Non-canonical regulation of SPL transcription factors by a human OTUBl-like deubiquitinase defines a new plant type rice associated with higher grain yield
Achieving increased grain productivity has long been the overriding focus of cereal breeding programs. The ideotype approach has been used to improve rice yield potential at the International Rice Research Institute and in China. However, the genetic basis of yield-related traits in rice remains unclear. Here, we show that a major quanti- tative trait locus, qNPT1, acts through the determination of a 'new plant type' (NPT) architecture characterized by fewer tillers, sturdier culms and larger panicles, and it encodes a deubiquitinating enzyme with homology to human OTUB1. Downregulation of OsOTUB1 enhances meristematic activity, resulting in reduced tiller number, increased grain number, enhanced grain weight and a consequent increase in grain yield in rice. Unlike human OTUB1, Os- OTUB1 can cleave both K48- and K63-1inked polyubiquitin. OsOTUB1 interacts with the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating protein OsUBC13 and the squamosa promoter-binding protein-like transcription factor OsSPL14. OsOTUB1 and OsSPL14 share common target genes, and their physical interaction limits K63-1inked ubiquitination (K63Ub) of OsSPL14, which in turn promotes K48Ub-dependent proteasomal degradation of OsSPL14. Conversely, loss-of-func- tion of OsOTUB1 is correlated with the accumulation of high levels of OsSPL14, resulting in the NPT architecture. We also demonstrated that pyramiding of high-yielding npH and depl-1 alleles provides a new strategy for increasing rice yield potential above what is currently achievable.
Imbalance of Fecal Microbiota at Newly Diagnosed Type Diabetes in Chinese Children
Background: Recent studies have indicated that an imbalance of gut microbiota is associated with the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus (TI DM) and there is no literature regarding it in Chinese children yet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the alteration of gut microbiota between children with newly diagnosed T 1DM and healthy controls and to determine if gut microbiota could partly explain the etiology of this disease. Methods: A case-control study was carried out with 15 children with T 1 DM and 15 healthy children. The fecal bacteria composition was investigated by high-throughput sequencing of the V3-V4 region of the 16S rDNA gene and analyzed by the estimators of community richness (Chao) indexes. Results: There was a notable lower richness of fecal bacteria in T1DM group than controls (156.53 ± 36.96 vs. 130.0 ± 32.85, P - 0.047). At the genus level, the composition of Blautia was increased in T 1 DM group than control group whereas the composition of Haemophilus, Lachnospira, Dialister, and Acidaminococcus was decreased. In addition, we found that the percentage of Blautia was correlated positively with HbA 1 c (p = 0.40, P - 0.031), the numbers of T1DM autoantibodies (p = 0.42, P = 0.023), and the titers of tyrosine phosphatase autoantibodies (IA-2) (p= 0.82, P = 0.000) in the study. Conclusions: This study showed that gut microbiota was associated with the development of T 1DM by affecting the autoimmunity, and the results suggested a potential therapy for T1DM via modulating the gut microbiota.
Unsteady aerodynamics modeling for flight dynamics application
In view of engineering application, it is practicable to decompose the aerodynamics into three components: the static aerodynamics, the aerodynamic increment due to steady rotations, and the aerodynamic increment due to unsteady separated and vortical flow. The first and the second components can be presented in conventional forms, while the third is described using a one-order differential equation and a radial-basis-function (RBF) network. For an aircraft configuration, the mathematical models of 6-component aerodynamic coefficients are set up from the wind tunnel test data of pitch, yaw, roll, and coupled yawroll large-amplitude oscillations. The flight dynamics of an aircraft is studied by the bifurcation analysis technique in the case of quasi-steady aerodynamics and unsteady aerodynamics, respectively. The results show that: (1) unsteady aerodynamics has no effect upon the existence of trim points, but affects their stability; (2) unsteady aerodynamics has great effects upon the existence, stability, and amplitudes of periodic solutions; and (3) unsteady aerodynamics changes the stable regions of trim points obviously. Furthermore, the dynamic responses of the aircraft to elevator deflections are inspected. It is shown that the unsteady aerodynamics is beneficial to dynamic stability for the present aircraft. Finally, the effects of unsteady aerodynamics on the post-stall maneuverability are analyzed by numerical simulation.
Effects of Si and Cr on Complete Decarburization Behavior of High Carbon Steels in Atmosphere of 2 vol. % O2
The effects of chemical compositions, especially silicon and chromium contents, on the complete decarburization behaviors of steels in atmosphere of 2 vol. %O2 and 98 vol. % N2 were investigated by using a simuhaneous thermal analyzer. Complete decarburization was observed at both 750 and 800 ℃ for 60Si2MnA steel, while 750℃ only for 92A steel. For GCr15 steel, no decarburization was found at 750 or 800 ℃, and only partial decarburization was observed at 850 ℃. It indicates that silicon promotes while chromium prevents the complete decarburization of steels in atmosphere with 2 vol. % O2. The main reason is that silicon increases while chromium reduces the equilib rium concentration of ferrite at the interface of ferrite and austenite, which results in the complete decarburization.

Impact of Satellite Constellations on Observations with the 80-cm Telescope and the Mini-SiTian at the Xinglong Observatory, NAOC
The rapid development of mega-constellations in low Earth orbit (LEO) severely impacts ground-based optical astronomical observations. By combining WorldWide Telescope (WWT) simulations with 2019 and 2023 observational data from the Xinglong Observatory 80-cm telescope and 2023 data from the Mini-SiTian (MST), we find that satellite visibility increases with deployment, particularly during the summer. For the 80-cm telescope, the fraction of images containing satellite trails increased from an average of 0.34% in 2019 to 0.7% in 2023; meanwhile, for the MST in 2023, the fraction rose from 5% in January to 12% by December, peaking at 19% in the summer. Through stratified analysis of solar elevation and local time, we find that observations during twilight and summer are particularly susceptible to satellite trail interference. Photometric analysis reveals that the interference intensity increases for fainter sources and those closer to the trails. Furthermore, a comparative analysis across different seeing conditions shows that the deviation of median standardized residuals () is significantly greater under poor seeing than under good seeing conditions.
Molecular characterization and expression analysis of Patched 1 gene in the half-smooth tongue sole(Cynoglossus semilaevis)
The signaling molecule hedgehog(Hh) is essential for cellular signaling required for body pattern formation in embryonic and individual development in vertebrate and invertebrates.Patched 1(Ptc1),a receptor of Hh,mediates the activity of Hh by binging the Hh ligands. In this study, the Ptc1 of half-smooth tongue sole Cynoglossus semilaevis(CsPtc1) was cloned and characterized. The full-length of CsPtc1 cDNA is 5 212 nucleotides(nt),and encodes a protein with 1 543 amino acid residues.CsPtc1 shared many features with Ptc1 of other telesot species.Real-time quantitative PCR revealed CsPtc1 mRNA expressed in brain, liver, heart, gill, intestines, spleen, gonad and kidney, with expression level in testis significantly higher than in ovary. In testis, hybridization signals were mainly detected in primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocytes, and sertoli cells, while weak signals were found in oocytes.Correspondingly, the degree of methylation is higher in female than in male and pseudomale. Results indicate that CsPtc1 may be involved in Desert Hedgehog(DHH) maintenance of the male and pseudo-male germ line and spermatogenesis.
Challenges and advances in materials and fabrication technologies of small-diameter vascular grafts
The arterial occlusive disease is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular diseases, often requiring revascularization. Lack of suitable small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs), infection, thrombosis, and intimal hyperplasia associated with synthetic vascular grafts lead to a low success rate of SDVGs (< 6 mm) transplantation in the clinical treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The development of fabrication technology along with vascular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine technology allows biological tissue-engineered vascular grafts to become living grafts, which can integrate, remodel, and repair the host vessels as well as respond to the surrounding mechanical and biochemical stimuli. Hence, they potentially alleviate the shortage of existing vascular grafts. This paper evaluates the current advanced fabrication technologies for SDVGs, including electrospinning, molding, 3D printing, decellularization, and so on. Various characteristics of synthetic polymers and surface modification methods are also introduced. In addition, it also provides interdisciplinary insights into the future of small-diameter prostheses and discusses vital factors and perspectives for developing such prostheses in clinical applications. We propose that the performance of SDVGs can be improved by integrating various technologies in the near future.
High-order superlattices by rolling up van der Waals heterostructures
Two-dimensional (2D) materials 1 , 2 and the associated van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures 3 – 7 have provided great flexibility for integrating distinct atomic layers beyond the traditional limits of lattice-matching requirements, through layer-by-layer mechanical restacking or sequential synthesis. However, the 2D vdW heterostructures explored so far have been usually limited to relatively simple heterostructures with a small number of blocks 8 – 18 . The preparation of high-order vdW superlattices with larger number of alternating units is exponentially more difficult, owing to the limited yield and material damage associated with each sequential restacking or synthesis step 8 – 29 . Here we report a straightforward approach to realizing high-order vdW superlattices by rolling up vdW heterostructures. We show that a capillary-force-driven rolling-up process can be used to delaminate synthetic SnS 2 /WSe 2 vdW heterostructures from the growth substrate and produce SnS 2 /WSe 2 roll-ups with alternating monolayers of WSe 2 and SnS 2 , thus forming high-order SnS 2 /WSe 2 vdW superlattices. The formation of these superlattices modulates the electronic band structure and the dimensionality, resulting in a transition of the transport characteristics from semiconducting to metallic, from 2D to one-dimensional (1D), with an angle-dependent linear magnetoresistance. This strategy can be extended to create diverse 2D/2D vdW superlattices, more complex 2D/2D/2D vdW superlattices, and beyond-2D materials, including three-dimensional (3D) thin-film materials and 1D nanowires, to generate mixed-dimensional vdW superlattices, such as 3D/2D, 3D/2D/2D, 1D/2D and 1D/3D/2D vdW superlattices. This study demonstrates a general approach to producing high-order vdW superlattices with widely variable material compositions, dimensions, chirality and topology, and defines a rich material platform for both fundamental studies and technological applications. A simple but flexible technique based on a capillary-force-driven rolling-up process produces high-order van der Waals superlattices that are hard to produce with existing fabrication techniques.
Van der Waals epitaxial growth of air-stable CrSe2 nanosheets with thickness-tunable magnetic order
The discovery of intrinsic ferromagnetism in ultrathin two-dimensional van der Waals crystals opens up exciting prospects for exploring magnetism in the ultimate two-dimensional limit. Here, we show that environmentally stable CrSe 2 nanosheets can be readily grown on a dangling-bond-free WSe 2 substrate with systematically tunable thickness down to the monolayer limit. These CrSe 2 /WSe 2 heterostructures display high-quality van der Waals interfaces with well-resolved moiré superlattices and ferromagnetic behaviour. We find no apparent change in surface roughness or magnetic properties after months of exposure in air. Our calculations suggest that charge transfer from the WSe 2 substrate and interlayer coupling within CrSe 2 play a critical role in the magnetic order in few-layer CrSe 2 nanosheets. The highly controllable growth of environmentally stable CrSe 2 nanosheets with tunable thickness defines a robust two-dimensional magnet for fundamental studies and potential applications in magnetoelectronic and spintronic devices. CrSe 2 nanosheets grown on WSe 2 show no apparent change in surface roughness or magnetic properties after months of exposure in air. Calculations suggest that charge transfer from the WSe 2 substrate and interlayer coupling within CrSe 2 play a critical role.
