Levels of anxiety sensitivity, somatosensory amplification and alexithymia in patients with unexplained infertility
Objective In this study, we aimed to focus on the psychological aspect of unexplained infertility by comparing their psychological features to those of infertile patients with a known causes and fertile patients. Patients and methods Sixty unexplained infertility patients, 50 infertile patients with a known cause and 56 fertile patients were included in the study. Patients were evaluated using socio‐demographic data form, Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS‐20), Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SAS) and Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI‐3). Results No significant differences in the levels of alexithymia, somatosensory amplification and anxiety sensitivity were detected between the groups (P > .05). When the correlation of clinical scale scores with each other was analysed in the whole group of infertile patients regardless of the cause, a weak positive correlation was found between anxiety sensitivity and difficulty in identifying feelings. Conclusion In our study, it has been found out that; regardless of the knowledge of the aetiology of infertility, the levels of alexithymia, somatosensory amplification and anxiety sensitivity of infertile cases did not differ from those of fertile women. However, it has been shown that as the difficulty in identifying emotions increases in infertile cases, anxiety sensitivity, which may cause psychological infertility, also increases.
The evaluation of headache in patients with schizophrenia: a case-control study
The aim of this study is to explore the frequency and the types of headache in patients with schizophrenia and to compare it with the healthy control group. A hundred and one patients and eighty nine healthy subjects were included in this case-control study. Socio-demographic data form, structured clinical interview for DSM disorders type 1 (SCID-1), Scale for the Assessment of the Negative Symptoms (SANS) and of the Positive Symptoms (SAPS) were applied. The subjects with headache were consulted to the neurology clinic. The prevalence of headache in the patient group was 38.6% whereas the prevalence of headache in the control group was 37.1%. Tension type headache (TTH) was the most prominent type in both group (31.7% of patients, 18.0% of controls) and the presence of TTH in patients with schizophrenia was found statistically significant. Migraine type headache was detected in 2.0% of patients and 11.2% of controls. The ratio of headache was lesser in patients than in the controls. Schizophrenic patients have headache as much as the healthy subjects but they complain less about their headache than the controls do. Further studies with larger samples in patients with schizophrenia would present the importance of the issue and improve the quality of life in patients with schizophrenia contributing the analgesia.
Gender Differences in Terms of Psychological Symptoms and Nicotine Dependence among Smokers
[LANGUAGE= \"English\"] INTRODUCTION: This study aims to determine the differences between genders in terms of nicotine dependence severity and psychological symptom levels in individuals applied to the smoking cessation clinic.METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the smoking cessation outpatient clinic of Kackar State Hospital between June 1 and December 30, 2017. Sociodemographic form, Symptom Checklist-90-revised (SCL-90-R) and Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) were administered to the partici-pants.RESULTS: A total of 224 participants were enrolled in this study and 124 (55.4%) were male. The median FTND score was 7.0 [5.0-9.0] in female and 8.0 [6.0-8.0] in male (p=0.232). FTND score was associated with somatization symptom level of SCL-90-R and daily tea consumption in male participants (r=0.215 and p=0.017; r=0.244 and p<0.006). Also, the number of cigarettes smoked per day was associated with subgroups of SCL-90-R in male participants (r=0.193 and p=0.032 for somatization; r=0.177 and p=0.049 for depression; r=0.257 and p<0.004 for anxiety; r=0.225 and p=0.012 for phobic anxiety; r=0.238 and p=0.008 for psychoticism; r=0.272 and p=0.002 for additional symptoms; r=0.220 and p=0.014 for general symptoms.DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Clinicians should keep in mind that patients who want to quit smoking may also suffer from psychological symptoms that need to be addressed. There was no difference in the level of nicotine dependence between men and women smokers, however the psychological symptom levels were noted to be higher in women, and the severity of nicotine dependence was correlated with somatization score in men.
