Buckling of axially compressed joined lattice-core sandwich conical-cylindrical shells

The present paper investigates the buckling behavior of the sandwich-joined conical-cylindrical shells with geodesic lattice cores using analytical and numerical approaches. Using a smeared stiffener technique, the grid structure is transformed to an equivalent composite layer. To achieve the overall stiffness of the sandwich shell, the stiffness of the stiffeners should be superimposed by the stiffness of the shells. The governing equations are formulated based on the first shear deformation theory (FSDT). For extracting the buckling loads, the power series technique has been used. To corroborate the analytical results, a finite element model is provided. The comparisons indicate satisfactory agreement between the two approaches. Moreover, the effect of stiffeners and skin parameters are investigated. The results obtained are new and can be used for future studies.

Three-dimensional multi-field equations of a functionally graded piezoelectric thick shell with variable thickness, curvature and arbitrary nonhomogeneity

The present research develops a three-dimensional multi-field formulation of a functionally graded piezoelectric thick shell of revolution by using tensor analysis. An orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system was employed, and basic geometric equations were derived for an arbitrary thick shell of revolution with variable thickness and curvature. Mechanical and electrical properties were assumed to vary along a three-dimensional orthogonal coordinate system with arbitrary functional distribution. The functional of the introduced shell was derived by using kinetic and potential energy of the structure based on three orthogonal displacement components, electric potential and material properties. The final differential equations were derived in general state for every arbitrary structure and material property distributions. The obtained equations were reduced for functionally graded and functionally graded piezoelectric cylindrical shells and the mentioned reduced equations were verified by comparison with the literature. Trueness and generality of the present results can be justified by capability of these equations for different geometries and material properties.

A unified analytical approach is applied for investigating the vibrational behavior of grid-stiffened composite cylindrical shells considering the flexural behavior of the ribs. A smeared method is employed to superimpose the stiffness contribution of the stiffeners with those of the shell in order to obtain the equivalent stiffness parameters of the whole panel. The stiffeners are modeled as a beam and considered to support shear loads and bending moments in addition to the axial loads. Therefore, the corresponding stiffness terms are taken into consideration while obtaining the stiffness matrices due to the stiffeners. Theoretical formulations are based on first-order shear deformation shell theory, which includes the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotary inertia. The modal forms are assumed to have the axial dependency in the form of Fourier series whose derivatives are legitimized using Stokes’ transformation. In order to validate the obtained results, a 3-D finite element model is also built using ABAQUS CAE software. Results obtained from two types of analyses are compared with each other, and good agreement has been achieved. Furthermore, the influence of variations in the shell thickness and changes of the boundary conditions on the shell frequencies is studied. The results obtained are novel and can be used as a benchmark for further studies.

An Exact Analytical Solution to Exponentially Tapered Piezoelectric Energy Harvester

It has been proven that tapering the piezoelectric beam through its length optimizes the power extracted from vibration based energy harvesting. This phenomenon has been investigated by some researchers using semianalytical, finite element and experimental methods. In this paper, an exact analytical solution is presented to calculate the power generated from vibration of exponentially tapered unimorph and bimorph with series and parallel connections. The mass normalized mode shapes of the exponentially tapered piezoelectric beam with tip mass are implemented to transfer the proposed electromechanical coupled equations into modal coordinates. The steady states harmonic solution results are verified both numerically and experimentally. Results show that there exist values for tapering parameter and electric resistance in a way that the output power per mass of the energy harvester will be maximized. Moreover it is concluded that the electric resistance must be higher than a specified value for gaining more power by tapering the beam.

Summary Mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) is an indicator of sperm quality and its evaluation complements the standard semen analysis. The fluorescent dye JC‐1 has been widely used to assess sperm ΔΨm; however, some problems have been detected under certain experimental conditions. Another fluorescent compound, tetramethylrhodamine methyl ester perchlorate (TMRM), has been used in somatic cells and bovine spermatozoa but not in human spermatozoa. TMRM accumulates in hyperpolarised mitochondria and the fluorescence intensity of this compound correlates with ΔΨm. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate and validate the usefulness of the fluorescent dye TMRM for measuring sperm ΔΨm. The results showed that TMRM accurately detects sperm populations displaying either high or low ΔΨm. Moreover, TMRM was able to measure sperm ΔΨm under the experimental conditions in which JC‐1 had previously presented difficulties. Differences in ΔΨm according to sperm and semen quality were properly detected and a positive correlation between ΔΨm and conventional semen parameters was observed. Finally, a positive correlation was found between the ΔΨm measurement by TMRM and by the widely used JC‐1. In conclusion, TMRM is a simple, time‐effective method, easy to set in laboratories equipped with flow cytometry technology, and can accurately detect changes in ΔΨm with efficiency comparable to JC‐1 without its limitations.

Recently application of functionally graded materials(FGMs) have attracted a great deal of interest. These materials are composed of various materials with different micro-structures which can vary spatially in FGMs. Such composites with varying thickness and non-uniform pressure can be used in the aerospace engineering. Therefore, analysis of such composite is of high importance in engineering problems. Thermoelastic analysis of functionally graded cylinder with variable thickness under non-uniform pressure is considered. First order shear deformation theory and total potential energy approach is applied to obtain the governing equations of non-homogeneous cylinder. Considering the inner and outer solutions, perturbation series are applied to solve the governing equations. Outer solution for out of boundaries and more sensitive variable in inner solution at the boundaries are considered. Combining of inner and outer solution for near and far points from boundaries leads to high accurate displacement field distribution. The main aim of this paper is to show the capability of matched asymptotic solution for different non-homogeneous cylinders with different shapes and different non-uniform pressures. The results can be used to design the optimum thickness of the cylinder and also some properties such as high temperature residence by applying non-homogeneous material.

Free Vibration Analysis of Fiber Metal Laminate Annular Plate by State-Space Based Differential Quadrature Method

A three-dimensional elasticity theory by means of a state-space based differential quadrature method is presented for free vibration analysis of fiber metal laminate annular plate. The kinds of composite material and metal layers are considered to be S2-glass and aluminum, respectively. A semianalytical approach which uses state-space in the thickness and differential quadrature in the radial direction is implemented for evaluating the nondimensional natural frequencies of the annular plates. The influences of changes in boundary condition, plate thickness, and lay-up direction on the natural frequencies are studied. A comparison is also made with the numerical results reported by ABAQUS software which shows an excellent agreement.

Quality of human spermatozoa: relationship between high-magnification sperm morphology and DNA integrity

Summary The aim of this work is to establish the relationship between the morphology of Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI)‐selected spermatozoa and their DNA integrity. The 45 ejaculates were randomly distributed into three treatment groups: normozoospermic, oligoasthenozoospermic and oligoasthenotheratozoospermic samples. The evaluation of DNA integrity was performed using the sperm chromatin dispersion test. It was established that DNA integrity of spermatozoa is strongly dependent on ejaculate quality (P < 0.05). The count of spermatozoa with nonfragmented DNA in normozoospermic samples was high and independent from IMSI‐morphological classes (Class 1 versus Class 3, respectively) (P > 0.1). With decreased ejaculate quality, the percentage of spermatozoa with nonfragmented DNA decreased significantly (P < 0.05) independent from morphological class. Nevertheless, the rate of IMSI‐selected spermatozoa with fragmented DNA within of Class 1 in normozoospermic (Group 1), in oligoasthenozoospermic (Group 2) and in oligoasthenotheratozoospermic (Group 3) samples was 21.1%, 31.8% and 54.1%, respectively. In conclusion, there is a direct relationship between morphological parameters of spermatozoa and their DNA integrity. However, the IMSI technique alone is not enough for the selection of spermatozoa with intact nuclei.

The modal forms are assumed to have the axial dependency in the form of Fourier series whose derivatives are legitimized using Stoke's transformation. A 3D finite element model is also built using ABAQUS software which takes into consideration the exact geometric configuration of the stiffeners and the shell. The achievements from the two types of analyses are compared with each other and good agreement has been obtained. The Influences of variations in shell geometrical parameters, boundary condition, and changes in the cross stiffeners angle on the natural frequencies are studied. The results obtained are novel and can be used as a benchmark for further studies. The simplicity and the capability of the present method are also discussed.

New molecular techniques focused on genome analysis, open new possibilities for more accurate evaluation of economiclly important traits in farm animals. Milk production traits are typical quantitative characteristics controlled by a number of genes. Mutations in their sequences may alter animal performance as well as their breeding values. In this study, we investigated the effect of Kpn2I restriction fragment length polymorphisms in the leptin gene, on bull breeding values for milk yield, fat, and protein yield, and their percentage. In order to test for an association between the leptin single-nucleotide polymorphism in exon 2 and milk productivity, we genotyped 134 Iranian Holstein bulls. Breeding values for milk-related traits (milk yield, fat, and protein yield and percentage) were estimated using the BLUP based on an animal model. The effect of the genotypes of Kpn2I polymorphism on the breeding values for milk-related traits was examined using least square methods. The T allele frequency was 0.425. Genotypes were distributed according to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Bulls with TT genotype had higher milk, fat and protein yield compared with TC and CC bulls (P < 0.05). Bulls with CC genotype had higher protein percentage compared with TT and TC bulls (P < 0.05). The association between leptin polymorphism with milk production traits suggests that this marker may be useful for selection based on molecular information.
