Social Innovations for Improving Compostable Packaging Waste Management in CE: A Multi-Solution Perspective
Compostable packaging is one of the innovative alternatives to conventional packaging. This is also an opportunity in view of the current energy crisis and rising oil prices, firstly, because compostable packaging is produced only from renewable resources, and secondly, it can feed both the composting process and biogas plants. According to the CE principles, it is vital to effectively close product life cycles. Therefore, this paper is aimed at expounding the triggering role of social innovations co-created by stakeholders for improving compostable packaging waste management in accordance with the CE concept. The research procedure consisted of four integrated research phases. A qualitive study was undertaken by conducting 29 in-depth interviews and 3 Social Innovation Labs, engaging 67 bio-packaging market stakeholders, which are national and international companies (e.g., manufacturing, distributing), institutions and other organisations from the social, public and private sectors. The results show that one of the key problems for the development of the CE compostable packaging market is the low level of compostable waste packaging management. Its detailed analysis showed that this problem is associated with several barriers and their numerous causes. According to stakeholders, this can be effectively minimised by applying three social innovations that when combined stimulate all elements of waste management, moving it to a higher level of development.
COVID-19 and the pursuit of supply chain resilience: reactions and “lessons learned” from logistics service providers (LSPs)
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide new insights into the reactions and lessons learned with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of how logistics service providers (LSPs) managed to maintain supply chains resilience and what focus areas have been changed to keep operations functional and uphold financial stability. Design/methodology/approach Based on data-gathering techniques in interpretive research this study collected primary data via semi-structured interviews, interviewing informants from selected LSPs that operate on a global scale. Findings The results show that LSPs have built their reactions and actions to the COVID-19 outbreak around five main themes: “create revenue streams,” “enhance operational transport flexibility,” “enforce digitalization and data management,” “optimize logistics infrastructure” and “optimize personnel capacity.” These pillars build the foundation to LSP resilience that enables supply chains to stay resilient during an external shock of high impact and low probability. Originality/value The results of this study provide insights into how LSPs have managed the downsides and found innovative ways to overcome operational and financial challenges during the COVID-19 outbreak. As one of the first studies that specially focuses on the role of LSPs during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study categorizes the LSPs’ reactions and provides a “lessons learned” framework from a managerial perspective. From a theoretical perspective, this paper discusses the strategic role of LSPs in supply chain management and thereby extends current supply chain literature with a focus on LSP resilience.
How to improve freight transport emissions' management?
Background: To fight against climate change, the EU is committed to the world’s most ambitious climate and energy targets, i.e. CO2 reduction at least 20% by the year 2020 and 80-95% by 2050, in reference to 1990. This paper aims to look at the problem of freight transport emissions’ measurement and management in order to reduce CO2. The focus is on the chemical industry itself. The authors try to answer following research questions: (i) Do chemical and logistics companies in Poland measure and manage freight transport emissions? (ii) Where do they see the biggest challenges to emissions’ management and how do they address them? (iii) Is a toolbox facilitating modal shift able to increase the usage of multimodal transport by chemical and logistics companies? Methods: The research problem is investigated using a two-stage effort. Stage one is structured, in-depth interviews conducted among chemical and logistics companies operating in Poland. The results of this stage have provided the base for the toolbox developed to facilitate the modal shift in chemical transports. Stage two presents the results of the toolbox’s beta-version tests conducted among chemical companies in Poland in 2017. Results: Within the findings, the authors diagnose the obstacles which prevent companies from multimodal transport, and present toolbox consisting of: consulting services, multimodal planning guidelines, IT visualization, and CO2 calculator. The toolbox facilitates transport partners’ cooperation on shifting chemical freight from road to multimodal. Conclusions: With technological developments, which strongly influence shippers and transport providers and offer improvement opportunities in efficient transport management, the topic of freight transport emissions’ measurement and management in order to reduce CO2 should be investigated in more detail.
The Economic Function of Land Use and its Selected Ecosystem Services
Originality/Value: Theoretical considerations complement the research conducted so far in shaping the functions of the land and its ecosystem services and may become a valuable resource of valuable knowledge in the preparation of dissertations in the field of economic use of the environment.
Analysis of the Agricultural Land Market in Selected Poviats of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship
Originality/Value: The results of the comparative analysis and theoretical considerations supplement the research conducted so far in the field of prices on the agricultural land market in Poland and may become a valuable resource of knowledge useful in the preparation of dissertations in the field of agricultural property management.
