Fragments from Home
Benjamin Alire Saenz discusses his connection with the desert he grew up in. He realizes that his relationship with the desert fluctuates between shame and pride.
In the Breaking, Maybe Something Beautiful.(Personal account)
Sáenz talks about what it mean to be a loyal citizen in these \"broken\" times. He believes that his dissent is what makes him a loyal citizen. He believes in democracy, in individual rights and in protecting the rights of minorities. He believes in the fundamental principles on which this country was founded, including the separation of church and state. It is his calling to remain true to his office as citizen, to remain committed to the communities that give him breath and words and life, and to write for young people. To write for young people so that their hope will hold fast and endure, and that with that hope, they may yet bring into being the paradise that we have failed to give life to.
