Heady days
Coming from the land of the Petronas Twin Towers, you may be advised by some former Malaysians to give a miss to one of Auckland's attractions - the Sky Tower, in the city's central business district. Meanwhile, for nature lovers, don't miss Muriwai Regional Park, one of Auckland's most popular west coast beaches, which has a rugged coastline and 50km of surf beach and rolling dunes of black sand. On a media trip to Tauranga, south-east of Auckland, to visit our host Zespri International Limited's head office (Zespri is the world's largest exporter of kiwi fruit), a visit to the Ruakuri Caves in Waitomo, a small farming community west of Rotorua, were on the cards.
Fast track to adventure
Set on the side of Mt Ngongotaha, it has views of Rotorua city, Lake Rotorua (the largest of Rotorua's lakes) and geothermal activity. There's a family rate for two adults and two children that includes a gondola ride and six luge rides at around NZ$85. Luge rides for adults and children are NZ$9 per person but a gondola is NZ$24 for adults and NZ$12 for children. If you're ever in New Zealand's North Island, then you must make Rotorua, a geothermal wonderland, a must-visit.
Keen on Kiwi
Chef [Steve Roberts] shares recipes for Saute of Prawn with Zespri Fruit Salad and Chilli Lime Dressing, Seared Snapper on Wilted Asian Greens with a Zespri Kiwifruit Salsa and Won-Ton Crisps, and Tuile Baskets with Caramalised Kiwifruit and Vanilla Mascarpone. 3. Place bok choy in the centre of serving plate and top with the snapper fillet, place wonton crisps on top of snapper and place a spoonful of kiwifruit salsa on top, garnish with a little kicap manis (sweet soya sauce). Place all ingredients except kiwifruit in a saucepan on low heat until a light caramel forms, allow to cool and fold through diced kiwifruit.
Idyllic goa
Disembarking in Goa (593km south of Mumbai), the smallest state in India, at 11am, we had to be mindful of returning to our cruise ship SuperStar Libra by 6pm (we were on a five-day/four-night cruise of Mumbai-Kadmat Island-Goa-Mumbai a few months ago). Goa, said to have derived its name from the word goparashtra (nation of cowherds), was ruled by the Portuguese (colonised in the early 16th century until its annexation by India in 1961) for over 450 years. It's authentic Goan cuisine for lunch at Viva Panjim in Fontainhas (the cultural quarter of Goa's capital Panjim). The staple diet of Goans (yes, they're called Goans and not Goanese as commonly referred to) is white rice and fish curry.
Ex-hotelier makes good as TV host
\"I landed the main role and became the host as well,\" he recalls fondly. But his biggest break came last year when he was offered co- hosting duties with Sarimah Ibrahim (and now with TV personality Suhaimi Sulaiman) for 59 Communications' 520-episode talk show Malaysian 2020. The programme in Bahasa Malaysia is aired over TV1 on weekdays at 4.15pm, with repeats the following mornings at 12.15am and 11.15am for the next two years. His latest project is doing the voiceovers in another Produksi Seni 2020 offering, a 13-episode docu-drama called Kisah Hidupku, which touches on the lives of people, their tragedies and hardships. Already on air for the past two weeks ago, it is screened over TV1 on Tuesdays at 7pm. The show's second season, also 13 episodes, will begin production this month. [Warren Fernandez] will soon be hosting Dapat, a 150-episode infotainment programme produced by Cyberbang. The bilingual series will be aired over one of the terrestial stations in August.
Reel People to perform at music fest
Taking the sessions a notch further will be the Heineken Green Room Festival, a one-day event from 6pm onwards at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Club in Kuala Lumpur on July 17. \"For the past few years we have been doing the Green Room Sessions and giving quality acts at outlets supporting Heineken to draw more people to these outlets. After talking to industry people we've decided on a festival to draw a bigger crowd as the past venues were small,\" said Heineken spokesman Farrell Tan. Co-sponsors of the event are Samsung, MBf Cards, Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur and Souled Out Cafe, Desa Sri Hartamas in Kuala Lumpur.
