Performance Prediction of a Hard-Chine Planing Hull by Employing Different CFD Models
This paper presents CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations of the performance of a planing hull in a calm-water condition, aiming to evaluate similarities and differences between results of different CFD models. The key differences between these models are the ways they use to compute the turbulent flow and simulate the motion of the vessel. The planing motion of a vessel on water leads to a strong turbulent fluid flow motion, and the movement of the vessel from its initial position can be relatively significant, which makes the simulation of the problem challenging. Two different frameworks including k-ε and DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) methods are employed to model the turbulence behavior of the fluid motion of the air–water flow around the boat. Vertical motions of the rigid solid body in the fluid domain, which eventually converge to steady linear and angular displacements, are numerically modeled by using two approaches, including morphing and overset techniques. All simulations are performed with a similar mesh structure which allows us to evaluate the differences between results of the applied mesh motions in terms of computation of turbulent air–water flow around the vessel. Through quantitative comparisons, the morphing technique has been seen to result in smaller errors in the prediction of the running trim angle at high speeds. Numerical observations suggest that a DES model can modify the accuracy of the morphing mesh simulations in the prediction of the trim angle, especially at high-speeds. The DES model has been seen to increase the accuracy of the model in the computation of the resistance of the vessel in a high-speed operation, as well. This better level of accuracy in the prediction of resistance is a result of the calculation of the turbulent eddies emerging in the water flow in the downstream zone, which are not captured when a k-ε framework is employed. The morphing approach itself can also increase the accuracy of the resistance prediction. The overset method, however, overpredicts the resistance force. This overprediction is caused by the larger vorticity, computed in the direction of the waves, generated under the bow of the vessel. Furthermore, the overset technique is observed to result in larger hydrodynamic pressure on the stagnation line, which is linked to the greater trim angle, predicted by this approach. The DES model is seen to result in extra-damping of the second and third crests of transom waves as it calculates the stronger eddies in the wake of the boat. Overall, a combination of the morphing and DES models is recommended to be used for CFD modeling of a planing hull at high-speeds. This combined CFD model might be relatively slower in terms of computational time, but it provides a greater level of accuracy in the performance prediction, and can predict the energy damping, developed in the surrounding water. Finally, the results of the present paper demonstrate that a better level of accuracy in the performance prediction of the vessel might also be achieved when an overset mesh motion is used. This can be attained in future by modifying the mesh structure in such a way that vorticity is not overpredicted and the generated eddies, emerging when a DES model is employed, are captured properly.
Impact of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media on Quality of Life and Psychological Well-Being: A Cross-Sectional Study
Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a prevalent and persistent middle ear condition that not only affects auditory health but also potentially influences various aspects of an individual's life. This study explores the correlation between CSOM, depression, anxiety, and stress, using the 21-item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS 21), also assessing quality of life (QoL) using the Chronic Ear Survey (CES) questionnaire. The primary objective of this study was to gather prospective audiological data along with information on both disease-specific quality of life and psychological well-being, utilizing validated measurement instruments. This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Central India, involving 182 patients with CSOM. The study included individuals aged 18 years and above diagnosed with CSOM in at least one ear. Patients with a history of psychological disorders, head injury, and those with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and chronic heart diseases were excluded. Pure tone audiometry was employed for hearing evaluation, while the assessment of psychological well-being utilized the DASS 21 questionnaire. Furthermore, the quality of life was evaluated using the CES tool. From the initial cohort of 182 patients diagnosed with CSOM, 32 were excluded based on predefined criteria, resulting in a final sample of 150 patients. The cohort, with a mean age of 34.3 years, exhibited a predominantly female population (63.3%). Psychological assessments using DASS 21 revealed depression in 22 (14.7%) patients and anxiety in 23 (15.3%) patients. Among those with depression, majority of the participants had mild depression. Similarly, among those with anxiety, the majority were found to be experiencing mild anxiety. Bilateral CSOM demonstrated a higher prevalence of anxiety and depression, establishing a significant association. QoL parameters, assessed by the Chronic Ear Survey, indicated a more adverse impact in bilateral cases across all categories except symptoms. Correlation analysis between psychological well-being, quality of life, and hearing loss severity yielded statistically significant results. CSOM with the symptom of hearing loss can lead to reduced QoL and psychological well-being in the affected individuals. This study highlights the psychological impact of CSOM, particularly in bilateral cases and severe hearing loss. Integrating psychological support into treatment plans is crucial for comprehensive patient care. Regular assessments are essential for guiding timely interventions, ensuring a holistic approach to enhance both quality of life and psychological well-being in individuals affected by CSOM.
Utilization of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) Practitioners’ Services Among Older Adults: Results From the Longitudinal Aging Study in India
Ayurveda, yoga, naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and homeopathy (AYUSH) form an alternative system of medicine in India. Understanding the utilization of AYUSH practitioners' services is crucial to substantiating the current government initiatives to mainstream AYUSH in the Indian health system. The utilization of AYUSH practitioners' services among different sub-populations, including older adults, for various health conditions is underexplored. The present study explores the utilization of AYUSH practitioners' service among older Indian adults and its correlates. During 2017-2018, the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI) conducted a nationally representative study among adults aged 45 years or more and their spouses. The study leveraged this data from publicly available LASI. Descriptive analysis and cross-tabulation were performed using a subset of older adults (age ≥ 60 years, n = 31,464). The utilization of AYUSH practitioners' services was taken as the outcome variable. A logistic regression model was employed to understand the independent effect of various explorative variables on the use of AYUSH practitioners' services. One in 14 older adults utilized the services of AYUSH practitioners. The socio-demographic factors that were looked at, including religion, residence, and caste were significant independent factors for AYUSH consultation. Among chronic conditions, hypertension (use-5.6%, AOR: 1.24, CI: 1.09-1.40), diabetes (use-4.2%, AOR: 1.31, CI: 1.09-1.57), and arthritis (use-9.1%, AOR: 0.59, CI: 0.52-0.67) were independent determinants of AYUSH practitioners' service utilization. In the fully adjusted model, the effect of explanatory variables is almost similar to that in the minimally adjusted model. Only the effect of the female gender was accentuated in magnitude, whereas the effect of diabetes was partially attenuated. The preference for AYUSH practitioners' service among older adults is determined by the complex interplay between socio-demographic factors and disease conditions. Though utilization of AYUSH practitioners' service was high among certain underprivileged sections, it is assuring that education and income do not affect older populations' preference for AYUSH practitioners' service.
Synthesis and evaluation of 4-amino-5-phenyl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol derivatives as antimicrobial agents
A series of novel 1,2,4-triazole derivatives have been synthesized by condensing the methyl benzoate and methyl salicylate with various substituents; their structures were established on the basis of elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and mass spectral data. All title compounds were subjected to in vitro antibacterial and antifungal screening against four different bacterial and fungal strains. Preliminary results indicate that some of them exhibit promising activities and deserve further consideration as potential antimicrobials.
Assessment of Changes in the Quality of Voice in Post-thyroidectomy Patients With Intact Recurrent and Superior Laryngeal Nerve Function
Background Thyroidectomy is a routinely performed surgical procedure used to treat benign, malignant, and some hormonal disorders of the thyroid that are not responsive to medical therapy. Voice alterations following thyroid surgery are well-documented and often attributed to recurrent laryngeal nerve dysfunction. However, subtle changes in voice quality can persist despite anatomically intact laryngeal nerves. This study aimed to quantify post-thyroidectomy voice changes in patients with intact laryngeal nerves, focusing on fundamental frequency, first formant frequency, shimmer intensity, and maximum phonation duration. Methodology This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary referral center in central India and focused on post-thyroidectomy patients with normal vocal cord function. Preoperative assessments included laryngeal endoscopy and voice recording using a computer program, with evaluations repeated at one and three months post-surgery. Patients with normal laryngeal endoscopic findings underwent voice analysis and provided feedback on subjective voice changes. The PRAAT version 6.2 software was utilized for voice analysis. Results The study included 41 patients with normal laryngoscopic findings after thyroid surgery, with the majority being female (85.4%) and the average age being 42.4 years. Hemithyroidectomy was performed in 41.4% of patients and total thyroidectomy in 58.6%, with eight patients undergoing central compartment neck dissection. Except for one patient, the majority reported no subjective change in voice following surgery. Objective voice analysis showed statistically significant changes in the one-month postoperative period compared to preoperative values, including a 5.87% decrease in fundamental frequency, a 1.37% decrease in shimmer intensity, and a 6.24% decrease in first formant frequency, along with a 4.35% decrease in maximum phonatory duration. These trends persisted at the three-month postoperative period, although values approached close to preoperative levels. Results revealed statistically significant alterations in voice parameters, particularly fundamental frequency and first formant frequency, with greater values observed in total thyroidectomy patients. Shimmer intensity also exhibited slight changes. Comparison between hemithyroidectomy and total thyroidectomy groups revealed no significant differences in fundamental frequency, first formant frequency, and shimmer. However, maximum phonation duration showed a significantly greater change in the hemithyroidectomy group at both one-month and three-month postoperative intervals. Conclusions This study on post-thyroidectomy patients with normal vocal cord movement revealed significant changes in voice parameters postoperatively, with most patients reporting no subjective voice changes. The findings highlight the importance of objective voice analysis in assessing post-thyroidectomy voice outcomes.
An investigation of load change of propeller in a four-propulsion vessel using CFD
In this paper, an attempt has been made to investigate the effects of propeller load changes against its performance in open water conditions. Load change of different propellers in a multi-propulsion vessel varies and there is scarce research in this area. The authors have made an endeavor to get a better understanding of the factors causing the load changes in a four-propulsion vessel. The load change of propeller has been linearly decomposed into three parts: ship hull influence, pure interference of other propeller, and coupled effect. A series of CFD simulations has been carried out to realize the decomposition of the load change of propeller. Simulations of single propeller in open water were used to obtain the basis for load change calculation. Simulations of self-propulsion with four propellers were used to obtain the total load change of propellers. To estimate the influence of ship hull, simulations of self-propulsion with only inner or outer propellers were carried out and the load change of propeller in this condition was evaluated. Simulations of four propellers in open water were used to determine the pure interference on one by the other three propellers. The existence of coupled effect appears as the sum of ship hull influence and pure interference does not equate to the total load change of self-propulsion with four propellers. The coupled effect arises, because the interference of other propellers is influenced by the wake. It is found that the influence of ship hull accounts for most significant amount of 75.38% for inner propeller and 45.38% for outer propeller. It has been determined that pure interference accounts for about 10% for both inner and outer propellers. The coupled effect accounts 15.36% for inner propellers and 45.8% for outer propellers.
Microarc Oxidation Coatings on Aluminum Alloy Drill Pipe
To improve service life, oxide coatings are deposited on the surface of aluminum alloy drill pipe for offshore platforms by microarc oxidation (MAO) technology. This work focused on an experimental study to determine the effect of cathode voltage on the morphology, phase composition, and corrosion performance of MAO coatings. It was found that the grains of the coatings become refined and smooth with increasing cathode voltage. Furthermore, the corrosion rates of the MAO coatings remarkably decreased with an increase in cathode voltage.
Studying the effect of lockdown using epidemiological modelling of COVID-19 and a quantum computational approach using the Ising spin interaction
COVID-19 is a respiratory tract infection that can range from being mild to fatal. In India, the countrywide lockdown has been imposed since 24th march 2020, and has got multiple extensions with different guidelines for each phase. Among various models of epidemiology, we use the SIR(D) model to analyze the extent to which this multi-phased lockdown has been active in ‘flattening the curve’ and lower the threat. Analyzing the effect of lockdown on the infection may provide a better insight into the evolution of epidemic while implementing the quarantine procedures as well as improving the healthcare facilities. For accurate modelling, incorporating various parameters along with sophisticated computational facilities are required. Parallel to SIRD modelling, we tend to compare it with the Ising model and derive a quantum circuit that incorporates the rate of infection and rate of recovery, etc as its parameters. The probabilistic plots obtained from the circuit qualitatively resemble the shape of the curve for the spread of Coronavirus. We also demonstrate how the curve flattens when the lockdown is imposed. This kind of quantum computational approach can be useful in reducing space and time complexities of a huge amount of information related to the epidemic.
Molecular Breeding for Incorporation of Submergence Tolerance and Durable Bacterial Blight Resistance into the Popular Rice Variety ‘Ranidhan’
Ranidhan is a popular late-maturing rice variety of Odisha state, India. The farmers of the state suffer heavy loss in years with flash floods as the variety is sensitive to submergence. Bacterial blight (BB) disease is a major yield-limiting factor, and the variety is susceptible to the disease. BB resistance genes Xa21, xa13, and xa5, along with the Sub1 QTL, for submergence stress tolerance were transferred into the variety using marker-assisted backcross breeding approach. Foreground selection using direct and closely linked markers detected the progenies carrying all four target genes in the BC1F1, BC2F1, and BC3F1 generations, and the positive progenies carrying these genes with maximum similarity to the recipient parent, Ranidhan, were backcrossed into each segregating generation. Foreground selection in the BC1F1 generation progenies detected all target genes in 11 progenies. The progeny carrying all target genes and similar to the recipient parent in terms of phenotype was backcrossed, and a total of 321 BC2F1 seeds were produced. Ten progenies carried all target genes/QTL in the BC2F1 generation. Screening of the BC3F1 progenies using markers detected 12 plants carrying the target genes. A total of 1270 BC3F2 seeds were obtained from the best BC3F1 progeny. Foreground selection in the BC3F2 progenies detected four plants carrying the target genes in the homozygous condition. The bioassay of the pyramided lines conferred very high levels of resistance to the predominant isolates of bacterial blight pathogen. These BB pyramided lines were submergence-tolerant and similar to Ranidhan in 13 agro-morphologic and grain quality traits; hence, they are likely to be adopted by farmers.
Delineation of Groundwater Potential Zones of Coastal Groundwater Basin Using Multi-Criteria Decision Making Technique
Delineation of groundwater potential zones (GWPZ) has been performed for a coastal groundwater basin of eastern India. The groundwater potential zone index (GWPZI) map is generated by using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) from different influencing features, e.g., Land Use/Land Cover (LU/LC), soil (S), geomorphology (GM), hydrogeology (HG), surface geology (SG), recharge rate (RR), drainage density (DD), rainfall (RF), slope (Sl), surface water bodies (SW), lineament density (LD), and Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (NDVI). Recharge rate values are estimated from hydrological water balance model. Overlay weighted sum method is used to integrate all thematic feature maps to generate GWPZ map of the study area. Four zones have been identified for the coastal groundwater basin [very good: 36.39 % (273.53 km 2 , good: 43.57 % (327.47 km 2 ), moderate: 18.27 % (137.30 km 2 ), and poor: 1.77 % (13.27 km 2 )]. Areas in north to south-west and south-east direction show very good GWPZ due to the presence of low drainage density. GWPZ map and well yield values show good agreement. Sensitivity analysis reveals that exclusion/absence of rainfall and lineament density increases the poor groundwater potential zones. Omission of hydrogeology, soils, surface geology, and NDVI show maximum increase in good GWPZ. Obtained GWPZ map can be utilized effectively for planning of sustainable agriculture. This analysis demonstrates the potential applicability of the methodology for a general coastal groundwater basin.
