This is a compendium of critical art writings by 20th-century Arab intellectuals and artists that explore the formation of a global modernism through debates on originality, public space, spiritualism and art, postcolonial exhibition politics, and Arab nationalism, among many other topics. Modern Art in the Arab World: Primary Documents offers an unprecedented resource for the study of modernism: a compendium of critical art writings by twentieth-century Arab intellectuals and artists. The selection of texts-many of which appear here for the first time in English-includes manifestos, essays, transcripts of roundtable discussions, diary entries, exhibition guest-book comments, letters, and more. Traversing empires and nation-states, diasporas and speculative cultural and political federations, these documents bring light to the formation of a global modernism, through debates on originality, public space, spiritualism and art, postcolonial exhibition politics, and Arab nationalism, among many other topics. The collection is framed chronologically, and includes contextualizing commentaries to assist readers in navigating its broad geographic and historical scope. Interspersed throughout the volume are sixteen contemporary essays: writings by scholars on key terms and events as well as personal reflections by modern artists who were themselves active in the histories under consideration. A newly commissioned essay by historian and Arab-studies scholar Ussama Makdisi provides a historical overview of the region's intertwined political and cultural developments during the twentieth century. Modern Art in the Arab World is an essential addition to the investigation of modernism and its global manifestations. Publication of the Museum of Modern Art Distributed by Duke University Press

Biography
2014
An entirely revised and updated edition of the
best-selling 2001 original This collection of
biographical essays, written by thirty-four noted historians and
political scientists, chronicles the times, careers, challenges,
leadership, and legacies of the fifty-seven men and one woman who
have served as the state's highest elected official. The book is
organized chronologically into six sections that cover
Alabama’s years as a US territory and its early statehood,
the 1840s through the Civil War and Reconstruction, the late
nineteenth-century Bourbon era, twentieth-century progressive and
wartime governors, the Civil Rights era and George
Wallace’s period of influence, and recent chief executives
in the post-Wallace era. The political careers of these
fifty-eight individuals reflect the story of Alabama itself.
Taken together, these essays provide a unified history of the
state, with its recurring themes of race, federal-state
relations, tensions between north and south Alabama, economic
development, taxation, and education.
Alabama Governors expertly delineates the decisions and
challenges of the chief executives, their policy initiatives,
their accomplishments and failures, and the lasting impact of
their terms. The book also includes the true and sometimes
scandalous anecdotes that pepper Alabama’s storied history.
Several of the state's early governors fought duels; one killed
his wife's lover. A Reconstruction era-governor barricaded
himself in his office and refused to give it up when voters
failed to reelect him. A twentieth-century governor, an alumnus
of Yale, served as an officer in the Ku Klux Klan. This entirely
updated and revised edition includes enlarged and enhanced images
of each governor. Published as Alabama prepares for its
sixty-fourth gubernatorial election, Alabama Governors is certain
to become a valuable resource for teachers, students, librarians,
journalists, and anyone interested in the colorful history of
Alabama politics.

2013
Redefining Mainstream Popular Music is a collection of seventeen essays that critically examines the idea of the \"mainstream\" in and across a variety of popular music styles and contexts. Notions of what is popular vary across generations and cultures - what may have been considered alternative to one group may be perceived as mainstream to another. Incorporating a wide range of popular music texts, genres, scenes, practices and technologies from the United Kingdom, North America, Australia and New Zealand, the authors theoretically challenge and augment our understanding of how the mainstream is understood and functions in the overlapping worlds of popular music production, consumption and scholarship. Spanning the local and the global, the historic and contemporary, the iconic and the everyday, the book covers a broad range of genres, from punk to grunge to hip-hop, while also considering popular music through other mediums, including mash-ups and the music of everyday work life. Redefining Mainstream Popular Music provides readers with an innovative and nuanced perspective of what it means to be mainstream.

Understanding Design and Technology in Primary Schools
1996,2002
Teaching design and technology to young children has set new challenges for primary school managers, teachers, pupils and parents. Through the use of frank and detailed case studies, this book reveals the teaching aims and methods adopted by teachers, the issues they face in making their work effective, and the experiences of their pupils in learning design and technology. Extensive first hand evidence of classroon experience is provided by the teachers. The collection describes how action research can be done. It then provides practical examples of teachers introducing changes in the curriculum, in their teaching and in their use of evidence in monitoring teaching, as a result of this kind of research. Student teachers, teachers, parents and curriculum managers will all benefit from the insights offered by this wealth of practical accounts.
