university students’ intention to purchase carbon-labeled products in Can Tho City, Vietnam, as well as the main reasons driving the desire to purchase carbon-labeled products. A survey was conducted using quantitative analytic methodologies, and 234 students’ responses were obtained using Google Forms during the third quarter of 2023. Before surveying student participants, ten educational experts crafted and reviewed a questionnaire. The questionnaire had three sections. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and SPSS are used to assess the data. This study analyzed independent variables such as sustainable consumption habits, the green halo effect, carbon label visibility, and climate consciousness to consider their impact on the dependent variable of purchase intention. To guarantee the dependability of these variables, Cronbach’s Alpha was employed with a threshold set at 0.60. The findings demonstrate Vietnamese students’ comparatively low level of understanding regarding carbon labeling. Only 45.7% of the 234 survey participants claimed to have heard of carbon labels, compared to 54.3% who said they had never heard of them. Furthermore, sustainable consumption habits and the green halo effect directly impact the intentions to purchase carbon-labeled products, in which sustainable consumer habits play the most critical role. Carbon label visibility and climate consciousness do not directly influence the intention to buy, but these factors contribute to increasing purchase intention.

Takashige Ishii and colleagues report that the closed panicle phenotype in the cultivated rice,
Oryza sativa
, is controlled by the
OsLG1
gene. Closed panicles lead to higher seed retention, and the authors show evidence for selection at this locus during rice domestication.
Reduction in seed shattering was an important phenotypic change during cereal domestication
1
,
2
. Here we show that a simple morphological change in rice panicle shape, controlled by the
SPR3
locus, has a large impact on seed-shedding and pollinating behaviors. In the wild genetic background of rice, we found that plants with a cultivated-like type of closed panicle had significantly reduced seed shedding through seed retention. In addition, the long awns in closed panicles disturbed the free exposure of anthers and stigmas on the flowering spikelets, resulting in a significant reduction of the outcrossing rate. We localized the
SPR3
locus to a 9.3-kb genomic region, and our complementation tests suggest that this region regulates the liguleless gene (
OsLG1
). Sequencing analysis identified reduced nucleotide diversity and a selective sweep at the
SPR3
locus in cultivated rice. Our results suggest that a closed panicle was a selected trait during rice domestication.

PurposeThis paper explores the effect of tourism (national and international) indicators on income inequality in a sample of 21 Asia Pacific economies.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses panel data set from 1995 to 2020 and employs panel autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) method for the empirical investigation.FindingsThe empirical findings from the panel ARDL models suggest that all of the considered tourism indicators have significant negative impacts on income inequalities. The results remain consistent with alternative indicators and methods.Social implicationsThe findings of this study will be critical for the policymakers to take effective measures to reduce the income inequality. Such measures could include promoting tourism in general, focusing on attracting international tourists or domestic tourists, and putting more weight on developing leisure or business tourism, which will boost the overall economic performance and alleviates inequalities in the society.Originality/valueThis is the first study to consider various forms of tourism indicators to see their impact on income inequality in the Asia–Pacific region, and offers important implications for the policy actions.
