Use of AbobotulinumtoxinA for Cosmetic Treatments in the Neck, and Middle and Lower Areas of the Face: A Systematic Review
AbobotulinumtoxinA (aboBoNT-A) has been used for various cosmetic purposes, including minimization of moderate to severe lines, or other cosmetic indications, in the face and neck. We carried out a systematic review to identify all relevant evidence on the treatment approaches and outcomes of aboBoNT-A as a cosmetic treatment of the middle and lower areas of the face, and the neck. Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, congress proceedings and review bibliographies were searched for relevant studies. Identified articles were screened against pre-specified eligibility criteria. Of 560 unique articles identified, 10 were included for data extraction (three observational studies, 1 randomized controlled trial [with two articles] and five non-randomized trials). The articles provided data on gummy/asymmetric smile (2), marionette lines (5), masseter muscle volume (2), nasal wrinkles (2), perioral wrinkles (3) and the platysma muscle (4). All articles reporting on efficacy of aboBoNT-A demonstrated positive results, including reduction of wrinkles (5), reduction of masseter muscle (2) and degree of gummy smile (1) compared with before treatment. No serious adverse events were reported and patient satisfaction was high. In conclusion, positive findings support further research of aboBoNT-A for the middle and lower areas of the face, and in the neck, which are largely unapproved indications.
Evaluation of the Performance and Safety of a New Micro‐Needle Technology in Comparison With the Classic Needle on the Antiaging Effects of a Biorevitalizing Solution: A Randomized Split Face/Neck Study
Background Skin biorevitalization involves multiple intradermal injections to enhance skin quality, but precise dermal targeting can be challenging due to variations in skin thickness smaller, less painful needles with fewer skin reactions are attractive options. Aims This study evaluates a new Micro‐Needle device's performance and safety in comparison with the classic needle used in skin biorevitalization. Patients/Methods Subjects with facial and neck skin aging were enrolled. Safety outcomes, including immediate and local tolerability, were assessed. Performance outcomes measured skin radiance, wrinkles and photoaging grade, hydration, subepidermal low echogenic band, dermis thickness, and skin elasticity. Both subjects and investigators recorded Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale scores. Results Micro‐Needle injections demonstrated superior performance compared to the classic needle, influenced by the specific skin zones and thickness. Micro‐Needle was superior for skin wrinkles at D49 for periorbital zone and nasolabial folds by −14.5% (p = 0.01) and −15% (p = 0.004), respectively, and for neck by 9.6% (p = 0.0008). The Nanosoft device showed a faster improvement for skin hydration at D42 for the cheek zone (p = 0.04) and at D75 for the neck area (p = 0.01); and for skin radiance at D75 (p = 0.03) and at D120 (p = 0.0098). Ex vivo studies confirmed the Micro‐Needle's accuracy in product placement in the dermis. Adverse events were milder with Micro‐Needle and no serious adverse events occurred. Conclusions Both needles significantly improved skin quality, but Micro‐Needle enhanced the outcomes of skin biorevitalization procedures, particularly in terms of skin wrinkle reduction, elasticity, and overall skin hydration.
Minimally invasive procedures for nasal aesthetics
Nose has an important role in the aesthetics of face. It is easy to understand the reason of the major interest that has revolved around the correction of its imperfections for several centuries, or even from the ancient times. In the last decade, all the surgical or medical minimal-invasive techniques evolved exponentially. The techniques of rejuvenation and corrections of nasal imperfections did not escape this development that is much widespread in the medicine of the third millennium. In many cases, the techniques of surgical correction involve invasive procedure that necessitates, for the majority of cases, hospitalisation. The author, using a different approach, has developed mini-invasive techniques using botulinum toxin A (BTxA) and absorbable fillers for the correction of nasal imperfections. BTxA allows to reduce the imperfections due to hypertension of muscles, while the absorbable fillers allow to correct all the imperfections of the nasal profile from the root to the tip in total safety. The correction is based on the precise rules that allow avoiding the majority of side effects. Results are long lasting and well appreciated by patients.
UV-C irradiation is highly effective in inactivating SARS-CoV-2 replication
The potential virucidal effects of UV-C irradiation on SARS-CoV-2 were experimentally evaluated for different illumination doses and virus concentrations (1000, 5, 0.05 MOI). At a virus density comparable to that observed in SARS-CoV-2 infection, an UV-C dose of just 3.7 mJ/cm 2 was sufficient to achieve a more than 3-log inactivation without any sign of viral replication. Moreover, a complete inactivation at all viral concentrations was observed with 16.9 mJ/cm 2 . These results could explain the epidemiological trends of COVID-19 and are important for the development of novel sterilizing methods to contain SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Preliminary Evaluation of New Wearable Sensors to Study Incongruous Postures Held by Employees in Viticulture
Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) stand as a prominent cause of injuries in modern agriculture. Scientific research has highlighted a causal link between MSDs and awkward working postures. Several methods for the evaluation of working postures, and related risks, have been developed such as the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA). Nevertheless, these methods are generally applied with manual measurements on pictures or videos. As a consequence, their applicability could be scarce, and their effectiveness could be limited. The use of wearable sensors to collect kinetic data could facilitate the use of these methods for risk assessment. Nevertheless, the existing system may not be usable in the agricultural and vine sectors because of its cost, robustness and versatility to the various anthropometric characteristics of workers. The aim of this study was to develop a technology capable of collecting accurate data about uncomfortable postures and repetitive movements typical of vine workers. Specific objectives of the project were the development of a low-cost, robust, and wearable device, which could measure data about wrist angles and workers’ hand positions during possible viticultural operations. Furthermore, the project was meant to test its use to evaluate incongruous postures and repetitive movements of workers’ hand positions during pruning operations in vineyard. The developed sensor had 3-axis accelerometers and a gyroscope, and it could monitor the positions of the hand–wrist–forearm musculoskeletal system when moving. When such a sensor was applied to the study of a real case, such as the pruning of a vines, it permitted the evaluation of a simulated sequence of pruning and the quantification of the levels of risk induced by this type of agricultural activity.
Applying Spectroscopies, Imaging Analyses, and Other Non-Destructive Techniques to Olives and Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A Systematic Review of Current Knowledge and Future Applications
Given its huge economic, nutritional, and social value, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is an essential food. This flagship product of the countries bordering the Mediterranean basin is one of the most frauded products worldwide. Although traditional chemical analyses have demonstrated to be reliable tools for olive drupes and EVOO quality assessment, they present several drawbacks; the urgent need for fast and non-destructive techniques thus motivated this review. Given the lack of comprehensive reviews in the literature, our first aim was to summarize the current knowledge regarding applying spectroscopies, imaging analyses, and other non-destructive techniques to olives and EVOO. The second aim was to highlight the most innovative and futuristic applications and outline the future research prospects within this strategic production chain. With respect to olive drupes, the most interesting results were obtained using RGB imaging and NIR spectroscopy, particularly using portable NIR devices and specific digital cameras for in-field or in-mill monitoring. Nevertheless, it is important to highlight that RGB imaging and NIR spectroscopy need to be integrated with flesh hardness measurements, given the higher reliability of this parameter compared to olive skin color. Finally, with respect to EVOO, although several useful applications of visible imagining, UV–Visible, NIR, and Mid-Infrared spectroscopies have been found, the online monitoring of EVOO quality using NIR spectroscopy strikes us as being the most interesting technique for improving the EVOO production chain in the near future.
Conceptual design of an off-momentum collimation system in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron for High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider proton beams
The CERN accelerator complex is undergoing an upgrade in order to meet the requirements of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). One of the key needs is to increase the intensity of beams injected into the LHC from the current1.15×1011to2.3×1011p+/bunch. This requires a beam intensity at injection in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), the last injector before the LHC, as high as2.6×1011p+/bunch, given that a budget for losses of about 10% is included in the design. However, previous experience with high intensity beams suggests that the total amount of losses in the SPS can be even higher, causing an increased activation, faster aging, and consequent early failure of machine equipment, in addition to an increase in the requirements for preinjectors in order to still meet the HL-LHC target in spite of higher losses. In this paper, we propose a collimation system to be used with HL-LHC proton beams in the SPS in order to intercept and safely dispose of beam losses in ad hoc locations and therefore provide the machine with protection against activation and equipment aging. The design is based on a two-stage concept, where the primary stage intercepts particles that otherwise would be lost, and the secondary stage employing an absorber where lost particles are finally disposed of. Numerical simulations prove a cleaning efficiency of the proposed system of at least 80%, substantially reducing the spreading of particle losses around the machine. Furthermore, the performance of the collimation system has a low sensitivity to common machine errors, and the design is cost efficient, with minimal hardware changes.
Morpho-Phenological, Chemical, and Genetic Characterization of Italian Maize Landraces from the Lazio Region
In the framework of a Collaboration Agreement between CREA and ARSIAL, a morpho-phenological, chemical, and genetic characterization of maize populations native to the Lazio region was carried out. During 2022 and 2023, a set of 50 accessions, belonging both to ARSIAL and CREA maize collections, were multiplied in Bergamo. Morpho-phenological descriptors were recorded in the field: plant height, ear height, and male and female flowering time. The grain chemical composition in terms of protein, lipid, starch, ash and fiber was evaluated by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). A double-digest restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) strategy was used to genotype the landraces. The two collections were not significantly different in terms of grain chemical composition. On the other hand, the ARSIAL and CREA germplasm showed a different distribution in the three cluster-based population structure obtained by ddRADseq, which largely corresponded to the distribution map of their collection sites. The materials from the Lazio region maintained by ARSIAL and CREA were revealed to be different. The comparison between the two groups of landraces showed the importance of characterizing germplasm collections to promote the recovery and valorization of local biodiversity.
Evaluation of ear rot (Fusarium verticillioides) resistance and fumonisin accumulation in Italian maize inbred lines
Mycotoxin contamination of maize (Zea mays L.) grain is a global threat to the safety of both human food and animal feed. Hence, the development of maize genotypes with reduced mycotoxin accumulation in grain is of major importance. In order to find maize germplasm sources of resistance to Fusarium ear rot, 34 Italian and six public inbred lines were evaluated by means of artificial inoculation in field experiments during 2009 and 2010. Relationships between ear rot and fumonisin concentration in the ears were investigated. Primary ears were challenged with a mixture of two Fusarium verticillioides isolates from Northern Italy, through kernel inoculation, and ear rot severity was assessed. The average number of visibly infected kernels per ear, after inoculation, ranged from 2 to 68 in 2009 and from 0 to 120 in 2010. Fumonisin concentrations in the inoculated ears were greater than in the experimental controls for both years. Variability was found between the inbred lines: fumonisin accumulation ranged from 0.56 to 240.83 mg kg⁻¹ in 2009 and from 1.09 to 190.60 mg kg⁻¹ in 2010. In both years, six inbred lines showed high fumonisin content (≥100 mg kg⁻¹), while the other genotypes were almost equally split into two groups, low (≤10 mg kg⁻¹) and medium (from 11 to 100 mg kg⁻¹) fumonisin content. The number of infected kernels after artificial inoculation correlated with fumonisin concentration both in 2009 (r = 0.94; P≤ 0. 01) and 2010 (r = 0.67; P<0.01). Additionally, the percentage of internally infected kernels correlated positively with fumonisin concentration (r = 0.37; P≤ D. 01) and with the number of infected kernels (r = 0.29; P≤0.05). This research has demonstrated that Italian maize germplasm is a valid source of resistance to Fusarium ear rot. Furthermore, there is a strong association of visible Fusarium symptoms with fumonisin concentration, suggesting that selection in maize for reduced visible moulds should reduce the risk of mycotoxin contamination.
Risk and resilience factors for specific and general psychopathology worsening in people with Eating Disorders during COVID-19 pandemic: a retrospective Italian multicentre study
Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions had negative impact on the psychopathology of people with Eating Disorders (EDs). Factors involved in the vulnerability to stressful events have been under-investigated in this population. We aimed to assess which factors contributed to COVID-19-induced worsening in both general and specific psychopathology. Methods Three-hundred and twelve people with a clinically defined diagnosis of an ED and undergoing a specialist ED treatment in different Italian ED services before the spreading of COVID-19 pandemic filled in an online survey. ED specific and general psychopathology changes after COVID-19 quarantine were retrospectively evaluated. Factors related to COVID-19 concerns (financial condition, fear of contagion, perceived social isolation/support, satisfaction in peer, family or sentimental relationships), illness duration and treatment-related variables (type of treatment provided, type of access to care, satisfaction with therapeutic relationships) were included as predicting factors in a structural equational model, which included latent variables consisting of general and ED psychopathology items as outcomes. Results A perceived low quality of therapeutic relationships, fear of contagion and increased isolation were positively associated with psychopathology worsening. Reduced satisfaction with family and with friends’ relationships and reduced perceived social support were associated with ED and general symptoms deterioration, respectively. No significant effect emerged for intimate relationships, illness duration, economic condition and type of treatment. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of clinical variables associated with psychopathological changes during the COVID-19 lockdown period highlighting potential risk and resilience factors and, possibly, informing treatment as well as prevention strategies for EDs.
