An evaluation of the Expect Respect: Preventing Teen Dating Violence high school program
2009
The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of the Expect Respect: Preventing Teen Dating Violence program offered to high school students in one county in the state of Ohio. High school student participants in each treatment group provided demographic information, attitudes, and experiences of teen dating violence (TDV) via a background information form, the Conflict in Adolescent Dating Relationships Inventory (CADRI) (Wolfe, Scott, Reitzel-Jaffe, Wekerle, Grasley & Straatman, 2001) and the Attitudes Toward Dating Violence Scales (ATDV) (Price, Byers, & the Dating Violence Research Team, 1999) to determine the effect of the program directly after its completion and its short term effect three full weeks after the program concluded. Only 141 valid cases were available for analysis using the CADRI, too few to determine statistical significance in immediate and short term effects of the program on participants’ experiences. Two hundred seventy two students provided responses on the ATDV scales to determine effects of the program on participants’ attitudes toward TDV. A Repeated Measures MANOVA analysis resulted in a statistically significant difference between treatment groups’ ATDV scores initially after the program and across time. This suggests that the program did lower participants’ tolerance of TDV initially, and three weeks after the program concluded. In addition, male participants’ scores were consistently higher than females’ scores, suggesting that males have a consistently higher tolerance of TDV than females. This research is the first step toward building an effective teen dating violence prevention program. With efficacy of the program indicated for the participants in this study, it is possible that other students in the county would benefit from this program. Additional research in other areas of the state and country are needed to continue to determine the efficacy of the Expect Respect: Preventing Teen Dating Violence program for high school students.

Perceptions of African American students regarding cultural diversity at Andrews University
2001
The purpose of this study was to examine issues related to cultural diversity within higher education. Specifically, this study was directed at the system of higher education of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA). The SDA Church is a worldwide religious denomination whose emphasis is on global mission. Under the leadership of Ellen White (1827–1915), the Church has a history of service to persons of color, and in recent years the Church adopted policies of support for cultural diversity. Andrews University was chosen for this study because of its role as the flagship university of the SDA Church. Because of that status with the Church, it was considered important to identify the degree to which selected students perceived evidence of diversity within the University. Five specific aspects of campus life were considered: worship; faculty and curriculum; the arts; activities of student organizations; and other events and activities sponsored by the University. Within each of those categories, students were asked to indicate whether they agreed or disagreed that there was evidence of cultural diversity. The population for this study consisted of the 355 students who indicated their ethnic status as “African American/Black” on the University's enrollment forms. The survey instrument developed for this study was completed by 79 of those students. The subjects responded to 4 items focused on demographics, 24 items that were designed to identify their perceptions regarding evidence of diversity at Andrews University, and 2 analysis revealed that there were differences in perceptions among the students according to their ethnic heritage, as defined by the birth countries of their mothers. Students of U.S. heritage were more likely to indicate disagreement with statements that there was evidence of diversity in various aspects of life at Andrews than were their peers who were of non-U.S. heritage.

Caswell saga warning to other neighbourhoods
1999
Residents in Caswell, and by extension, all residents in Saskatoon should begin to fear what message city council is sending to them as tax-paying homeowners. This is exactly what we fear. The effect of what [Roy Norris] and other media are proposing is that three highways be routed through Caswell Hill! The developer's seemingly simple hotel proposal will fracture our neighbourhood in pieces to accommodate traffic. At first glance, it seems that special interests are delighting in carving up [Caswell], as if it were Saskatoon's Christmas goose. But, in reality, there are no plans at all.
