Population structure and parasite fauna of stone moroko, Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck et Schlegel, 1846) in a watercourse of the Oder catchment area ('Central Plains' European Ecoregion)
The stone moroko (Pseudorasbora parva) is an invasive species which spreads rapidly in European water bodies and occupies free ecological niches. In the years 2019-2020, monthly analyses of its population structure were carried out in the Wardynka River (western Poland), determining the age, size (TL and SL), body weight, growth, Fulton's condition factor, and the parameters of the length-weight relationship. In addition, quantitative descriptions of the parasite communities were made. End-point PCR was used to verify the presence of Sphaerothecum destruens in the fish. The age structure of the population was dominated by fish at the age of 1+ to 3+, and the maximum age was 5 + . The TL of the fish ranged from 2.50 to 10.60 cm (average 6.24 cm), SL from 2.10 to 9.50 cm (average 5.20 cm), and body weight from 0.15 to 11.43 g (average 2.74 g). The average body weight and length of males were higher than in females. The average Fulton's condition factor for the whole sample was 1.44 ± 0.24 and was similar for both sexes. The slope of the regression line (b > 3) indicates an allometric relationship between the length and weight of fish of both sexes. Back-calculated estimates of standard length fitted the von Bertalanffy growth function, although Taylor's criterion showed that the asymptotic length (Linf) was overestimated. Comparison of the von Bertalanffy growth function parameters revealed differences between sexes. The presence of parasites not previously recorded in stone moroko in Poland was confirmed: Dactylogyrus squameus, Phyllodistomum elongatum, P. folium, Posthodiplostomum cuticola (metacercaria), and Bivalvia gen. sp. (glochidia). Electrophoresis of the end-point PCR product did not reveal any signs of amplification for either of the primer sets used. S. destruens was not detected in any of the analysed samples of stone moroko.
Helminth community structure study on urban and forest blackbird (Turdus merula L.) populations in relation to seasonal bird migration on the south Baltic Sea coast (NW Poland)
The aim of the study was to compare helminth community structure of urban and forest blackbird populations. 24 helminth species in 98 blackbirds were found. Higher species richness was noted in the forest population of the blackbird (23 species) in comparison to the urban population (14 species). The response of the helminth fauna to a synanthropic habitat, contrary to a natural habitat, consists in a significant reduction in most parasitological parameters. Higher species richness has been noted in spring (17 species) than in autumn (14 species). Urban habitat, in contrast to the forest, may cause changes in the abundance of helminth communities in male and female blackbirds. The helminth fauna of nestlings, in spite of low species richness is characterized by a higher prevalence and intensity of infection in comparison to blackbirds feeding on their own. Helminth fauna of the blackbird seems to be a good indicator of environmental quality.
Digenean communities in the tufted duck Aythya fuligula (L., 1758) and greater scaup A. marila (L., 1761) wintering in the north-west of Poland
A total of 124 specimens of the tufted duck, Aythya fuligula, and 63 greater scaup, A. marila, were examined for digenean parasites. Both duck species, which overwinter in a coastal lake connected with the southern Baltic (north-west Poland) were found to support Amblosoma exile, Cyathocotyle prussica,Paracoenogonimus ovatus, Australapatemon minor, Cotylurus cornutus, Echinoparyphium recurvatum, Echinostoma revolutum and Notocotylus attenuatus. In addition, the tufted duck hosted Hypoderaeum conoideum, Bilharziella polonica, Neoeucotyle zakharovi, Renicola mediovitellata, Psilochasmus oxyurus, Psilostomum brevicolle and Cryptocotyle concava; Echinostoma nordiana occurred in the greater scaup only. The two duck species differed significantly in the intensity and abundance of their digenean infection. Aythya marila harboured higher intensity levels and a wider assemblage of digeneans than A. fuligula, and this was likely to be due to differences in the pre-wintering exposure of the duck species to infective stages of these freshwater digeneans. Digenean communities in both duck species, strongly dominated by E. recurvatum, were relatively similar in their structure. No significant sex-dependent differences in digenean infections were revealed, except for the infection with N. attenuatus in A. fuligula. Similarly, there were no significant age-dependent differences (adult versus immature birds) in digenean infections, except for that with N. attenuatus in A. fuligula. The structural similarity between digenean communities in the two duck species is most likely an effect of overlapping diets based on freshwater molluscs, components of the digenean transmission pathway to definitive hosts.
Chordatortilis crassicauda Mendonça et Rodriguez, 1965 (Spirurida, Acuariidae) in wren Troglodytes troglodytes (Passeriformes) in Europe: a new host and geographical record
IThe nematode Chordatortilis crassicauda Mendonҫa et Rodriguez, 1965 (Nematoda, Acuariidae)had previously been recorded only one time, in Brazil, as a parasite of T. musculus musculus Naumann.Thus the record of this species in Poland, in Europe, on another continent and in a different species of the genus Troglodytes, is worthy of presentation. The aim of the study is to document the resence of Chordatortilis crassicauda (Nematoda, Acuariidae) in the Wren Troglodytes troglodytes. Four Chordatortilis crassicauda individuals (three female and one male) were found between the proventriculus and muscular stomach of one T. troglodytes individual (adult female) collected in the village of Wicie on the Baltic Coast (north-western Poland) on 28 April 2013. The Wren is a new hostrecord for C. crassicauda. The fact that C. crassicauda had not previously been recorded in Europe may indicate that it is a rare species, specific to birds of the genus Troglodytes, which seldom undergo necropsy.
Diplostomum and Ornithodiplostomum scardinii (Diplostomidae, Digenea) species from naturally infected birds (Anatinae) in the Czech Republic and in Poland: morphological, morphometric and ecological features
The study aimed to describe morphological and morphometric characteristics of species representing the genera Diplostomum Nordmann, 1832 and Ornithodiplostomum Dubois, 1936, originating from naturally infected birds in the Czech Republic and in Poland, and to compare their species richness and the intensity of infection in their avian hosts. Diplostomum mergi Dubois, 1932, D. parviventosum Dubois, 1932, D. phoxini (Faust, 1918), D. pusillum (Dubois, 1928), and Ornithodiplostomum scardinii (Schulman, 1952) were found in the gossander (Mergus merganser). D. parviventosum was found in the velvet scoter (Melanitta fusca). D. pungitii Shigin, 1965 was found in the tufted duck (Aythya fuligula), common eider (Somateria mollissima), common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula), and in the long-tailed duck (Clangula hyemalis). D. spathaceum (Rudolphi, 1819) was found in the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). Morphology and morphometry of those Diplostomum species from the Czech Republic and from Poland were not analyzed before. The morphological and morphometric description of the adult form of O. scardinii presented in this study has been the first such description of a specimen obtained from a naturally infected bird. The highest intensity of infection was observed in the gossander (D. pusillum and D. mergi). Study results provided new data on the occurrence of the Diplostomum and O. scardinii trematodes in the Czech Republic and in Poland.
Morphological and molecular characterization of adult worms of Leucochloridium paradoxum Carus, 1835 and L. perturbatum Pojmańska, 1969 (Digenea: Leucochloridiidae) from the great tit, Parus major L., 1758 and similarity with the sporocyst stages
Unlike the sporocyst stages, adult leucochloridiid digeneans are difficult to differentiate. Sporocyst broodsacs can be identified on the basis of their colour and banding pattern, but in the absence of broodsacs and when experimental infection cannot be performed, tentative morphological identification needs to be verified, and molecular techniques offer a tool to do this. In this study, adult leucochloridiid digeneans were collected from the great tit (Parus major) found dead at three localities at or near the Baltic Sea coast (Hel, Bukowo-Kopań and Szczecin) in northern Poland. On the basis of differences in their morphological characters, Hel specimens were tentatively assigned to Leucochloridium perturbatum, Bukowo-Kopań and Szczecin specimens being identified tentatively as L. paradoxum. Subsequent ribosomal DNA sequence analysis confirmed the identification of these leucochloridiid flukes. Nucleotide sequences discriminating between the two species were identical to those used by earlier authors as characteristic of two distinctly different sporocyst broodsacs representing L. perturbatum and L. paradoxum.

Study on the Structure of Lignin Isolated from Wood Under Acidic Conditions
Lignin obtained in acidic conditions is a waste product in various technological processes like sulfite pulping, organosolv pulping, or bioethanol production. Knowing the structure of the lignin enables its use in high-value-added applications. In this paper, the lignin structure isolated from L. and × wood in acidic conditions was investigated. Two methods of lignin isolation (Klason method and a method using a sulfuric and phosphoric acid mixture) were compared. Additionally, lignin acetylation was performed. The lignin samples were analyzed using different instrumental techniques, such as size exclusion chromatography (SEC), attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the studies carried out, it was found out that the lignin isolated from pine and poplar wood in acidic conditions had a highly condensed structure. This was evidenced by the high-weight average molar mass of lignin (up to 118,700 g/mol) and the precipitates, aggregates, and agglomerates on its surface. Moreover, the characteristic signals of condensed lignin in ATR-FTIR analysis (band with wavenumber of 767 cm ) and their decrease/disappearance (band that usually occurs with a wavenumber of about 814 cm ) were observed. Lignin acetylation and analysis in the 0.5% LiCl/DMAc system have proven particularly effective in the case of the condensed poplar lignin. The beneficial effect of lignin acetylation was confirmed by SEM analysis. The high-molecular-weight condensed lignin, despite some of its problematic properties connected mainly with solubility, is a valuable substance that can be used for different applications (carbon fibers or as an additive for thermoplastic blends), which was confirmed by the studies in this paper and the findings of other scientists.
Molecular targets for antifungals in amino acid and protein biosynthetic pathways
Fungi cause death of over 1.5 million people every year, while cutaneous mycoses are among the most common infections in the world. Mycoses vary greatly in severity, there are long-term skin (ringworm), nail or hair infections (tinea capitis), recurrent like vaginal candidiasis or severe, life-threatening systemic, multiorgan infections. In the last few years, increasing importance is attached to the health and economic problems caused by fungal pathogens. There is a growing need for improvement of the availability of antifungal drugs, decreasing their prices and reducing side effects. Searching for novel approaches in this respect, amino acid and protein biosynthesis pathways appear to be competitive. The route that leads from amino acid biosynthesis to protein folding and its activation is rich in enzymes that are descriptive of fungi. Blocking the action of those enzymes often leads to avirulence or growth inhibition. In this review, we want to trace the principal processes of fungi vitality. We present the data of genes encoding enzymes involved in amino acid and protein biosynthesis, potential molecular targets in antifungal chemotherapy, and describe the impact of inhibitors on fungal organisms.
Anticancer drugs targeting topoisomerase II for antifungal treatment
Fungal topoisomerase II (TopoII) has been identified as essential for viability. Thus, our research aimed to investigate the potential of fungal TopoII as a novel target for antifungal chemotherapy. We conducted studies on eleventh antitumor compounds targeting human topoisomerase II, either approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or currently under clinical trials to evaluate their potential for use in other therapeutic applications. While most of the compounds we analyzed are potent inhibitors of yeast TopoII, only a few exhibited antifungal activity. Idarubicin emerged as the most potent compound effectively inhibiting the growth of five reference fungal strains as well as clinical Candida glabrata fluconazole-resistant cells. Antifungal activity of this compound corresponded with its very high yeast TopoII inhibitory effectiveness. Additionally, idarubicin ability to be effectively accumulated into fungal cells is crucial for yeast TopoII targeting. Idarubicin, epirubicin, and bisantrene appeared to be even more effective inhibitors of yeast enzyme than its human counterpart. In fungal cells idarubicin exhibited a multifaceted mechanisms of action, including nuclear DNA fragmentation, disruption of mitochondrial network architecture and mitochondrial DNA aggregation as well as oxidative stress induction. Our results indicate that fungal topoisomerase II targeting is worth considering in antifungal treatment and the reported drugs may serve as a starting point for the reinnovation of a new molecule.
