Neutrophil extracellular traps in fungal infections: A seesaw battle in hosts
Fungal infections are a growing health care challenge. Neutrophils play a key role in defense against fungal infections. There are many effective ways for neutrophils to eliminate fungal invaders, such as phagocytosis, oxidative bursts, and the formation of extracellular traps. This process has received considerable attention and has made rapid progress since neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation was described. Here, we describe the formation, induction, and function of NETs, as well as fungal strategies against NETs hunting. We highlight the effects of NETs on common fungal pathogens and how these pathogens survive.

A Magneto-Electric Device for Fluid Pipelines with Vibration Damping and Vibration Energy Harvesting
This study introduces an innovative energy harvesting system designed for industrial applications such as fluid pipelines, air conditioning ducts, sewer systems, and subsea oil pipelines. The system integrates magneto-electric flow coupling and utilizes a dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) to mitigate the vibrations induced by fluid flow while simultaneously harvesting energy through magnetic dipole–dipole interactions in a vibration energy harvester (VEH). The theoretical models, based on Hamilton’s Principle and the Biot–Savart Law, were validated through comprehensive experiments. The results indicate the superior performance of the small-magnet system over the large-magnet system in both damping and power generation. The study analyzed the frequency response and energy conversion efficiency across different parameters, including the DVA mass, spring constant, and placement location. The experimental findings demonstrated significant vibration reduction and increased voltage output, validating the theoretical model. This research offers new avenues for energy harvesting systems in pipeline infrastructures, potentially enhancing energy efficiency and structural integrity.
Coordination polymer structure and revisited hydrogen evolution catalytic mechanism for amorphous molybdenum sulfide
Molybdenum sulfides are very attractive noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water. The atomic structure and identity of the catalytically active sites have been well established for crystalline molybdenum disulfide ( c -MoS 2 ) but not for amorphous molybdenum sulfide ( a -MoS x ), which exhibits significantly higher HER activity compared to its crystalline counterpart. Here we show that HER-active a -MoS x , prepared either as nanoparticles or as films, is a molecular-based coordination polymer consisting of discrete [Mo 3 S 13 ] 2− building blocks. Of the three terminal disulfide (S 2 2− ) ligands within these clusters, two are shared to form the polymer chain. The third one remains free and generates molybdenum hydride moieties as the active site under H 2 evolution conditions. Such a molecular structure therefore provides a basis for revisiting the mechanism of a -MoS x catalytic activity, as well as explaining some of its special properties such as reductive activation and corrosion. Our findings open up new avenues for the rational optimization of this HER electrocatalyst as an alternative to platinum. Molybdenum sulfides are attractive electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The polymeric structure of amorphous molybdenum sulfide can now be formulated as a coordination polymer based on [Mo 3 S 13 2− ] clusters sharing disulfide ligands.
Recent Advances in the Development of Toll-like Receptor Agonist-Based Vaccine Adjuvants for Infectious Diseases
Vaccines are powerful tools for controlling microbial infections and preventing epidemic diseases. Efficient inactive, subunit, or viral-like particle vaccines usually rely on a safe and potent adjuvant to boost the immune response to the antigen. After a slow start, over the last decade there has been increased developments on adjuvants for human vaccines. The development of adjuvants has paralleled our increased understanding of the molecular mechanisms for the pattern recognition receptor (PRR)-mediated activation of immune responses. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a group of PRRs that recognize microbial pathogens to initiate a host’s response to infection. Activation of TLRs triggers potent and immediate innate immune responses, which leads to subsequent adaptive immune responses. Therefore, these TLRs are ideal targets for the development of effective adjuvants. To date, TLR agonists such as monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) and CpG-1018 have been formulated in licensed vaccines for their adjuvant activity, and other TLR agonists are being developed for this purpose. The COVID-19 pandemic has also accelerated clinical research of vaccines containing TLR agonist-based adjuvants. In this paper, we reviewed the agonists for TLR activation and the molecular mechanisms associated with the adjuvants’ effects on TLR activation, emphasizing recent advances in the development of TLR agonist-based vaccine adjuvants for infectious diseases.

DHHC9-mediated GLUT1 S-palmitoylation promotes glioblastoma glycolysis and tumorigenesis
Glucose transporter GLUT1 is a transmembrane protein responsible for the uptake of glucose into the cells of many tissues through facilitative diffusion. Plasma membrane (PM) localization is essential for glucose uptake by GLUT1. However, the mechanism underlying GLUT1 PM localization remains enigmatic. We find that GLUT1 is palmitoylated at Cys207, and S-palmitoylation is required for maintaining GLUT1 PM localization. Furthermore, we identify DHHC9 as the palmitoyl transferase responsible for this critical posttranslational modification. Knockout of DHHC9 or mutation of GLUT1 Cys207 to serine abrogates palmitoylation and PM distribution of GLUT1, and impairs glycolysis, cell proliferation, and glioblastoma (GBM) tumorigenesis. In addition, DHHC9 expression positively correlates with GLUT1 PM localization in GBM specimens and indicates a poor prognosis in GBM patients. These findings underscore that DHHC9-mediated GLUT1 S-palmitoylation is critical for glucose supply during GBM tumorigenesis. The glucose transporter GLUT1 is upregulated in multiple cancers and may contribute to tumour progression, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, the authors show that DHHC9-mediated GLUT1 palmitoylation at Cys207 is crucial for plasma membrane localisation of GLUT1 and for tumourigenesis in glioblastoma cells.
