Joint resource optimization in spectrum sharing decode and forward relaying networks
2021
This paper proposes an adaptive power allocation and subcarrier pairing algorithm for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based decode and forward cognitive radio networks, where primary and secondary users achieve spectrum sharing in the same frequency band. The secondary network tries to maximize its sum rate while ensuring that the interference introduced to the primary network is below an acceptable level. Although similar problems have been investigated in traditional cooperative communication networks, it’s still an open issue in cognitive radio networks due to interference thresholds. The power consumed by the secondary network is not only limited by its own power peak, but also by the interference threshold of the primary user. Our proposed algorithm not only allocates power and pairs subcarriers reasonably, but also specifies the conditions under which the relaying link is superior to the direct transmission. Simulation results show that the sum rate of the proposed algorithm exceeds other methods and obtains a significant performance gain.

The predicting role of circulating tumor DNA landscape in gastric cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors
2020
A more common and noninvasive predicting biomarker for programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) antibody remains to be explored. We assessed 46 patients with advanced gastric cancer who received PD-1 antibody immunotherapy and 425-genes next-generation sequencing (NGS) testing. Patients who had a > 25% decline in maximal somatic variant allelic frequency (maxVAF) had a longer progression free survival (PFS) and higher response rate than those who did not (7.3 months vs 3.6 months,
p
= 0.0011; 53.3% vs 13.3%,
p
= 0.06). The median PFS of patients with undetectable and detectable post-treatment circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) was 7.4 months vs. 4.9 months (
p
= 0.025). Mutation status of TGFBR2, RHOA, and PREX2 in baseline ctDNA influenced the PFS of immunotherapy (
p
< 0.05). Patients with alterations in CEBPA, FGFR4, MET or KMT2B (
p
= 0.09) gene had greater likelihood of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). ctDNA can serve as a potential biomarker of the response to immunotherapy in advanced gastric cancers, and its potential role in predicting irAEs worth further exploration.

Amassing of heavy metals in soils, vegetables and crop plants irrigated with wastewater: Health risk assessment of heavy metals in Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab, Pakistan
2023
Human health is the main concern related to use of crop products irrigated with contaminated irrigation sources. Present research has been conducted to explore heavy metal status of sewage and industrial wastewater being used up for irrigation purpose in the peri-urban areas of the district Dera Ghazi Khan which has not been explored widely before. The analysis also followed heavy metal detection in the subsequent irrigated soil and vegetables/crop plants in relation to assessment of health risk to the consumer to plan the future monitoring in this area. An unremitting boost of heavy metals into the environment from wastewater irrigation has become a global issue. These heavy metals enter the food chain and pose health assumptions to consumers upon utilization. In the present study, an investigation has been conducted to determine metal concentrations in the wastewater, soil, and different plant species. For wastewater samples, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), and selected heavy metals such as Al, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, and Ni were determined. The mean values of heavy metals in the soil samples were within the WHO/FAO safe limit, while Cr and Pb were the most frequent (100%) among the metals. However, differentiating the sites, the concentration of Cr and Cu, Ni, and Fe were elevated. The metal transfer was highly effective from soil to the growing plants i.e. brinjal, red corn, wheat, tomato, and spinach than other plant species. Among the metals, Cr, Ni, Mn, and Pb in plant samples were exceeding the WHO/FAO safe limit. Health risk index (HRI) have revealed the possible potential risk of heavy metal contaminated plant species in the order of spinach (6.4) > wheat (6.4) > brinjal (5.9) > tomato (4.7) > red corn (4.5) > apple gourd (4.3) > white corn (3.8) > cabbage (3.1) > luffa (2.9). Likewise, HRI of different metals was calculated as Cu (19.6) > Zn (17.9) > Cr (2.95) > Ni (0.85) > Mn (0.48) > Fe (0.15) > Cd (0.11) > Pb (0.05) > As (0.00001). The level of HRI through the use of dietary plants revealed an elevated risk level than the acceptable limit (HRI > 1) for Cu > Zn > Cr in adults. Our findings suggest that there would be a serious health risk to the consumers due to the consumption of these plant species being irrigated with the wastewater. Therefore, a strict regulatory mechanism is proposed for the safety of food plants in the study area including monitoring and recycling of crop plants, and building water treatment plants to remove pollutants and clean wastewater.

For centuries, Ganoderma has been used as a traditional medicine in Asian countries to prevent and treat various diseases. Numerous publications are stating that Ganoderma species have a variety of beneficial medicinal properties, and investigations on different metabolic regulations of Ganoderma species, extracts or isolated compounds have been performed both in vitro and in vivo. However, it has frequently been questioned whether Ganoderma is simply a dietary supplement for health or just a useful \"medication\" for restorative purposes. More than 600 chemical compounds including alkaloids, meroterpenoids, nucleobases, nucleosides, polysaccharides, proteins, steroids and triterpenes were extracted and identified from Ganoderma, with triterpenes serving as the primary components. In recent years, Ganoderma triterpenes and other small molecular constituents have aroused the interest of chemists and pharmacologists. Meanwhile, considering the significance of the triterpene constituents in the development of new drugs, this review describes 495 compounds from 25 Ganoderma species published between 1984 and 2022, commenting on their source, biosynthetic pathway, identification, biological activities and biosynthesis, together with applications of advanced analytical techniques to the characterization of Ganoderma triterpenoids.

Mobile Robot Vision Image Feature Recognition Method Based on Machine Vision
2023
In order to improve the efficiency and accuracy of mobile robot visual image feature recognition, a mobile robot visual image feature recognition method based on machine vision is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the development of mobile robot vision is analyzed, and the specific functions of robot visual feature recognition method are designed; Then, the Fourier series method is used to collect the mobile robot visual image, and the matrix associated with the autocorrelation function is calculated according to the Harris algorithm to complete the edge feature extraction of the mobile robot visual image; SIFT feature points of mobile robot visual image are classified, and mobile robot visual image feature recognition is realized through machine vision. The experimental results show that when the number of images is 600, the accuracy of image feature recognition and the loss value of image edge feature extraction of this method are 96.98% and 6.38%, respectively, and the number of iterations is 500. The time of visual image feature recognition of this method is only 3 minutes; The method has the lowest error mean and error variance under different noise conditions. This method can effectively improve the efficiency and accuracy of image feature recognition.

Background
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) with neuronic development and function is a promising therapeutic agent for treating depressive disorder, according to the neurotrophin hypothesis. However, the delivery of BDNF into the brain is not easy as these large protein molecules cannot efficiently cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and easily suffer oxidative damage in vivo. Therefore, the quercetin-based alginate nanogels (quercetin nanogels) loaded with BDNF have been developed, which could efficiently bypass the BBB via the nose-to-brain pathway and protect BDNF from oxidative damage, providing an effective route for the therapy of depressive disorders by intranasal delivery.
Results
Quercetin nanogels exhibited uniform size distribution, excellent biocompatibility, and potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Quercetin nanogels in the thermosensitive gel achieved sustained and controlled release of BDNF with non-Fick’s diffusion, exhibited rapid brain distribution, and achieved nearly 50-fold enhanced bioavailability compared to oral quercetin. Quercetin nanogels as a therapeutic drug delivery carrier exerted antidepressant effects on reserpine-induced rats, effectively delivered BDNF to reverse despair behavior in stress-induced mice, and exhibited antidepressant effects on chronic mild unpredictable stimulation (CUMS) rats. These antidepressant effects of BDNF-Quercetin nanogels for CUMS rats are associated with the regulation of the glutamatergic system, PI3K-Akt, and BDNF-TrkB signaling pathway.
Conclusions
In this study, we provide a promising strategy for brain delivery of BDNF for treating depressive disorders, effectively achieved through combining quercetin nanogels and intranasal administration.
Highlights
Natural antioxidant quercetin-based alginate nanogels protect BDNF from oxidative damage and have a quick brain distribution.
Intranasal quercetin nanogels exhibit significantly higher bioavailability compared to oral quercetin.
BDNF-Quercetin nanogels in thermosensitive gel release BDNF and quercetin in a sustained and controlled manner.
BDNF-Quercetin nanogels in thermosensitive gel have significant antidepressant effects on stress-induced mice and rats.

Iron and zinc micronutrients and soil inoculation of Trichoderma harzianum enhance wheat grain quality and yield
2022
Malnutrition is mainly caused by iron and zinc micronutrient deficiencies affecting about half of the world's population across the globe. Biofortification of staple crops is the right approach to overcome malnutrition and enhance nutrient contents in the daily food of humans. This study aimed to evaluate the role of foliar application of iron and zinc in Trichoderma harzianum treated soil on various growth characteristics, quality, and yield of wheat varieties. Plants were examined in the absence/presence of T. harzianum , and iron and zinc micronutrients in both optimal and high-stress conditions. Although the symbiotic association of T. harzianum and common wheat is utilized as an effective approach for wheat improvement because of the dynamic growth promoting the ability of the fungus, this association was found tremendously effective in the presence of foliar feeding of micronutrients for the enhancement of various growth parameters and quality of wheat. The utilization of this approach positively increased various growth parameters including spike length, grain mass, biomass, harvest index, and photosynthetic pigments. The beneficial role of T. harzianum in combination with zinc and iron in stimulating plant growth and its positive impact on the intensities of high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) alleles make it an interesting approach for application in eco-friendly agricultural systems. Further, this study suggests a possible alternative way that does not merely enhances the wheat yield but also its quality through proper biofortification of iron and zinc to fulfill the daily needs of micronutrients in staple food.

New clinical trial design in precision medicine: discovery, development and direction
2024
In the era of precision medicine, it has been increasingly recognized that individuals with a certain disease are complex and different from each other. Due to the underestimation of the significant heterogeneity across participants in traditional “one-size-fits-all” trials, patient-centered trials that could provide optimal therapy customization to individuals with specific biomarkers were developed including the basket, umbrella, and platform trial designs under the master protocol framework. In recent years, the successive FDA approval of indications based on biomarker-guided master protocol designs has demonstrated that these new clinical trials are ushering in tremendous opportunities. Despite the rapid increase in the number of basket, umbrella, and platform trials, the current clinical and research understanding of these new trial designs, as compared with traditional trial designs, remains limited. The majority of the research focuses on methodologies, and there is a lack of in-depth insight concerning the underlying biological logic of these new clinical trial designs. Therefore, we provide this comprehensive review of the discovery and development of basket, umbrella, and platform trials and their underlying logic from the perspective of precision medicine. Meanwhile, we discuss future directions on the potential development of these new clinical design in view of the “Precision Pro”, “Dynamic Precision”, and “Intelligent Precision”. This review would assist trial-related researchers to enhance the innovation and feasibility of clinical trial designs by expounding the underlying logic, which be essential to accelerate the progression of precision medicine.

This protocol provides an introduction to soft lithography—a collection of techniques based on printing, molding and embossing with an elastomeric stamp. Soft lithography provides access to three-dimensional and curved structures, tolerates a wide variety of materials, generates well-defined and controllable surface chemistries, and is generally compatible with biological applications. It is also low in cost, experimentally convenient and has emerged as a technology useful for a number of applications that include cell biology, microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip, microelectromechanical systems and flexible electronics/photonics. As examples, here we focus on three of the commonly used soft lithographic techniques: (i) microcontact printing of alkanethiols and proteins on gold-coated and glass substrates; (ii) replica molding for fabrication of microfluidic devices in poly(dimethyl siloxane), and of nanostructures in polyurethane or epoxy; and (iii) solvent-assisted micromolding of nanostructures in poly(methyl methacrylate).
