The Impact of Leadership Styles of Mid-Level Supervisors on Job Satisfaction of Correction Officers
Correctional supervisors have the demanding task of leading correctional officers in a sometimes-hostile work environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the Mid-level Supervisor Leadership Style and Correctional Officer Job Satisfaction. The Mid-level Supervisor Leadership Style in corrections is still developing. Mid-level Supervisors are assuming more leadership responsibilities in addition to their traditional duties. Correctional Officer Job Satisfaction is important because it ensures correctional officers' stability to promote and maintain a safe work environment inside the prison for all inmates and staff. The study utilized Kouzes and Posner's Leadership Practice Inventory Observer and The Bowling Green Job Satisfaction. The study applied Kouzes and Posner's five leadership practices, which are the following: “Challenging the Process,” “Enabling Others to Act,” “Encouraging the Heart,” “Modeling the Way,” and “Inspiring a Shared Vision.” A convenience sampling technique was utilized due to the distance between other institutions to identify the study participants. The sample population was from one approved prison within the Alabama Department of Correction. The study was conducted utilizing a linear regression analysis and Pearson Product-Moment. There were no significant differences found among the five leadership practices. An analysis of the research questions revealed that the null hypothesis could not be rejected for any of the research questions presented.
