Social Media and Maladaptive Friendship Processes During COVID-19: Examining Unique Psychosocial Vulnerabilities
The current study sought to examine the various psychosocial vulnerabilities to depressive symptoms experienced by older adolescents with a particular focus on maladaptive interpersonal processes, social media use, and exposure to COVID-19-related stressors. Participants (N=471 undergraduate students) completed self-report measures examining interpersonal behaviors, quality and quantity of time spent on social media, exposure to COVID19-related stressors, and depressive symptoms. A subset of participants (n=304) were iPhone users with the Screen Time application tracking their social media use on their phone. These participants specifically reported time spent on social media on their phones, which was used to examine hypotheses specific to time spent on social media.Numerous findings reported in the previous literature regarding the relationship of friendship processes and depression as well as the relationship among maladaptive social media behaviors were replicated in the present study. In addition, there were several novel findings, including time spent on social media strengthening the relationship between high levels of excessive reassurance seeking and depressive symptoms as well as strengthening the relationship between being a woman and depressive symptoms. Additionally, there were novel findings about COVID-19 social stressors, along with excessive reassurance seeking, as well as these stressors and social media addiction predicting depressive symptoms. These results suggest that COVID19 may have led to new vulnerabilities to depressive symptoms for adolescents. The current study sheds light on the additional psychosocial vulnerabilities experienced by current older adolescents that may be increasing risk for depression.

The Man-Midwife's Tale: Medical Professionalism and Masculinity in Eighteenth-Century British Midwifery
This dissertation analyzes the practice of man-midwifery (early obstetrics) in eighteenth-century Britain, locating it in the context of both the developing medical profession and the coexistence of plural masculinities over the “long eighteenth century.” By emphasizing the internal divisions among the groups of men who practiced medicine and midwifery, it demonstrates that what historians frequently term the “rise of man-midwifery” was an intrinsically complex and nonlinear process, fraught with tension and conflict. Examining the man-midwife or accoucheur as a unique figure in the context of the socially and culturally turbulent eighteenth century problematizes traditional views of him as a scion of enlightenment or the personification of the new “masculine” science. In reality, the professionalization of midwifery was influenced by several developments that depended as much upon cultural context as it did on developments in science and medicine. Placing the man-midwife in this context adds nuance not only to the history of medical professionalization, but illustrates the complexities inherent in embodying and performing multiple codes of eighteenth-century masculinity. This dissertation argues that competition and intraprofessional disputes between male practitioners, rather than overt competition with female midwives, posed the greatest challenge to the slow professionalization of obstetrics. Rather than seeking to displace female midwives’ traditional roles in British birthing rooms, the primary aim of professionalization was to succeed in the increasingly male-dominated world of eighteenth-century medicine.

Humans, bow down
The Great War is over. The Robots have won.
