Global Life Satisfaction and General Antisocial Behavior in Young Individuals: The Mediating Role of Perceived Loneliness in Regard to Social Sustainability—A Preliminary Investigation
Healthy development can be viewed as an important dimension of the general wellbeing index and can be based upon lifelong sustainable satisfaction. Young individuals can represent an important component for society and its development. The literature shows that increased levels of global life satisfaction (LS) can be associated with minimal levels of problematic behaviors and elevated levels of pro-social behaviors. However, low levels of LS can be associated with high levels of perceived loneliness (PL), which, in turn, can be associated with antisocial behavior (AS). In light of this, the current investigation aims to study the mediating effect of PL and the link between LS and AS. This study is a preliminary investigation referring to aggressive behaviors and cognition in relation to subjective wellbeing. The sample consisted of 81 young individuals (M = 27.57, Standard Deviation = 9.25) from Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad, Romania. AS was evaluated with the How I Think Questionnaire (HIT), PL was measured with a single item inquiry and LS was evaluated with the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS). The results display that there is a powerful association between LS and AS, between LS and PL and between PL and AS. After the inclusion of the mediator (PL) to the model, the influence of the independent variable (LS) increased and the effect of LS on AS significantly decreased. In light of this, the relationship between LS and AS can be explained by the mediating role of the PL variable. The results indicate the importance of perceived loneliness in regard to one’s life satisfaction and antisocial behaviors. In light of this, interventions that focus on the social aspect could prove useful for the improvement of sustainable life satisfaction, therefore decreasing the chance of the emergence of AS.
Predicting anxiety, depression, and insomnia among Bangladeshi university students using tree‐based machine learning models
Background and Aims Mental health problem is a rising public health concern. People of all ages, specially Bangladeshi university students, are more affected by this burden. Thus, the objective of the study was to use tree‐based machine learning (ML) models to identify major risk factors and predict anxiety, depression, and insomnia in university students. Methods A social media‐based cross‐sectional survey was employed for data collection. We used Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD‐7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ‐9) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI‐7) scale for measuring students' anxiety, depression and insomnia problems. The tree‐based supervised decision tree (DT), random forest (RF) and robust eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) ML algorithms were used to build the prediction models and their predictive performance was evaluated using confusion matrix and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results Of the 1250 students surveyed, 64.7% were male and 35.3% were female. The students' ages ranged from 18 to 26 years old, with an average age of 22.24 years (SD = 1.30). Majority of the students (72.6%) were from rural areas and social media addicted (56.6%). Almost 83.3% of the students had moderate to severe anxiety, 84.7% had moderate to severe depression and 76.5% had moderate to severe insomnia problems. Students' social media addiction, age, academic performance, smoking status, monthly family income and morningness‐eveningness are the main risk factors of anxiety, depression and insomnia. The highest predictive performance was observed from the XGBoost model for anxiety, depression and insomnia. Conclusion The study findings offer valuable insights for stakeholders, families and policymakers enabling a more profound comprehension of the pressing mental health disorders. This understanding can guide the formulation of improved policy strategies, initiatives for mental health promotion, and the development of effective counseling services within university campus. Additionally, our proposed model might play a critical role in diagnosing and predicting mental health problems among Bangladeshi university students and similar settings.
Neural Network Applications in Polygraph Scoring—A Scoping Review
Polygraph tests have been used for many years as a means of detecting deception, but their accuracy has been the subject of much debate. In recent years, researchers have explored the use of neural networks in polygraph scoring to improve the accuracy of deception detection. The purpose of this scoping review is to offer a comprehensive overview of the existing research on the subject of neural network applications in scoring polygraph tests. A total of 57 relevant papers were identified and analyzed for this review. The papers were examined for their research focus, methodology, results, and conclusions. The scoping review found that neural networks have shown promise in improving the accuracy of polygraph tests, with some studies reporting significant improvements over traditional methods. However, further research is needed to validate these findings and to determine the most effective ways of integrating neural networks into polygraph testing. The scoping review concludes with a discussion of the current state of the field and suggestions for future research directions.
Entangled Autopoiesis: Reframing Psychotherapy and Neuroscience Through Cognitive Science and Systems Engineering
The increasing intersection of psychotherapy, cognitive science, neuroscience, and systems engineering beckons us to rethink what it means to talk the language of the human mind in the clinical setting. This position paper proposes the idea of entangled autopoiesis, a metatheoretical paradigm that addresses the mind and therapy not as linear processes but as self-organizing, adaptive processes enfolded across neural, cognitive, relational, and cultural domains. Psychotherapy, from this viewpoint, is less a corrective technique and more a zone of systemic integration, wherein resilience and meaning are co-created in the interaction of embodied brains, lived stories, and relational fields. Neuroscience informs us about plasticity and regulation; cognitive science emphasizes the embodied and extended nature of cognition; and systems engineering sheds light on feedback, emergence, and adaptive dynamics. Artificial intelligence appears as a double presence: as a metaphor for complexity and as a practical tool able to chart patterns below human sensibility. By adopting a complexity-aware epistemology, we advocate a relocation in clinical thinking—one recognizing the psyche as an autopoietic network, entangled with culture and technology and able to renew itself in therapeutic encounters. The implications for clinical methodology, therapist training, and future interdisciplinary research are discussed.
Predictors of Romanian Psychology Students’ Intention to Successfully Complete Their Courses—A Process-Based Psychology Theory Approach
Student retention is a frequently researched issue due to the incidence of student dropout and its significance to learning outcomes. However, there are research gaps that need to be addressed in understanding the factors influencing student dropout in the context of higher education in Romania. This cross-sectional investigation aims to fill these gaps by examining the relationships between satisfaction with the specialization, self-regulation of learning behavior, students’ perceived stress, perceived acceptance from family and friends, and the intention to complete studies. The study utilizes various statistical analysis techniques, including mediation analysis and correlation analysis, to analyze the collected data. An online questionnaire was administered to non-randomized students majoring in Psychology, and a total of 144 valid and consented responses were obtained. The results reveal significant influences of satisfaction with the specialization, self-regulated learning, and students’ perceived stress on the intention to successfully complete courses. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy was found to fully mediate the relationship between satisfaction with the specialization and academic adjustment. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the student dropout process in the Romanian higher education system. By identifying the factors associated with student retention, this study provides insights that can inform the development of interventions aimed at improving students’ retention and overall learning outcomes.
When Home Helps or Hurts: A Moderated Mediation Analysis of Work Meaning, Intrinsic Motivation, and Life Satisfaction Across Family Flexibility Profiles
The present study investigates the twofold effect of home–work spillover on life satisfaction through intrinsic work motivation and meaning derived from work, with family flexibility as a moderator. Based on Self-Determination Theory and the Work–Home Resources model, we test a moderated parallel mediation model whereby both positive and negative spillover from home affect life satisfaction through motivational and meaning pathways, depending on the level of family flexibility. 735 working adults completed validated measures of work-related flow, work meaning, home–work interaction (negative and positive), family flexibility, and life satisfaction. PROCESS macro (Model 59) via 5000 bootstrapped samples indicated that home negatively influencing work was associated with lower life satisfaction, mainly via reduced work meaning, particularly for individuals with low family flexibility. Conversely, positive work–home interaction was associated with higher work meaning and, indirectly, greater life satisfaction, with this effect being stronger when family flexibility was lower. Intrinsic motivation was associated with life satisfaction through mediation only when family flexibility was higher. These results indicate work meaning and family context compensatory and buffering effects on well-being. The research adds to integrative work–life interface models by delineating conditional psychological processes that enable employee flourishing.
A Network Analysis Approach toward Adaptive Overt Narcissism Network
The relationship between narcissistic personality and art and beauty appreciation has recently become the focus of research investigations. Adaptive narcissists raise their sense of worth in order to shield themselves from harm caused by others. Because they aspire to be more attractive, healthier, and successful versions of themselves, they frequently have greater success in life than the majority of people. Grandiose and overtly narcissistic behavior are the main recognized characteristics of an overt narcissist, which is currently regarded as a personality disorder that puts mental health and wellbeing at peril. On a random sample collection of data from 1101 respondents to an online questionnaire, we conducted a network analysis of the Adaptive Overt Narcissism Scale (AONS) items. In this study, we used a network analysis approach to examine the network structure of adaptive overt narcissism, as well as its relationships with psychological functioning. The present study utilized network analysis to investigate the centrality measures of items in the Adaptive Overt Narcissism Scale (AONS) and their interrelationships. Results indicated that item Q6.8 (“I appreciate art and beauty”) had low betweenness, closeness, and strength centrality measures, indicating that it was less influential in the network. However, it also had negative expected influence, suggesting that its absence would have a destabilizing effect on the network. These results highlight the importance of the appreciation of art and beauty in deactivating the adaptive overt narcissist network. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms underlying this relationship and its implications for narcissism prevention and intervention.
Does Culinary Nostalgia Shape Touristic Behaviour?
This study explores the influence of culinary nostalgia on tourist behaviour, offering a detailed analysis of how this psychological factor, combined with others, shapes tourists' preferences. The research employs quantitative methods, relying on network analysis applied to data collected from a sample of 535 participants. The results demonstrate that culinary nostalgia plays a significant role in triggering memories related to past food experiences and cultural heritage, directly influencing travel decisions. Additionally, the study highlights that the perception of service quality contributes to increasing tourist engagement in culinary tourism through a complex mechanism mediated by three factors: culinary attractor, culinary nostalgia, and culinary socialisation. These complex interactions between service quality and psychological factors influence tourist participation, offering new perspectives on how tourist destinations can leverage nostalgia and service quality to promote sustainable and cultural tourism. These results indicate that adopting a nostalgic-cultural strategy, together with offering top-notch services, can greatly improve tourist experiences and promote sustainability in culinary tourism. Therefore, this study enhances the existing body of knowledge by emphasising the need to include emotional aspects and improvement of service quality in strategies for developing tourism.
A Network Analysis-Driven Sequential Mediation Analysis of Students’ Perceived Classroom Comfort and Perceived Faculty Support on the Relationship between Teachers’ Cognitive Presence and Students’ Grit—A Holistic Learning Approach
The interaction between teachers and students is critical to the learning process. Student success and learner satisfaction have consistently improved in educational situations where instructors and students connect frequently and meaningfully. The Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, as well as the sense of belonging concept, have received a significant amount of attention from researchers investigating online learning since its debut. The current study focuses on the CoI framework in general, and in particular on studies on teaching, social, and cognitive presences in connection to students’ feeling of belonging and grit enhancement. This research investigated the opinion of 310 students at the Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad regarding their satisfaction with their teachers’ presences, their academic sense of belonging, and their grit. Our methodology followed an innovative approach. First, we employed a network analysis on all subscales’ mean scores, and then we performed a sequential mediation analysis based on both the network analysis results and the conclusions from the literature review. We tested whether students’ perceived classroom comfort and perceived faculty support sequentially mediated the relationship between teacher’s cognitive presence and students’ grit. According to the scientific literature, teacher’s cognitive presence consists of four fundamental categories: triggering events, exploration, integration, and resolution, which specifically the validation of knowledge by cooperation and reflection in a community of inquiry. We further tested if sense of belonging might mediate the relationship between teachers’ cognitive presence and students’ grit. The results show that students’ perceived classroom comfort and perceived faculty support partially and significantly sequentially mediate the relationship between teachers’ cognitive presence triggering events and students’ grit. The results are then further used to suggest possible recommendations for designing holistic learning environments in Romanian higher education institutions.
Synthetic Emotions and the Illusion of Measurement: A Conceptual Review and Critique of Measurement Paradigms in Affective Science
The scientific study of emotion remains fraught with conceptual ambiguity, methodological limitations, and epistemological blind spots. This theoretical paper argues that existing paradigms frequently capture synthetic rather than natural emotional states—those shaped by social expectations, cognitive scripting, and performance under observation. We propose a conceptual framework that distinguishes natural emotion—spontaneous, embodied, and interoceptively grounded—from synthetic forms that are adaptive, context-driven, and often unconsciously rehearsed. These reactions often involve emotional scripts rather than genuine, spontaneous affective experiences. Drawing on insights from affective neuroscience, psychological measurement, artificial intelligence, and neurodiversity, we examine how widely used tools such as EEG, polygraphy, and self-report instruments may capture emotional conformity rather than authenticity. We further explore how affective AI systems trained on socially filtered datasets risk replicating emotional performance rather than emotional truth. By recognizing neurodivergent expression as a potential site of emotional transparency, we challenge dominant models of emotional normalcy and propose a five-step agenda for reorienting emotion research toward authenticity, ecological validity, and inclusivity. This post-synthetic framework invites a redefinition of emotion that is conceptually rigorous, methodologically nuanced, and ethically inclusive of human affective diversity.
