GREAT LAKES VALLEY CONFERENCE CRACKS DOWN WESLEYAN TO GET ONE-YEAR PROBATION
According to minutes of the June 3 GLVC Council of Presidents Meeting obtained by the Evansville Courier & Press, the institutional probation pursuant to the GLVC Handbook will cover the 2004-05 academic year. Another recommendation, which could pave the way for Wesleyan's eventual expulsion from the league, stated that the GLVC did \"officially put Kentucky Wesleyan on two-year notice about the competitive level of their athletic program, pursuant to the GLVC Handbook.\" The Panthers also had problems with ineligible players during the 2002-03 season. The use of Eugene Dabney, a transfer from Rutgers, resulted in two secondary NCAA violations and caused KWC to forfeit all 31 of its wins from that season.
TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
Largemouth bass fishing was also termed \"excellent\" by Kentucky Lake guide Dave Stewart, who said fish showed all three spring patterns: pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn. The Crappie Report on the big lake showed both male and female fish were still very shallow although the spawn was apparently over. The scattered fish can be caught, though, when located in buck brush and flooded weeds. Scales Lake in Boonville reported male bluegill clearing nests at midweek, with anglers catching fish on crickets where they can find open pockets in the weeds.
NEW COACH STILL EXPECTS BIG THINGS
[Joe Pechota] also will be counting heavily upon three transfers. they include two junior college players from Southeastern Ohio Community College a 6-foot-5 power forward Anthony Beverly and point guard Ted Clemens a along with Matt West, a 6-4 transfer from Division I Morehead State. \"West can flat play,\" said Pechota. \"He's going to help us immediately. Beverly is a 16 (points) and eight (rebounds) guy and Clemens is a scoring point guard (12 ppg, 6.5 apg), a very cerebral competitor who knows how to control a game.
TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
Dogwood Lake at Glendale State Fish & Wildlife Area reports \"fair- to-good\" fishing for both bluegill and redear in 10-15 feet of water and good fishing for bass and channel catfish on a variety of natural baits. \"Things picked up a little when the weather cooled off,\" said James Smith at Smith's Bait & Tackle in Evansville. \"We've been selling some crickets to bluegill fishermen and big minnows to catfishermen for the river. They've been catching lots of catfish.\"
TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
[Jimmy McCormick] also said patrons, the few who are still fishing, are catching bluegill on crickets in area lakes and ponds and crappie in the sloughs and backwaters off the area's rivers. Barkley Lake guide Malcom Lane reported that largemouth bass are chasing shad in the bays, with most hitting early and late in the day. He reported that crappie were good and that bluegill were excellent in the shallows on natural baits. At Dogwood Lake in the Glendale State & Willdife Area, fishing has slowed as the water temperatures have cooled and the fish have moved deeper. The lake turned over last week after surface temperatures dipped into the 50s. Crappie prospects are improving, though.
TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
Recent reports have fishing slowing at Dogwood Lake in the Glendale State Fish & Wildlife Area. Catfishing was moved all the way back to slow, while largemouth bass, crappie, redear and bluegill were just fair. Monroe Reservoir is beginning to report improving crappie action in 8-10 feet of water around tree tops and brush piles on minnows and jigs. There are also scattered reports on wipers and walleye, which are sometimes picked up as incidentals by crappie anglers. \"Largemouth bass are being taken on main-lake points, secondary points in bays and on shallow flats,\" he said. \"I am also catching some very nice white bass on my regular bass spinnerbaits under the schools of shad on the flats.\"
TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
[Dave Stewart] said the majority of the bass action has been on main- lake humps and ledges, but that both largemouth and smallmouth bass are falling to black spinnerbaits at night off shallow points. Dogwood Lake at Glendale State Fish & Wildlife Area also rates bluegill as its best bet, with fishing rated \"good\" in deep bays and around creek channels on crickets and worms. Redear, crappie largemouth bass and yellow perch are all rated fair. Monroe Reservoir is reporting \"spotty action\" for hybrid striped bass (wipers) and consistent action on walleye by jigging off deep- water points or trolling in Moores Creek.
TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
Even more interesting is the way people are catching those fish. Basically, there are two options for Kentucky and Barkley lakes' changing crappie fishery. Anglers can fish shallow and catch mostly black crappie or head out to stake beds or ledges in 8 to 14 feet of water and catch white crappie. Black crappie are as shallow as 1.5 feet, according to the Kentucky Lake Crappie Project, and are loosely associated with some type of structure like stake beds or brush. The tagged fish that pinpoint those findings for the crappie project are located in Sledd Creek up near Kentucky Dam Marina at the north end of the lake. Dogwood Lake at Glendale State Fish & Wildlife Area reported \"good\" fishing for several species this week: crappie, bluegill and redear. Bass and yellow perch were rated \"fair\". Apparently the crappie are in brush against the bank, along with the bluegill. The redear are running out in about five feet.
WEEKLY TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
Likewise with area farm ponds. Try them early and late for solid bass and bluegill fishing with smallish baits, artificial or natural. Largemouth bass are falling off deep-water points, while channel catfish are providing action in creek channels. Bluegill are scattered, but redear seem to be holding in 12-15 feet of water. Yellow perch are welcome incidentals to redear fishermen. Kentucky Lake is in the middle of one of the highlights of its summer, the willow fly hatch. It makes bluegill very active, especially early and late near trees with hatches. Count on picking up largemouth and white bass in those areas, too.
TRI-STATE FISHING REPORT
Before the last pulse of heavy rain, Kentucky Lake was very productive for largemouth bass on the surface. One Evansville angler caught 30 bass on buzz baits in a day, including five keepers. \"The deep pattern fish are being taken both on Carolina rigged tubes, lizards and creature baits,\" he said. \"These fish are being taken on main lake and creek channel ledges, secondary creek channel points and humps in both bays and the main lake.\" [Dave Stewart] suggests rocky points for smallmouth bass. That includes primary and secondary main lake points and secondary points in bays during the day. Try topwater baits early and late.
