Herein, a brief overview of the cyclodextrin structure is provided, along with its most important derivatives. The difference between the water molecules in the outer hydration shell of cyclodextrin and those in its hydrophobic cavities is discussed. The structural characteristics of surfactants, along with their structural differences, are presented. An insight into the formation of surfactant micelles was given in aqueous solution. A thermodynamic model for the formation of the inclusion complex between surfactants and cyclodextrin in a solution is presented, explaining the hydrophobic effect, which drives the formation of the inclusion complex at lower and room temperatures. The influence of the size of the cyclodextrin cavity and the structure of surfactants on the stoichiometry of the inclusion complex, as well as on the affinity of the surfactant to the hydrophobic cavity of cyclodextrin, is discussed. The most important experimental methods used to study the cyclodextrin-surfactant inclusion complex are listed.

This study investigated the influence of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) on the micellization behavior of two bile salt surfactants, sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) and sodium cholate (NaC), in aqueous solutions. Tensiometry, conductometric, and spectrofluorimetric techniques were employed to determine critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the presence of varying concentrations of βCD, as well as in the presence of inorganic salts (NaCl and CsCl). The results showed that βCD forms inclusion complexes with both bile salts, leading to an increase in their CMCs, consistent with a competitive interaction between micelle formation and complexation. The inclusion constants, determined graphically, revealed stronger complexation for NaDC than NaC, attributed to differences in hydrophobic surface area. Salt addition decreased the CMC of both surfactants, with CsCl having a more pronounced effect. However, salt presence also modulated the inclusion complex formation, suggesting specific ion effects influence the availability and behavior of βCD. These findings contribute to the understanding of bile salt–cyclodextrin interactions and their modulation by electrolytes, with implications for drug delivery and supramolecular chemistry.

Pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic formulations often contain binary or ternary surfactant mixtures with synergistic interactions amongst micellar building blocks. Here, a ternary mixture of the surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, and sodium deoxycholate is examined to see if the molar fractions of the surfactants in the ternary mixed micellar pseudophase are determined by the interaction coefficients between various pairs of the surfactants or by their propensity to self-associate. Critical micelle concentrations (CMC) of the analyzed ternary mixtures are determined experimentally (spectrofluorimetrically using pyrene as the probe molecule). Thermodynamic parameters of ternary mixtures are calculated from CMC values using the Regular Solution protocol. The tendency for monocomponent surfactants to self-associate (lower value of CMC) determines the molar fractions of surfactant in the mixed micelle if there is no issue with the packing of the micelle building units of the ternary mixed micelle. If a more hydrophobic surfactant is incorporated into the mixed micelle, the system (an aqueous solution of surfactants) is then the most thermodynamically stabilized.

In this study, a battery case was developed using a 3D (three dimensional)-printed composite of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and polylactic acid (PLA) to enhance the thermal performance of lithium-ion battery (LiB) modules. A 10 wt.% amount of hBN was incorporated into the PLA matrix to improve the composite’s thermal conductivity while maintaining electrical insulation. A 3S2P (3 series and 2 parallel) battery configuration was initially evaluated based on the results of a baseline study for comparison and subsequently subjected to a newly developed test procedure to assess the thermal behavior of the designed case under identical environmental conditions. Initially, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were utilized for material characterization, and their results verified the successful integration of hBN by confirming its presence in the hBN-PLA composite. In thermal tests, experimental results revealed that the fabricated hBN-PLA composite battery case significantly enhanced heat conduction and reduced surface temperature gradients compared to the previous baseline study with no case. Specifically, the maximum cell temperature (T [sub.max]) decreased from 48.54 °C to 45.84 °C, and the temperature difference (ΔT) between the hottest and coldest cells was reduced from 4.65 °C to 3.75 °C, corresponding to an improvement of approximately 20%. A 3S2P LiB module was also tested under identical environmental conditions using a multi-cycle charge–discharge procedure designed to replicate real electric vehicle (EV) operation. Each cycle consisted of sequential low and high discharge zones with gradually increased current values from 2 A to 14 A followed by controlled charging and rest intervals. During the experimental procedure, the average ΔT between the cells was recorded as 2.38 °C, with a maximum value of 3.50 °C. These results collectively demonstrate that the 3D-printed hBN-PLA composite provides an effective and lightweight passive cooling solution for improving the thermal stability and safety of LiB modules in EV applications.

Background: Evidence regarding the effects of twisting hamstring tendons on graft properties in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction remains controversial. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of a 180° twist on the tensile properties of human hamstring tendon grafts (HTGs). Methods: Fourteen human cadavers were included, and hamstring tendons (semitendinosus [ST] and gracilis [GR]) were harvested bilaterally. Matched pairs of tendons were allocated to the ST and GR groups and further subdivided into control (ST-0, GR-0) and experimental (ST-180, GR-180) subgroups. Standard tripled single-tendon grafts were prepared in the control groups, while grafts in the experimental groups were twisted by 180°. All grafts were preconditioned and tested using a universal testing machine (Shimadzu AGS-X, Shimadzu Corporation, Japan) to determine tensile strength, stiffness, tensile modulus, and energy absorption capacity. Results: In the semitendinosus group, the maximum force was 648.72 (±287.71) N for ST-0 and 853.11 (±189.14) N for ST-180, with energy absorption capacities of 9.21 (±4.47) J and 13.48 (±4.95) J, respectively. Although the mean values of the investigated parameters were consistently higher in the ST-180 group, these differences did not reach statistical significance. In the gracilis group, no statistically significant differences were observed between the GR-0 and GR-180 subgroups for any parameter. Conclusions: Twisting hamstring tendons by 180° during graft preparation results in limited alterations of biomechanical properties, without statistically significant improvements. These findings call into question the clinical relevance of this technique in enhancing graft material properties for ACL reconstruction.

From the very start of their use until today, processes in Additive Manufacturing (AM) have found a way to grow from prototype production to individual and small-series production. Improvements in machinery, materials and other challenges in AM development have improved product quality, its mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy. Research in the field of dimensional accuracy must be focused on achieving better tolerances. From the beginning of AM, there has been a big issue in assuring dimensional repeatability and reproducibility of a part being printed over the course of several days. In order to examine that, a test plate was designed and built repeatedly with PolyJet technology over the course of several weeks. Measurements of dimensional accuracy and shape deviations of several typical features were carried out using X-ray Computed Tomography. Measurement results were analysed and presented in order to indicate the repeatability and reproducibility of PolyJet AM technology. Results show that PolyJet technology consistently produces parts within ±100 μm, at a 95% confidence interval, under reproducibility conditions of over a 1-month period. Accuracy for measurands (distance) in the x and y axis was significantly better than it was for the z axis which was from 56 to 197 µm, i.e., in the x and y axis, it was from −8 to 76 µm. Shape errors (i.e., cylindricity) were larger than positional or dimensional errors; this can be attributed to relatively large surface roughness and small feature sizes on the test plate that was used.

Microreactor Production by PolyJet Matrix 3D-Printing Technology
2019
This work investigates the methodology of producing a 3D-printed microreactor from the acrylic resin by PolyJet Matrix process. The PolyJet Matrix technology employs different materials or their combinations to generate 3D-printed structures, from small ones to complex geometries, with different material properties. Experimental and numerical methods served for the evaluation of the geometry and production of the microreactor and its hydrodynamic characterization. The operational limits of the single-phase flow in the microchannels, further improvements and possible applications of the microreactor were assessed based on the hydrodynamic characterization.

Optimization of Thermal Conductivity and Tensile Properties of High-Density Polyethylene by Addition of Expanded Graphite and Boron Nitride
2023
Due to its mechanical, rheological, and chemical properties, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used as a material for producing the pipes for transport of various media. Low thermal conductivity (0.4 W/mK) narrows down the usage of HDPE in the heat exchanger systems. The main goal of the work is to reduce the vertical depth of the HDPE pipe buried in the borehole by increasing the thermal conductivity of the material. This property can be improved by adding certain additives to the pure HDPE matrix. Composites made of HDPE with metallic and non-metallic additives show increased thermal conductivity several times compared to the thermal conductivity of pure HDPE. Those additives affect the mechanical properties too, by enhancing or degrading them. In this research, the thermal conductivity and tensile properties of composite made of HDPE matrix and two types of additives, expanded graphite (EG) and boron nitride (BN), were tested. Micro-sized particles of EG and two different sizes of BN particles, micro and nano, were used to produce composite. The objective behind utilizing composite materials featuring dual additives is twofold: firstly, to enhance thermal properties, and secondly, to improve mechanical properties when compared with the pure HDPE. As anticipated, the thermal conductivity of the composites exhibited an eightfold rise in comparison to the pure HDPE. The tensile modulus experienced augmentation across all variations of additive ratios within the composites, albeit with a marginal reduction in tensile strength. This implies that the composite retains a value similar to pure HDPE in terms of tensile strength. Apart from the enhancement observed in all the aforementioned properties, the most significant downside of these composites pertains to their strain at yield, which experienced a reduction, declining from the initial 8.5% found in pure HDPE to a range spanning from 6.6% to 1.8%, dependent upon the specific additive ratios and the size of the BN particles.

Polymer products manufactured by additive processes are today increasingly flooding the market. Given that they have broad application ranging from various consumer products to medicine and automotive industry, the products must satisfy certain mechanical properties. In the past studies of selective laser sintering (SLS) for polymer materials, the processing parameter of energy density has been confirmed which affects the tensile properties. Energy density depends on the laser beam speed, laser power and hatch distance; however, in this paper the existing mathematical model has been expanded by the overlay ratio and tests have been conducted how on the basis of the new mathematical model a product with good tensile properties (tensile strength, tensile strength at break, tensile modulus, tensile strain at break) can be manufactured. However, in parameter selection as well, the layer thickness and the manufacturing strategy also play a role, and they may shorten the time and reduce the cost necessary to manufacture a new product from the initial concept to production. The paper also provides a proposal of processing parameters (laser beam speed, laser power and energy density) depending on the manufacturing strategy and layer thickness.

This research follows the principles of circular economy through the zero waste concept and cascade approach performed in two steps. Our paper focuses on the first step and explores the characteristics of developed biocomposite materials made from a biodegradable poly(lactic acid) polymer (PLA) reinforced with natural fibers isolated from the second generation of biomass (agricultural biomass and weeds). Two plants, Spartium junceum L. (SJL) and Sida hermaphrodita (SH), were applied. To enhance their mechanical, thermal, and antimicrobial properties, their modification was performed with environmentally friendly additives—linseed oil (LO), organo-modified montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT), milled cork (MC), and zinc oxide (ZnO). The results revealed that SH fibers exhibited 38.92% higher tensile strength than SJL fibers. Composites reinforced with SH fibers modified only with LO displayed a 27.33% increase in tensile strength compared to neat PLA. The addition of LO improved the thermal stability of both biocomposites by approximately 5–7 °C. Furthermore, the inclusion of MMT filler significantly reduced the flammability, lowering the heat release rate to 30.25%, and enabling the categorization of developed biocomposite in a group of flame retardants. In the second step, all waste streams generated during the fibers extraction process are repurposed into the production of solid biofuels (pellets, briquettes) or biogas (bio)methane.
