The Nature of the Style galant: Evidence from the Repertoire

Observes that the term \"galant\" has historically and somewhat vaguely been applied to European classical music dating from the years ca. 1730-1780 as a stylistic designation. Attempts to formulate a more precise definition of \"style galant\" through an analysis of works by 18th-century composers which include some form of the term \"galant\" in their titles. Concludes that it can be most accurately applied to keyboard music written by composers active in the western half of present-day Germany active between 1735 and 1770, much of it intended for amateur players.
