These women, these strangers: reproduction and domestic relation between Marxism and anthropology
This paper questions the proximity between two contemporary problematizations, in the first half of the 1970s, of the reproduction of the labor power, in Marxist feminism and in Marxist anthropology. Examining Silvia Federici’s itinerary from the 1970s to the 2000s and then Claude Meillassoux’s analysis of the capture of the “domestic mode of production” by imperialist capitalism, the essay examines their respective problematizations of the connection between wage theory and the question of primitive accumulation. And on this basis, it raises the question of a socio-anthropological division between two modes of generational renewal of human communities, by genesic reproduction and by migratory reproduction.

The article proposes a rereading of Wilhelm Reich’s The Mass Psychology of Fascism in counterpoint to the Foucaldian historicization of the « repressive hypothesis ». It tests another hypothesis, according to which fascism not only represented one of the first objects of a Freudo-Marxist synthesis, but in effect overdetermined its formulation, causing it to take on (at the risk of breaking with the postulates of psychoanalysis and of Marxism) a dimension of excess analogous to that which it posited in the case of fascism, identifying it as the factor accounting for the latter’s traction on the « masses ». In the case of Reich, this would involve the idea of a « natural sexuality » or of an « orgasmic economy », to be turned back against a nazi biologism. It would also imply, in the case of Georges Bataille, writing at the same time, the idea of a « heterology » combining the lessons of the Freudian Massenpsychologie and those of the sociology of the sacred stemming from Durkheim, Hubert and Mauss, which could thus be turned against the fascist mysticism.

The feminist theories of reproduction have been subjected to three types of criticism: they would be either functionalist or determinist, from an economic or biological point of view.. These criticisms are premised on a misunderstanding of the Marxist notions of production and reproduction and on a reified understanding of what a capitalist society is. Moreover, these criticisms have not been able to offer a solid alternative and have ended up in even greater theoretical stalemates, particularly exemplified by dual and triple systems theories. On the contrary, the notion of social reproduction has the potential to avoid these stalemates, while at the same time suggesting a non-reductionist account of the capitalist mode of production: one in which capital is not seen as the subject of a strictly « economic » process.
