\"Following his sweeping exploration of landscape in 2012 at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, published in the phenomenally successful David Hockney: A Bigger Picture, this new volume looks exclusively at a new series of portraits that David Hockney, one of the most famous artists in the world, has been painting recently. In 2012, Hockney returned to California, where he had lived and worked for long periods. There followed a series of painted portraits, the subjects of which ranged from studio assistants and office staff to family, friends, and long-term acquaintances. Also included are a number of fellow artists, curators, and gallerists, including John Baldessari and Larry Gagosian. Reproduced in stunning colorplates the paintings are shown alongside revealing images of the works in various stages of development, which provide an exciting insight into Hockneys painterly process. The book is introduced with two important new texts. This vivid series of portraits, executed in bold acrylics, observant and full of life, marks Hockneys vibrant return to Technicolor form.\" -- Amazon.com

The Japanese artist Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889), a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, has been described as Japan's first political cartoonist; indeed, the sharp satirical edge to his paintings often placed him on the wrong side of the law. The politically turbulent times in which Kyosai lived are reflected in his riotous images, in which skeletons, demons and ghosts rub shoulders with classically rendered ukiyo-e courtesans. Among his most charming and inventive works are his brilliant depictions of animals - crows, frogs and elephants, among many others - which often stand in for political figures of the day. Kyosai's important place in the art of Japan is here explored in depth by Koto Sadamura, a leading authority on the artist, in this catalogue of the exceptionally rich holdings of the Israel Goldman Collection.00Exhibition: Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (19.03.-19.06.2022).

\"This book is the first in English to explore the essential role that Henri Matisse's personal collection of objects played in his studio practice. The artist traveled with his collection even to temporary residences, and letters to family members often included requests for objects to be moved to where he was working, revealing them to be critical creative stimulants. Featured frequently in the modern master's bold paintings, drawings and cutouts, and influencing the development of his work in sculpture, Matisse's objects formed a secret history hiding in plain sight.\"--Publisher's description
