2023
HIV and sexual health in the UK: politics and public health
Critics would counter that screening for HIV and service restrictions are necessary to stem the tide of people whose main motivation for coming to the UK is to seek health treatment for this disease. However, data from a survey of recent arrivals to England with HIV, undertaken by the Terrence Higgins Trust,3 showed that three-quarters of people learned of their HIV status more than 9 months after entry to the UK, and over half were not diagnosed until they became unwell. Another study showed a similar result-70% of HIV-positive immigrants were unaware of their HIV status on arrival.4 With respect to HIV, these data, at least, dispel the myth that so-called treatment tourism is a problem.

White, pretty and rich, city girl Marit Laurens is among the most privileged in South Africa. But after the death of her parents and a hasty marriage to English immigrant Ben, her world is turned upside down. The couple establish a new farm on the country's borders, where guerilla war between white settlers and native blacks breaks out. When Ben is killed by freedom fighters, terrified Marit turns to an unlikely ally -- her housemaid Tembi.

The International Lesbian and Gay Association
1991
Europe, the birthplace of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA), remains the arena for the most successful campaigns of issues concerning gays and lesbians. The lack of international human rights law protection for lesbians and gays is discussed.
