Updated checklist of the birds of Calabria (southern Italy)

Information on the avifauna of Calabria is still incomplete, with much of it contained in isolated studies, local reports and unpublished observations. More than thirty years have passed since the publication of the first regional checklist. The last ten years have seen an increase in fieldwork and collaboration amongst local ornithologists, now coordinated by the Stazione Ornitologica Calabrese (StOrCal). We provide an updated checklist of the birds of Calabria, revised through 31 December 2025, representing an increase of 43 species compared to the previous regional checklist of 320 species. The total number of taxa is 363 species and nine subspecies, divided as follows: 336 AERC category A, 12 B, 7 C, 5 AC and 3 E. General status codes were assigned to 258 regular species, 20 irregular species, 64 accidental/vagrant species and 21 historical species. Breeding status was assigned to 143 regularly breeding species, eight irregular, three occasional and four former breeding species. A total of 125 species are included in Annex I of Directive 2009/147/EC. National IUCN categories are known for 230 species, including nine Critically Endangered, 21 Endangered and 32 Vulnerable species. Taxonomy and status coding are from the national CISO–COI checklist.

Space–Time Patterns of Nest Site and Nesting Area Selection by the Italian Population of European Rollers: A 3-Year Study of a Farmland Bird Species

The European Roller Coracias garrulus has suffered greatly from breeding habitat loss due to the renovation of old farmhouses and rural buildings and changing agricultural practices that took place extensively across Europe in the last decades. As a consequence, this species experienced a significant decline, and local extinctions of breeding populations were recorded in several European countries. We investigated nest sites and nesting area selection by the Italian Roller population during the breeding period (May–August) between 2016 and 2018. We collected 711 points from field surveys and used four types of point pattern analysis to detect space-time patterns of nest site and nesting area selection. We found that: (a) the spatial distribution of selected (i.e., occupied) nest sites was significantly nonrandom (p < 0.01) for all years and months; (b) only 2.6% of the selected nest sites was located within parks or reserves; (c) there were significant (p < 0.01) latitudinal, longitudinal, and altitudinal shifts of selected nest sites between May and August; (d) the geographical barycentres of selected nest sites shifted northward by about 80 km per month from May (southernmost barycentre) to August (northernmost barycentre); (e) four main nesting areas (7886 km2 in total) occurred in central and southern Italy, whose utilization by the European Rollers differed between months but not between years; (f) the detected nesting areas corresponded mainly to non-irrigated arable lands (41.22% of their extent) and natural grasslands (12.80%). Our results are useful to support conservation strategies for the breeding sites of this farmland species, which is not a regular visitor to protected areas in Italy.

Increase of white stork Ciconia ciconia population attracted by artificial nesting platforms in Calabria, Italy

Between 2002 and 2012, the return of breeding pairs of white storks to Calabria, Italy, was encouraged through the installation of 46 artificial circular wooden platforms, of which 35 were supported on masts, nine on utility poles, and two on iron poles. The first platform nest was built in 2007, when there were just three breeding pairs of white storks at the site. By 2012, eleven nests were on artificial platforms, and the total white stork population at these sites had risen to 12 pairs. Between 2007 and 2012, 103 juveniles fledged from 30 nests located on platforms. More young fledged from nests on artificial platforms (4.0 ± 1.0 per nest), than from nests located elsewhere (3.4 ± 0.9 per nest). These results show that artificial platforms installed in suitable areas can be an effective in helping to increase breeding populations of white storks.

Most financial market players trade in government bond markets. For example, European financial institutions are heavily exposed to long positions in sovereign debt to raise funding at European Central Bank rates, and pension funds traditionally include Treasury bonds in their asset portfolio to obtain cashflows offsetting their liabilities. When the inherent credit risk associated with sovereign bonds could not be overlooked, wary investors could seek refuge in the credit default swap (CDS) market, but while a CDS provides perfect protection upon default, basis risk hinders profit and loss immunization to credit migrations and credit spread movements. Motivated by the need for market participants to hedge their exposure to sovereign asset swap levels, the author has shown how to derive an approximated closed-form solution for the pricing of constant maturity asset swap (ASW)-lets taking into account the (cross-)gamma cost inherent in a replication strategy based on dynamically buying/selling the forward ASW package.

This paper examines short-span bridge (SSB) integrity against floods. They represent the majority of road infrastructures and are often affected by hydraulic erosion and overlap during rainfalls. A method to classify and identify a set of SSBs in an assigned territory is illustrated. An analytical approach to evaluate the severity condition and priority of intervention is then presented, furnishing formulas for designing SSBs or evaluating the safety of existing ones. An emblematic case study, located on Sardinia Island (Italy), is described, applying the proposed approach in terms of hydraulic and structural loads to be considered. Finally, a discussion of the main obtained results is carried out, taking into account experiences due to recent floods and related collapses, with conclusions presented.

Exposure to the natural alkaloid Berberine affects cardiovascular system morphogenesis and functionality during zebrafish development

The plant-derived natural alkaloid berberine displays therapeutic potential to treat several pathological conditions, including dyslipidemias, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. However, data on berberine effects during embryonic development are scarce and in part controversial. In this study, using zebrafish embryos as vertebrate experimental model, we address the effects of berberine treatment on cardiovascular system development and functionality. Starting from the observation that berberine induces developmental toxicity and pericardial edema in a time- and concentration-dependent manner, we found that treated embryos display cardiac looping defects and, at later stages, present an abnormal heart characterized by a stretched morphology and atrial endocardial/myocardial detachment. Furthermore, berberine affected cardiac functionality of the embryos, promoting bradycardia and reducing the cardiac output, the atrial shortening fraction percentage and the atrial stroke volume. We also found that, during development, berberine interferes with the angiogenic process, without altering vascular permeability. These alterations are associated with increased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor aa (
vegfaa)
mRNA, suggesting an important role for Vegfaa as mediator of berberine-induced cardiovascular defects. Altogether, these data indicate that berberine treatment during vertebrate development leads to an impairment of cardiovascular system morphogenesis and functionality, suggesting a note of caution in its use during pregnancy and lactation.

The centrosomal OFD1 protein interacts with the translation machinery and regulates the synthesis of specific targets

Protein synthesis is traditionally associated with specific cytoplasmic compartments. We now show that OFD1, a centrosomal/basal body protein, interacts with components of the Preinitiation complex of translation (PIC) and of the eukaryotic Initiation Factor (eIF)4F complex and modulates the translation of specific mRNA targets in the kidney. We demonstrate that OFD1 cooperates with the mRNA binding protein Bicc1 to functionally control the protein synthesis machinery at the centrosome where also the PIC and eIF4F components were shown to localize in mammalian cells. Interestingly, Ofd1 and Bicc1 are both involved in renal cystogenesis and selected targets were shown to accumulate in two models of inherited renal cystic disease. Our results suggest a possible role for the centrosome as a specialized station to modulate translation for specific functions of the nearby ciliary structures and may provide functional clues for the understanding of renal cystic disease.
