2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid: An Intriguing Precursor for Monomer and Polymer Synthesis
2022
The most versatile furanic building block for chemical and polymer applications is 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid. However, the classical 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid production methodology has been found to have significant drawbacks that hinder industrial-scale production. This review highlights new alternative methods to synthesize 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid that are both more advantageous and attractive than conventional oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. This review also focuses on the use of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid as a polymer precursor and the various potential applications that arise from these furan-based materials.

On the Limits of \Playing Crazy\: Madness and Motherhood in Toni Morrison's Beloved
This essay contributes to scholarship on twentieth-century African American literature which thematizes Black women's madness. In interrogating antebellum Black madness as at once threatening and emancipatory, I undermine marginalization of the \"mad Black woman\" and the associated occlusions she represents, necessarily expanding the interpretive frameworks by which we most commonly account for Black women's political consciousness. One such mode of consciousness—\"playing crazy\"—entails a bevy of activities and behaviors discharged by historically disempowered groups to alter, even if temporarily, existing terms of intra-racial and interracial belonging. Analyzing Toni Morrison's neo-slave narrative Beloved (1988) as a site of departure from representations of \"playing crazy\" in contemporary African American vernacular traditions, drama, short and long fiction, I draw attention to contexts and consequences of gendered performances of \"affliction.\" In Morrison's hands, the persona of the \"mad Black woman\" contributes to a unique legacy of Black struggle and Black being.

Interstitial lung abnormalities in a large clinical lung cancer screening cohort: association with mortality and ILD diagnosis
2023
Background
Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) are CT findings suggestive of interstitial lung disease in individuals without a prior diagnosis or suspicion of ILD. Previous studies have demonstrated that ILA are associated with clinically significant outcomes including mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of ILA in a large CT lung cancer screening program and the association with clinically significant outcomes including mortality, hospitalizations, cancer and ILD diagnosis.
Methods
This was a retrospective study of individuals enrolled in a CT lung cancer screening program from 2012 to 2014. Baseline and longitudinal CT scans were scored for ILA per Fleischner Society guidelines. The primary analyses examined the association between baseline ILA and mortality, all-cause hospitalization, and incidence of lung cancer. Kaplan–Meier plots were generated to visualize the associations between ILA and lung cancer and all-cause mortality. Cox regression proportional hazards models were used to test for this association in both univariate and multivariable models.
Results
1699 subjects met inclusion criteria. 41 (2.4%) had ILA and 101 (5.9%) had indeterminate ILA on baseline CTs. ILD was diagnosed in 10 (24.4%) of 41 with ILA on baseline CT with a mean time from baseline CT to diagnosis of 4.47 ± 2.72 years. On multivariable modeling, the presence of ILA remained a significant predictor of death, HR 3.87 (2.07, 7.21; p < 0.001) when adjusted for age, sex, BMI, pack years and active smoking, but not of lung cancer and all-cause hospital admission. Approximately 50% with baseline ILA had progression on the longitudinal scan.
Conclusions
ILA identified on baseline lung cancer screening exams are associated with all-cause mortality. In addition, a significant proportion of patients with ILA are subsequently diagnosed with ILD and have CT progression on longitudinal scans.

Heterodera schachtii, a plant-parasitic cyst nematode, invades host roots and induces a specific syncytial feeding structure, from which it withdraws all required nutrients, causing severe yield losses. The system H. schachtii–Arabidopsis is an excellent research model for investigating plant defence mechanisms. Such responses are suppressed in well-established syncytia, whereas they are induced during early parasitism. However, the mechanisms by which the defence responses are modulated and the role of phytohormones are largely unknown.
The aim of this study was to elucidate the role of hormone-based defence responses at the onset of nematode infection. First, concentrations of main phytohormones were quantified and the expression of several hormone-related genes was analysed using quantitative real-time (qRT)-PCR or GeneChip. Further, the effects of individual hormones were evaluated via nematode attraction and infection assays using plants with altered endogenous hormone concentrations.
Our results suggest a pivotal and positive role for ethylene during nematode attraction, whereas jasmonic acid triggers early defence responses against H. schachtii. Salicylic acid seems to be a negative regulator during later syncytium and female development.
We conclude that nematodes are able to impose specific changes in hormone pools, thus modulating hormone-based defence and signal transduction in strict dependence on their parasitism stage.

The long-term success of an orthopedic implant largely depends on the extent of its osseointegration in the surrounding bone. During recent decades, there have been several attempts to develop porous structures and coatings in order to maximize the bone ingrowth on prosthesis surfaces. Innovative additive manufacturing technologies, such as electron beam melting (EBM), which are based upon building components by adding layers of material rather than by removing material from a raw shape, can provide a breakthrough solution, both to overcome the major limitations of the actual technologies and to significantly enhance the performance of porous scaffolds. This article reviews the latest developments in EBM technology applied to the preparation of highly biocompatible porous materials such as Trabecular Titanium and the production of orthopedic prostheses with enhanced characteristics.

Precipitation (Meteorology)
2020
This study aims to provide improved knowledge and evidence on current (1986–2015) climate variation based on six rainfall indices over five West African countries (Senegal, Niger, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, and Benin) using the Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS) dataset. On average, precipitation has increased over the central Sahel and the western Sahel. This increase is associated with increase in the number of rainy days, longer wet spells and shorter dry spells. Over the Guinea Coast, the slight increase in precipitation is associated with an increase in the intensity of rainfall with a shorter duration of wet spells. However, these mean changes in precipitation are not all statistically significant and uniform within a country. While previous studies are focused on regional and sub-regional scales, this study contributes to deliver a climate information at a country level that is more relevant for decision making and for policy makers, and to document climate-related risks within a country to feed impact studies in key sectors of the development, such as agriculture and water resources.

\"Offers fresh insights into nineteenth-century black women's cultural production. Compelling and elegantly crafted.\"--Kathy L. Glass, author ofCourting Communities: Black Female Nationalism and \"Syncre-Nationalism\" in the Nineteenth-Century North \"Outstanding in explaining why these figures were important leaders in their own time and are important models today. A truly engaging and significant study.\"-John Ernest, editor ofDouglass in His Own Time
Resistance Reimagined highlights unconventional modes of black women's activism within a society that has spoken so much of freedom but has granted it so selectively. Regis Fox terms this gap between democratic promise and dispossession the \"liberal problematic,\" and in this book she shows how black women have disrupted it as a form of resistance. Looking closely at nineteenth- and twentieth-century writings by African American women that reimagine antebellum America, Fox introduces types of black activism that differ from common associations with militancy and maleness. In doing so, she confronts expectations about what African American literature can and should be.
Fox analyzes Harriet Wilson's Our Nig, Elizabeth Keckly'sBehind the Scenes, Anna Julia Cooper's A Voice From the South, and Sherley Anne Williams's Dessa Rose. Too often, she argues, writers like these have been overshadowed by figures such as Sojourner Truth or Ida B. Wells, whose more tangible social defiance fits standard models of what resistance looks like. The thinkers highlighted by Fox have been dismissed as elitist, accommodationist, or complicit--yet Fox reveals that in reality, they critique the progressive ideology that underlies the liberal problematic. They are astutely attuned to the areas of American society not reached by notions of liberalism and progress. As a result, the world they portray is one of philosophical contradictions, legal paradoxes, and incoherent social practices that support white supremacy. Fox shows how these women use their writing to protest antiblack violence, reject superficial reform, call for major sociopolitical change, and challenge the false promises of American democracy.

Several research that assesses, or assess computer systems has been undertaken in previous decades. Choosing an appropriate DBMS system in a computer application, though, was never completely arbitrary, based on the professional study. Developing a viable answer for such a challenge depending on business goals and needs from judgment necessitates a thorough study on information access as well as comprehensive professional evaluation. The research presents a DSS to help non-kinetics discover their proper DBMS solutions and otherwise information retention types faster. This suggested DSS is unique in that it uses MoSCoW to evaluate criterion weighting or deliberate, as well as assessment frameworks for quantifying overall levels of quasi criterion and ISO/IEC qualitative features to show the link between criterion based upon industry specialists’ expertise. Companies that produce programs have difficulty integrating new innovations, such as Internet computing or information management platforms, into their operations. Because computer engineers and top programmers are usually specialists in their field, users need to consult or train other professionals. Therefore, computer development is an appropriate area for implementing judgment support technologies that can proactively help this prediction to choose the best technologies for their products. We offer a decision support system (DSS) to assist in the selection of the best appropriate information architecture. According to both example reports and specialists, this technique improves visibility into the choice method gives a deeper prioritized choice range than if customers have conducted their study individually, or saves the duration and expense of the judicial procedure.
