Moisture as a Driver of Long-Term Threats to Timber Heritage—Part I: Changing Heritage Climatology
Timber is widely used in the construction of buildings on a global scale, but it is sensitive to degradation. Moisture notably poses a risk to timber decay, and this is likely to change significantly during the 21st century if a high emission scenario occurs. Global HadGEM3 model output was used to map projected changes in relative humidity range, seasonality of relative humidity, time of wetness, wind-driven rain, salt transitions and potential for fungal attack (Scheffer Index). In the Congo Basin, Great Plains (USA) and Scandinavia, humidity ranges are likely to increase along with seasonal change. In many parts of the tropics, time of wetness is likely to decrease by the end of the century. Increases in days of wind-driven rain are projected for western Russia, eastern Europe, Alaska, western Canada and Southern Brazil and Paraguay. Drylands have historically had a low salt risk, but this is projected to increase. In the future, a broad extension of fungal risk along the Himalayas and into central China seems likely, driven as much by temperature as rainfall. The picture presented suggests a slightly less humid heritage climate, which will redistribute the risks to heritage. Mapping global pressures of timber decay could help policymakers and practitioners identify geographically disparate regions that face similar pressures.
Characteristics of people with bipolar disorder I with and without auditory verbal hallucinations
Background Approximately half of people with bipolar disorder type I (BD-I) report the presence of psychotic symptoms at least at some point during their illness. Previous data suggest that more than 20% of people with BD-I report the presence of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs), or “voice-hearing” in particular. While work in other disorders with psychotic features (e.g., schizophrenia) indicates that the presence vs. absence of AVHs is associated with poorer clinical outcomes, little is known about their effects on clinical and socioeconomic features in BD-I. Methods We investigated whether people with BD-I ( N  = 119) with AVHs ( n  = 36) and without AVHs ( n  = 83) in their lifetime differ in terms of demographic features and clinical measures. Relations with AVHs and other positive symptoms were explored. Results People with BD-I and AVHs vs. without AVHs had higher manic and positive symptom scores (i.e., higher scores on the hallucinations, delusions, and bizarre behavior subscales). Further, a greater proportion of those with vs. without AVHs reported lower subjective socioeconomic status and tended to have higher rates of unemployment, thus, speaking to the longer-term consequences of AVH presence. Conclusion Our findings suggest that people with BD-I with AVHs exhibit more severe psychotic features and manic symptoms compared to those without. This might be associated with more socioeconomic hardship. More in-depth characterization of people with BD-I with/without AVHs is needed to fully understand this subgroup’s unique challenges and needs. Limitations The modest sample size of the AVH group and a study population with low racial diversity/representation may limit generalizability.
The transfer of heritage modelling from research to practice
Heritage science is an inherently practice-oriented field that aims to support our understanding, and conservation, of heritage. Research is commonly undertaken using laboratory or field-based methodologies, but given the ethical and scale constraints, over time and space, of these approaches, process-based models should provide a tool for exploring practical solutions. Unlike other fields, such as climate science and ecology, there appears limited engagement with modelling within heritage science. The characteristics and use of processed-based models published in the field is examined to explore tensions in using models to transfer understanding between research and practice. By examining models that investigate interactions between heritage materials and environment, we find that, at best, model outputs may be used by other researchers or occasionally by heritage institutions; or more commonly, the model’s existence is used as a justification of research, yet without meaningful engagement within either the academic and heritage practitioner communities. Some models are unlikely to be used in practice as they have been developed at spatial or temporal scales incompatible with being truly applicable to objects or sites, or can seem to advance theory without engaging with practice. The uptake of models by researchers who rerun or change the code is rare. Models that seem to gain substantial use appear to benefit from graphical user interfaces that make them easy to run. Evidence of models in solving real-world conservation problems is hard to find. This may arise because practical applications are rarely reported in academic journal literature and open access publications. There is some evidence they are revealed in conferences and possibly internal heritage organisation reports, but this gray literature doesn’t readily feedback into the development and refinement of existing models. It is likely the use of models would increase if mechanisms were available to support the development of user interfaces, training workshops and the ability of practical use cases to be fed back to the modelling community.
Climate Pressures on Intangible Heritage
Intangible heritage comprises a wealth of knowledge, crafts, and skills that are passed down through the generations, embodied in our cultural practices. Many of these intertwine with landscape and environment; so, they are sensitive to climate change. While there have been studies of the impact of climate change on intangible heritage, these typically use heritage as a lens to examine climate impacts. There are few assessments of specific climate processes that threaten heritage. A climate-based approach allows researchers to identify mechanisms of change and quantify past impacts and project these into the future to give a sense of management options. We explore the threats to UNESCO domains of intangible heritage using weather and climate data from a range of sources to assess threats demonstrating the importance of data-informed approaches and show that timing of season and frequency of extreme events are important in climate-based assessments. These play out over different spatial and temporal scales that reveal elements of sensitivity to environmental change. The management response to the climate threat seems in need of a rights-based approach to empower those who own, safeguard, or practice the heritage. Research to enhance conservation should be translated into a form that speaks to local values and social structures.
Moisture as a Driver of Long-Term Threats to Timber Heritage—Part II: Risks Imposed on Structures at Local Sites
Timber heritage sites are vulnerable to damage from moisture. Simple meteorological descriptions of climate need to be tuned to capture drivers that threaten heritage, including dimensional change, insect attack and mould growth. Global climate models often provide projections through to the end of the 21st century but need to be translated to a local level to reveal processes of deterioration at specific sites. Translation to a local level can be challenging and requires the use of local information from a range of sources. This translation is explored over a range of sites facing different climate pressures, including fungal and insect risk at Harmondsworth Great Barn, England; changes in humidity range, salt risk and algal growth in rural timber buildings in the Midwestern states, USA; wind-driven rain impacts on board houses in Freetown, Sierra Leone; and rainfall and humidity range on timber buildings among the tropical rainforests of the Amazon, Congo Basin and Southeast Asia. Evidence-based narratives provide a tool to incorporate a multiplicity of local information to enrich projections and the interpretation of the model output. These could build trust and aid decision-making based on future projections, which are inherently uncertain.
Köppen climates and Scheffer index as indicators of timber risk in Europe (1901–2020)
Timber heritage faces numerous risks, with the threat from insect and fungal attack particularly sensitive to climate. The Scheffer index estimates the deterioration of wood by combining average temperature and days of rain. We determined the Scheffer index from twenty sites in Europe across the 20th and early 21st century using meteorological observations, largely from the European Climate Assessment Dataset. Results showed that Scheffer indices across Europe loosely align with Köppen climate classes, which are also defined in terms of temperature and rainfall. However, within a given Köppen class, a wide range of Scheffer indices were found, thus representing very different threats to heritage. This suggests that specific heritage climate parameters, such as the Scheffer index, are needed. Trends in the Scheffer index provide a fairly robust guide to management strategy by identifying locations where the risk for timber is increasing. However, a simple index cannot necessarily describe the complex interactions between biological pests and climate; such complexity is better handled with well-constructed models. Nevertheless, the Scheffer index offers heritage managers an easily calculated estimate of the spatial distribution of risk to timber and the likely direction of future change.
Tuning and Effectiveness in Heritage Models
Modelling can explore heritage responses to environmental pressures over wide spatial and temporal scales, testing both theory and process. However, compared to other fields, modelling approaches are not yet as common in heritage management. Some heritage models have become well known, though they struggle to have an impact beyond academia, with limited practical applications. Successful models appear to be adaptable to multiple sites or objects, intuitive to use, run using widely available software and produce output translatable into practical actions. Model tuning is also vital for the model to be effective. A specific purpose should be determined from the outset to enable tuning in the earliest design stages. Heritage models can be developed to explore theories or processes that affect or interact with heritage. Input should also be tuned to relevant temporal and spatial scales and consider duration and location. Additionally, it is important to account for materials and elements specific to heritage. Models need to be useful and usable if they are to be effective. User-friendly programs and interfaces help practical use. However, success can create problems, as input and output could become socially or commercially sensitive. The wider use of models may require broader discussion among heritage professionals and the provision of training.
Māori perspectives on a potential low dose CT lung cancer screening programme in Aotearoa New Zealand: results of a mixed-method cross-sectional survey
Background Lung cancer screening reduces lung cancer mortality by at least 20%. If implemented equitably, it has the potential to reduce inequities for Māori (the Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand), whose rates of lung cancer are significantly higher than non-Māori. Our aim was to inform the equitable implementation of potential future lung cancer screening in Aotearoa by understanding the acceptability, decision making processes and design preferences for Māori and their whānau. Methods In 2020, Māori potentially eligible for lung cancer screening ( n  = 388) and their whānau/family members ( n  = 103) completed separate cross-sectional surveys about how a future screening programme could be designed and delivered. The focus of the surveys was to determine the level of support for a lung screening programme and to explore decision making and design preferences for Māori and their whānau. The two surveys were analysed separately with pre-defined responses reported as frequencies and percentages. Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare responses between gender, region, age-group and smoking status. Significant differences were further explored using pairwise comparisons with Bonferroni correction. Free text comments were analysed thematically. Results There was a very high level of support for a lung screening programme. When deciding whether to take part in screening, the strongest preferences were to follow doctors’ advice, followed by deciding alone, or with their whānau. An almost equal proportion of participants preferred to receive an invitation from their GP, or from a screening programme. Preferences for receiving information about the programme varied, with the most common being talking directly to a doctor, followed by reading a brochure, or receiving information via email. The results showed clear differences in preferences between demographic groups, particularly between regions and age-groups. Conclusions Surveys of potentially eligible Māori participants and their whānau have revealed support for screening, but diverse preferences regarding decision making and programme design. These findings have informed a randomised controlled trial on lung cancer screening invitation approaches and will guide the development of a national lung screening programme.
“Gatekeeping Family Violence”: The Role of Religious and Community Leaders in the Afghan Migrant Community in South Australia
Community leaders in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in Australia, particularly Afghan migrant communities, may play an important role in understanding and responding to family violence. This paper explores the role and perspectives of religious and community leaders in the Afghan community in South Australia in relation to preventing and responding to family violence. It is argued that these leaders play a pivotal role in their community as they can act as gatekeepers between their own and the Australian community. This paper concludes that it is imperative that governments and the legal system engage with CALD communities to better understand faith related factors such as the relevance of Islamic law and culture for Afghan Muslim communities in South Australia. At the same time, the education of the broader Australian and Afghan communities and their religious and community leaders in both Islamic law and the Australian legal system is a vital factor in combating and reducing family violence.
Supra-second interval timing in bipolar disorder: examining the role of disorder sub-type, mood, and medication status
BackgroundWidely reported by bipolar disorder (BD) patients, cognitive symptoms, including deficits in executive function, memory, attention, and timing are under-studied. Work suggests that individuals with BD show impairments in interval timing tasks, including supra-second, sub-second, and implicit motor timing compared to the neuronormative population. However, how time perception differs within individuals with BD based on disorder sub-type (BDI vs II), depressed mood, or antipsychotic medication-use has not been thoroughly investigated. The present work administered a supra-second interval timing task concurrent with electroencephalography (EEG) to patients with BD and a neuronormative comparison group. As this task is known to elicit frontal theta oscillations, signal from the frontal (Fz) lead was analyzed at rest and during the task.ResultsResults suggest that individuals with BD show impairments in supra-second interval timing and reduced frontal theta power during the task compared to neuronormative controls. However, within BD sub-groups, neither time perception nor frontal theta differed in accordance with BD sub-type, depressed mood, or antipsychotic medication use.ConclusionsThis work suggests that BD sub-type, depressed mood status or antipsychotic medication use does not alter timing profile or frontal theta activity. Together with previous work, these findings point to timing impairments in BD patients across a wide range of modalities and durations indicating that an altered ability to assess the passage of time may be a fundamental cognitive abnormality in BD.
