As creator of Atheneum's children's imprint, [Jean Karl] was a major force in shaping modern children's fantasy publishing. She nurtured the careers of numerous now famous authors, including Ursula K. Le Guin, whose Earthsea books she all published at Atheneum. After A Wizard of Earthsea was first published by Parnassus Press, she reprinted the book to a much wider audience and published all Le Guin's subsequent children's fantasy books, including the rest of the Earthsea books.

[Bill Danner] joined SF fandom in 1945, publishing A Dangerous Thing for the Vanguard Amateur Press Association, later changing the name to Stefantasy. In VAPA he won polls naming him best humorist, and Stefantasy best publication. Though the first issue had a typeset and printed cover with the interior mimeographed, it soon became all type, handset by Danner and printed on a letterpress-a throwback to his roots in amateur journalism, which he maintained through the years.

Cartoonist Don Martin, 68, died from cancer on January 6th. Martin, who was with Mad Magazine for most of his working life, joined Cracked in 1987 after a disagreement with publisher William Gaines, who bought Martin's cartoons for a flat fee and did not pay for other rights.
