The rhythm of memory
A powerful story about two couples from opposite ends of the globe who seek refuge from political turmoil in Sweden, where their lives intertwine in a poignant dance with destiny.
Escapist Fiction Is Now a Dire Necessity
During World War II, films with exotic locales like Arabian Nights transported moviegoers to more evocative landscapes, far from the roar of bomb sirens or the deprivations of ration books. Walt Disney’s animated film Dumbo, about a flying elephant, also generated some well-needed comic relief. To this day, my son’s favorite novel is Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella, a story about a man who dreams of creating a baseball diamond in the cornfields of Iowa...
The secret of clouds
An English teacher with haunting childhood memories gains perspective and inspiration while tutoring a young Ukrainian immigrant whose serious health issues prevent him from taking any day for granted.
The velvet hours
\"As Paris teeters on the edge of the German occupation, a young French woman closes the door to her late grandmother's treasure-filled apartment, unsure if she'll ever return. An elusive courtesan, Marthe de Florian cultivated a life of art and beauty, casting out all recollections of her impoverished childhood in the dark alleys of Montmartre. With Europe on the brink of war, she shares her story with her granddaughter Solange Beaugiron, using her prized possessions to reveal her innermost secrets. Most striking of all are a beautiful string of pearls and a magnificent portrait of Marthe painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini. As Marthe's tale unfolds, like velvet itself, stitched with its own shadow and light, it helps to guide Solange on her own path. Inspired by the true account of an abandoned Parisian apartment, Alyson Richman brings to life Solange, the young woman forced to leave her fabled grandmother's legacy behind to save all that she loved\"-- Provided by publisher.
Understanding District-Charter Collaboration Grants (Final Report)
Key Findings: * Cross-sector collaboration can and did occur and was viewed as facilitating the transfer of effective practices. * Participants perceived the grant activities as helping to build their crosssector professional networks. * The grant activities were seen as having a positive impact, but the scope of the impact was on a small-scale and generally confined to those directly participating in the activities. * Perceived structural factors, rather than a lack of interest, inhibited crosssector collaboration—and without formal opportunities, cross-sector collaboration may not have occurred to the extent it did. * Although there is variation across cities, most had a general climate that was not closed to cross-sector collaboration, although some negative perceptions of the opposite sector remain. In November 2012, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation invested in seven innovative district-charter partnerships with “the potential capacity and commitment to accelerate student college ready rates through deep collaboration and sharing of best practices”. This report synthesizes findings across multiple data collection sources and offers broad findings from across the three-year grant period.
District-Charter Collaboration Grant Implementation: Findings for Teacher and Principal Surveys
Key Findings: * Across the cities with schoolwide grant activities, about half of respondents in the schools collaborated with educators from the opposite sector. Across cities with grant activities that targeted individuals, more than three-quarters of grant participants collaborated across sectors. * Most respondents reported that the training they received in their grant activity was useful or very useful for their current job, they applied the activity information in their school, and they shared the activity information with others in their school. * Nearly all respondents reported that inadequate time dedicated by their school to collaboration and inadequate opportunities for collaboration made cross-sector collaboration more difficult. * Respondents viewed local foundations, businesses, and community groups as promoting cross-sector collaboration, whereas competition, political divisions, and teachers’ unions may hinder it. As part of the District-Charter Collaboration Grant program, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation contracted with Mathematica Policy Research to conduct an evaluation of its implementation and effects since July 2013. Using survey data from district and charter school educators (teachers and principals) sampled from 21 cross-sector collaboration activities across the seven grantee cities in 2014–2015, this report examined the extent to which cross-sector collaboration and the transfer of practices occurred and the contextual factors that helped facilitate or impede cross-sector collaboration.
