Faruq and the wiri wiri
A Caribbean celebration of family and food - with a spicy twist! Faruq loves his grandmother, Ajee and her cooking! He hopes to be able to make cook-up rice just as good as Ajee's one day. But Ajee says that the kitchen is no place for a growing boy and insists that he study or play outdoors instead of learning to cook. So when Faruq's neighbor Mrs. Joseph offers to teach him to cook, Faruq jumps at the chance. Her kitchen fills with the smell of coconut, garlic and spices as they work together. But one day when Ajee is too sick to cook her typical Sunday meal, Faruq has a better idea. With the help of Mrs. Joseph, Faruq picks some wiri wiri peppers and starts cooking. Preparing food for his family fill's Faruq's heart with love and happiness, but will it convince Ajee and the rest of the family that he belongs in the kitchen? This sumptuous story celebrates Caribbean culture and food through Sophia Payne's distinct voice that is reflective of her Indo-Guyanese heritage and is brought to life by Sandhya Prabhat's beautiful artwork.
