Chemical Ions Affect Survival of Avian Cholera Organisms in Pondwater
Avian cholera (Pasteurella multocida) is a major disease of wild waterfowl, but its epizootiology remains little understood. Consequently, we examined whether chemical ions affected survival of avian cholera organisms in water collected from the Nebraska Rainwater Basin where avian cholera is enzootic. We tested the response of P. multocida to ammonium (NH4), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), nitrate (NO3), and ortho-phosphate (PO4) ions individually and in combination using a fractional factorial design divided into 4 blocks. High concentrations of Ca and Mg, singly or in combination, increased survival of P. multocida organisms (P < 0.001). We developed a survival index to predict whether or not specific ponds could be \"problem\" or \"nonproblem\" avian cholera sites based on concentrations of these ions in the water.

Spatial and temporal distributions of the spinose ear tick, Otobius megnini, within animal shelters at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center
Spinose ear ticks, Otobius megnini, are monoxenous parasites that feed deep in the inner ear of primarily ungulates, subjecting them to debilitating conditions such as a reduction in body weight, decreased milk-production, stress, or even death. Despite the importance of this tick in wildlife management, little is known about the spatial dispersion of ticks in animal shelters and temporal variation in their abundance. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to: 1) determine the temporal distribution of spinose ear tick abundance within animal shelters, 2) determine the spatial distribution of larvae and adults within animal shelters, and 3) examine the effects of climatic variables on tick abundance. I sampled two shelters biweekly for larval and adult ticks from August 2012 through July 2013. No temporal trend was identified for larval or adult ticks. Larval abundance was highest in quadrats located in the sampling area directly against the wall, while no difference was found in adult abundance among the three areas. Mean larval tick abundance was significantly correlated with mean temperature but not with mean relative humidity. Mean adult tick abundance was significantly correlated with mean relative humidity but not with mean temperature.
