The Cambridge handbook of computing education research

Unplugged activities as a catalyst when teaching introductory programming
An unplugged approach to teaching enables students to explore Computational Thinking without using a computer. It might appear that if students are to learn programming, they should focus on computer-based work; however, it appears that using “unplugged” activities before engaging in computer-based coding (programming) activities for each unit of work leads to better outcomes for students in the same amount of time. In this paper we explore why this could be the case, by reviewing literature that reports on these experiences, and also using different theoretical lenses (Notional Machines, Semantic Profiles, and the Zone of Proximal Development) to analyse how the combination of experiences can engage students. We also explore how the approach integrates with mathematics education.

Preschool Children’s Environmental Exposures
The heterogeneity of asthma and asthma-like symptoms results in difficulty defining, diagnosing, and therefore estimating environmental exposures and associations with wheezing or asthma-like symptoms. Determining the disease burden for young children is particularly challenging. In the study described in this article, counter-matched sampling design was used to select participants from the Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC) program for this nested case-control study (N= 691, with 412 controls). Data were collected through structured interviews. Exposure to wood or oil smoke, soot, or exhaust was significantly associated with early-life asthma, as was exposure to cockroaches. Multivariate analyses showed that increasing age, male gender, presence of allergies (although not the type of allergies), and the presence of eczema at birth predicted wheezing behaviors in the authors’ study. The authors estimated the prevalence of wheezing behavior in a population of low-income preschool children was 31% with prevalence rates higher among African-American children as compared to other races/ethnicities. Fifty-one percent of those children whose caregivers reported wheezing, however, had not received a diagnosis of asthma. Further study is recommended to compare the differences in the wheezing experiences between those diagnosed with asthma and those who are undiagnosed, with the intent of designing primary prevention interventions tailored to parents and caregivers of young children.

A framework identifying challenges & solutions for high school computing
A global concern in recent years has been the formal incorporation of computing and digital technology subjects into high school curricula. Despite many initiatives to make these subjects accessible to students, significant barriers to uptake remain in many countries. In this study we convened a panel of 32 academic, research, and other experts from several countries, to participate in a three round Delphi study with the goal of identifying ways to improve student participation for high school computer science and programming subjects in New Zealand. The study explored barriers and challenges, potential solutions and future scenarios, as well as implementation ideas for the most important solutions across five domains: Computer Science and Programming Standards, Resources, Support, Assessment, and Student-centred factors. Together these three Delphi rounds were synthesized into a framework summarizing challenges and potential solutions, including suggestions relating to the implementation of those solutions, alongside key aspects of a likely and a desirable future scenario regarding high school computing in New Zealand. The framework, which is the major result of this study, was designed with the intention to summarise and present potential ways to increase student participation and engagement for computer science and programming standards. We hope that this framework will be of interest to government, teachers, schools, industry, universities and other key stakeholders.
Extreme Winter Storms
Winter Storm Uri, one of the coldest in decades, brought snow and ice to Texas along with record subfreezing temperatures for 5 days February 13–17, 2021, and was followed by Winter Storm Viola, which brought more of the same February 18–19, 2021. Millions of Texans lost electricity and clean, running water for several days, which some suggest was due in part to a state-regulated energy market. Many Texas schools shut down for the entire week, as the death toll rose from these storms due to hypothermia and exposure, carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, drowning, and poor road conditions. Not only were COVID-19 vaccinations halted due to impassable roads but also Texas hospitals struggled to provide electricity and water pressure needed to perform life-saving medical treatments for their patients. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the historic winter storm event, identify vulnerable populations and key public health policies, and highlight the potential environmental public health risks associated with the storms.
Experiential Learning in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging
As the healthcare industry becomes increasingly competi tive, organizations must recognize the value of a diverse workforce. Future leaders in healthcare administration will play a vital role in shifting organizational perspectives and actively seeking out unique individuals from diverse backgrounds. By embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) principles, healthcare organizations can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment, which ultimately leads to improved patient care and outcomes. The integration of DEIB education in healthcare administration programs is a positive step toward addressing workforce challenges and cultivating a more inclusive healthcare sys tem. Second year graduate students in their final course in a Masters Science in Health Services Administration (HSA) program were provided education and tools to develop DEIB plans. Exposure to university leadership and an external stakeholder with DEIB expertise and experiences further enhance the students' understanding of the Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) population. The five-step DEIB plan template used by the students allows them to identify gaps in their own organizations and develop strategies to mitigate those gaps. This handson approach enables students to gain practical experience in fostering DEIB within healthcare settings. Addressing workforce issues such as staff shortages and turnover while promoting DEIB is crucial for creating a more inclusive and effective healthcare system.
Neural Network Modelling and Dynamical System Theory
Recent studies have explored the organization of player movements in team sports using a range of statistical tools. However, the factors that best explain the performance of association football teams remain elusive. Arguably, this is due to the high-dimensional behavioural outputs that illustrate the complex, evolving configurations typical of team games. According to dynamical system analysts, movement patterns in team sports exhibit nonlinear self-organizing features. Nonlinear processing tools (i.e. Artificial Neural Networks; ANNs) are becoming increasingly popular to investigate the coordination of participants in sports competitions. ANNs are well suited to describing high-dimensional data sets with nonlinear attributes, however, limited information concerning the processes required to apply ANNs exists. This review investigates the relative value of various ANN learning approaches used in sports performance analysis of team sports focusing on potential applications for association football. Sixty-two research sources were summarized and reviewed from electronic literature search engines such as SPORTDiscus™, Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, Scirus, ScienceDirect and Elsevier. Typical ANN learning algorithms can be adapted to perform pattern recognition and pattern classification. Particularly, dimensionality reduction by a Kohonen feature map (KFM) can compress chaotic high-dimensional datasets into low-dimensional relevant information. Such information would be useful for developing effective training drills that should enhance self-organizing coordination among players. We conclude that ANN-based qualitative analysis is a promising approach to understand the dynamical attributes of association football players.
