MURROW DISDAINED SAFE ROAD IN DRIVE TO SET HIGH STANDARDS
When Edward R. Murrow died in 1965, Eric Sevareid said of him, \"He was an original, a shooting star. We shall not see his like again.\" Amen. The longer we go the more we know Sevareid was right, as usual. Even less today then when Sevareid wrote that, no one at any television network believes there will ever be another Ed Murrow. Here is Murrow playing the dandy and painting the town, holding a scoop in one hand and a blond in the other (sometimes Marlene Dietrich), with a bottle of the best scotch for fuel. There he is, not defying the State Department when masters of the ruin-reputations-by-sme ar movement demanded he sign a loyalty oath in exchange for a new passport. Stunning, isn't it? Ed Murrow, All-American legend and justified folk hero, couldn't get a passport in 1955 until and unless he signed a loyalty oath. Even more stunning is the fact that he signed it. He folded without a fight.
