Photo-bioconvection: Towards light-control of flows in active suspensions
The persistent motility of individual constituents in microbial suspensions represents a prime example of the so-called active matter systems. Cells consume energy, exert forces and move, overall releasing the constraints of equilibrium statistical mechanics of passive elements and allowing for complex spatio-temporal patterns to emerge. Moreover, when subject to physico-chemical stimuli their collective behaviour often drives large-scale instabilities of a hydrodynamic nature, with implications for biomixing in natural environments and incipient industrial applications. In turn, our ability to exert external control of these driving stimuli could be used to govern the emerging patterns. Light, being easily manipulable and, at the same time, an important stimulus for a wide variety of microorganisms, is particularly well suited to this end. In this paper, we will discuss the current state, developments and some of the emerging advances in the fundamentals and applications of light-induced bioconvection with a focus on recent experimental realizations and modelling efforts. Influence of intermittent fasting on myocardial infarction-induced cardiac remodeling
Background Information on the role of intermittent fasting (IF) on pathologic cardiac remodeling is scarce. We compared the effects of IF before and after myocardial infarction (MI) on rat cardiac remodeling and survival. Methods Wistar rats were intermittently fasted (food available every other day) or fed ad libitum for 12 weeks and then divided into three groups: AL – fed ad libitum; AL/IF - fed AL before MI and IF after MI; and IF – fed IF before and after MI. Echocardiogram was performed before MI and 2 and 12 weeks after surgery. Isolated hearts were evaluated in Langendorff preparations. Results Before surgery, body weight (BW) was lower in IF than AL. Final BW was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL. Perioperative mortality did not change between AL (31.3%) and IF (27.3%). Total mortality was lower in IF than AL. Before surgery, echocardiographic parameters did not differ between groups. Two weeks after surgery, MI size did not differ between groups. Twelve weeks after MI, left ventricular (LV) diastolic posterior wall thickness was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL. The percentage of variation of echocardiographic parameters between twelve and two weeks showed that MI size decreased in all groups and the reduction was higher in IF than AL/IF. In Langendorff preparations, LV volume at zero end-diastolic pressure (V0; AL: 0.41 ± 0.05; AL/IF: 0.34 ± 0.06; IF: 0.28 ± 0.05 mL) and at 25 mmHg end-diastolic pressure (V25; AL: 0.61 ± 0.05; AL/IF: 0.54 ± 0.07; IF: 0.44 ± 0.06 mL) was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL and V25 was lower in IF than AL/IF. V0/BW ratio was lower in IF than AL and LV weight/V0 ratio was higher in IF than AL. Myocyte diameter was lower in AL/IF and IF than AL (AL: 17.3 ± 1.70; AL/IF: 15.1 ± 2.21; IF: 13.4 ± 1.49 μm). Myocardial hydroxyproline concentration and gene expression of ANP, Serca 2a, and α- and β-myosin heavy chain did not differ between groups. Conclusion Intermittent fasting initiated before or after MI reduces myocyte hypertrophy and LV dilation. Myocardial fibrosis and fetal gene expression are not modulated by feeding regimens. Benefit is more evident when intermittent fasting is initiated before rather than after MI.
The impact of revascularization on myocardial blood flow as assessed by positron emission tomography
PurposeRevascularization aims to improve myocardial perfusion. However, changes in regional artery-specific quantitative perfusion after revascularization have not been systematically investigated. It is unclear whether artery-specific thresholds for coronary flow capacity (CFC) and/or relative perfusion predict improved stress perfusion after revascularization. We sought to determine the impact of revascularization based on predefined, artery-specific, severity size thresholds for CFC and/or relative perfusion defects.MethodsFifty patients underwent PET imaging before revascularization and then prospectively within 90 days after revascularization. Changes in regional myocardial blood flow (MBF) were stratified based on baseline perfusion abnormalities, baseline reduced CFC, and whether revascularization was performed in that region.ResultsFollowing angiographic stenosis-directed revascularization, in regions with relative perfusion abnormalities and decreased CFC, stress MBF (sMBF) increased by 0.51 cm3/min/g (59%) from baseline (p < 0.001). In regions without baseline perfusion abnormalities and yet decreased CFC, sMBF increased by 0.35 cm3/min/g (40%) from baseline (p < 0.001). In regions without perfusion abnormalities and normal CFC, sMBF did not increase significantly (+0.07 cm3/min/g, p = 0.56). Patients in whom revascularization was concordant with abnormal PET findings showed increased whole-heart sMBF (+0.22 cm3/min/g, p < 0.001), but in patients in whom revascularization was targeted only to regions without perfusion abnormalities or low CFC, sMBF did not change significantly (−0.06 cm3/min/g, p = 0.38).ConclusionRevascularization targeted to regions with reduced CFC and relative perfusion abnormalities on baseline PET yielded significant improvements in sMBF. When revascularization was performed in regions without reduced CFC, sMBF did not improve.
Sustainable concept in colonial residential in Lasem
Indonesia has lots of colonial heritage buildings, scattered in several cities. One of the old buildings is in Lasem city, not only functioning as residential, but also as a batik business place. Problem statement of this research is how colonial old residential building has sustainable system? The objective of this research are to know what kind of sustainable system applied in old colonial building, and to know how Lasem old building analysed by Vitruvius theory. This research is using qualitative method, using one Lasem colonial residential as a study case. The house as will be analysed whether it meets the requirements as sustainable building, or it also meets the criteria of a good building according to Vitruvius theory by meeting the firmity, utility and venustas. The result of this study, this building is both a sustainable building and also meets what is contained in Vitruvius theory.
Valvular Heart Disease in Cancer Patients: Etiology, Diagnosis, and Management
Opinion statement Cardiac valvular disease as consequence of radiation and chemotherapy during treatment for malignancy is growing in its awareness. While the overwhelming emphasis in this population has been on the monitoring and preservation of left ventricular systolic function, we are now developing a greater appreciation for the plethora of cardiac sequelae beyond this basic model. To this end many institutions across the country have developed cardio-oncology programs, which are collaborative practices between oncologists and cardiologists in order to minimize a patient’s cardiovascular risk while allowing them to receive the necessary treatment for their cancer. These programs also help to recognize early nuanced treatment complications such as valvular heart disease, and provide consultation for the most appropriate course of action. In this article we will discuss the etiology, prevalence, diagnosis, and current treatment options of valvular heart disease as the result of chemotherapy and radiation.
The application of Batak Toba ornaments in the architecture of the Catholic Church as an effort to design sustainable traditions
Batak Toba traditional house is one of the architectural treasures of the archipelago. Traditional Batak Toba House Architecture is a vernacular architecture that grows and develops from the local wisdom of ethnic communities and anchors on tradition, and is built by craftsmen based on experience (trial and error), using local techniques and materials and is an answer to the environmental settings where the building is located and always open to transformation. When building a Batak Toba traditional house, local people still understand the natural environment around the ecosystem. But in its current development, Batak Toba traditional community homes have undergone many changes, both in the form, space and use of ornaments and building materials. As a step so that the traditions of local wisdom are not extinct, it is necessary to preserve and apply the traditional forms and ornaments to the architecture of the Catholic Church as an effort to sustain the traditional architecture.
Chlamydomonas Swims with Two \Gears\ in a Eukaryotic Version of Run-and-Tumble Locomotion
The coordination of eukaryotic flagella is essential for many of the most basic processes of life (motility, sensing, and development), yet its emergence and regulation and its connection to locomotion are poorly understood. Previous studies show that the unicellular alga Chlamydomonas, widely regarded as an ideal system in which to study flagellar biology, swims forward by the synchronous action of its two flagella. Using high-speed imaging over long intervals, we found a richer behavior: A cell swimming in the dark stochastically switches between synchronous and asynchronous flagellar beating. Three-dimensional tracking shows that these regimes lead, respectively, to nearly straight swimming and to abrupt large reorientations, which yield a eukaryotic version of the \"run-and-tumble\" motion of peritrichously flagellated bacteria.

Anesthetic management and outcomes of parturients with dilated cardiomyopathy in an academic centre
Purpose This study examines the peripartum anesthetic management and outcomes of women with dilated cardiomyopathy in a large university medical centre over a seven-year period. Principal findings Twenty-five women were included in this series, 18 with a new diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and seven with a history of cardiomyopathy. Sixteen patients (64%) identified themselves as African American, seven (28%) were Caucasian, and two patients (8%) were Hispanic. The median (range) gestational age at the time of a new diagnosis of cardiomyopathy was 29 (7-38) weeks. Eight women (32%) had New York Heart Association class III/IV symptoms at the time of delivery or in the immediate postpartum period. A multidisciplinary team of obstetricians, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, and pediatricians were involved in the care of these women. The median (range) gestational age at the time of delivery was 33.5 (30-40) weeks. There were nine vaginal deliveries and 15 operative deliveries. One patient had fetal loss at 19 weeks gestation. Twelve women had labour induced with an intravenous infusion of oxytocin at a rate of 0.001-0.02 IU·min −1 . An oxytocin infusion at a variable rate with a maximum dose of 0.05 IU·min −1 was administered after vaginal delivery to maintain uterine tone. Epidural analgesia was initiated prior to induction of labour or in the latent phase of labour. Seven Cesarean deliveries were performed under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia, five were performed under epidural anesthesia, and three women had general anesthesia. Oxytocin was administered via an intravenous infusion at a rate of 0.05-0.2 IU·min −1 after operative delivery. One patient had a cardiac arrest on induction of general anesthesia and was successfully resuscitated. There were no maternal or neonatal deaths. Ten women were followed up at our institution and at six months postpartum; 50% of these patients were still symptomatic. Conclusion We report favourable outcomes in 25 pregnant women with dilated cardiomyopathy who were managed by a multidisciplinary team.
Rituximab-Induced Acute ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction
Rituximab has rarely been associated with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We report the case of a patient in whom rituximab, a monoclonal antibody used to treat lymphomas of B-cell origin, induced ST elevation myocardial infarction. A 46-year-old male patient diagnosed with stage II non-Hodgkin lymphoma presented to the emergency department with acute crushing, substernal chest pain that radiated to his back 1 day after a chemotherapy infusion with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone. An electrocardiogram revealed normal sinus rhythm with ST elevations in the inferior leads. The patient underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of his right coronary artery and first diagonal artery with placement of drug-eluting stents. He did well postprocedure and resumed therapy with rituximab under close monitoring by the cardiology and oncology departments without any further cardiac events. In patients with ACS because of chemotherapy, complete revascularization during PCI should be considered.
