COVID-19 pandemic has recently had a dramatic impact on society. The understanding of the disease transmission is of high importance to limit its spread between humans. The spread of the virus in air strongly depends on the flow dynamics of the human airflows. It is, however, known that predicting the flow dynamics of the human airflows can be challenging due to different particles sizes and the turbulent aspect of the flow regime. It is thus recommended to present a deep analysis of different human airflows based on the existing experimental investigations. A validation of the existing numerical predictions of such flows would be of high interest to further develop the existing numerical model for different flow configurations. This paper presents a literature review of the experimental and numerical studies on human airflows, including sneezing, coughing and breathing. The dynamics of these airflows for different droplet sizes is discussed. The influence of other parameters, such as the viscosity and relative humidity, on the germs transmission is also presented. Finally, the efficacy of using a facemask in limiting the transmission of COVID-19 is investigated.

Transient Detection of Rotor Asymmetries in Squirrel-Cage Induction Motors Using a Model-Based Tacholess Order Tracking

In this article, we propose to determine the dynamic model of a squirrel-cage induction motor from a reduced amount of information. An adaptive observer is also built from this model in order to obtain a speed estimation and to perform rotor fault monitoring by Tacholess Order Tracking (TOT). We also propose a generalization of the notion of angular sampling in order to adapt to this type of defect. The procedure is validated in the laboratory on a test bench dedicated to the study of rotor bar defects.

This article presents a mechanical fault diagnosis methodology in synchronous machines using only a single current measurement in variable speed conditions. The proposed methodology uses order tracking in order to sample the analysis signal as a function of the rotor angle. The spectrum of the signal is then independent of speed and it could be employed in frequency analysis. Order tracking is usually applied using rotor position measurement. In this work, the proposed method uses one current measurement to estimate the position as well as the analysis signal (rotation speed). Furthermore, a statistical approach is used to create a complete diagnosis protocol. At variable speed and with only one current measurement the diagnosis is challenging. However, order tracking will allow simpler analysis. The method is proved in simulations and experimental set-up.

Better mixing in the near-field region of jets with their surrounding fluid is of high interest for several industrial applications. Passive control that involves jet geometry modifications as compared to the traditional circular design is used in the present work. An analysis of the entrainment mechanism in the near jet-exit field is proposed for innovative hemispherical nozzles (circular and six-lobed). High-speed Time-Resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (TR-PIV) measurements are used to experimentally characterize the entrainment mechanism in these jets. The distributions of mean entrainment rates, shear layer growth, and momentum flux are investigated along the longitudinal direction within the near-field region of both circular and lobed hemispherical jets. Significant entrainment enhancement is found using the hemispherical geometry as a passive-control method. By comparing both investigated hemispherical nozzle geometries, it has been demonstrated that the lobed nozzle provides higher mixing rates compared to the circular jet. This enhancement in mixing can be attributed to the stronger streamwise vortex structures generated by the lobed nozzle geometry, which promote increased entrainment of the surrounding fluid.

The concept of a digital twin is increasingly appearing in industrial applications, including the field of predictive maintenance. A digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical system containing all data available on site. This paper presents condition monitoring of ventilation systems through the digital twin approach. A literature review regarding the most popular system faults is covered. The motor current signature analysis is used in this research to detect system faults. The physical system is further described. Then, based on the free body diagram concept and Newton’s second law, the equations of motion are obtained. Matlab/Simulink software is used to build the digital twin. The Concordia method and the Fast Fourier Transform analysis are used to process the current signal, and physical and numerical system current measurements are obtained and compared. In the final step of the modeling, specific frequencies were adjusted in the twin to achieve the best simulation. In addition, a statistical approach is used to create a complete diagnostic protocol.

The paper presents tools to model low speed airflow coming from a turbulent machine. This low speed flow have instabilities who generate noise disturbances in the environment. The aim of the study proposed in this paper, is the using of cyclostationary tools with audio signals to model this airflow and detect the noisy frequencies to eliminate this noise. This paper also deals with the extraction in real time of the frequency corresponding to the noise nuisance. This extraction makes it possible to build a software sensor. This software sensor can be used to estimate the air flow rate and also to control a future actuator which will reduce the intensity of the noise nuisance. This paper focuses on the characteristic of the sound signal (property of cyclostationarity) and on the development of a software sensor. The results are established using an experimental setup representative of the physical phenomenon to be characterised.

Deep cavity configurations are common in various industrial applications, including automotive windows, sunroofs, and many other applications in aerospace engineering. Flows over such a geometry can result in aeroacoustic coupling between the cavity shear layer oscillations and the surrounding acoustic modes. This phenomenon can result in a resonance that can lead to significant noise and may cause damage to mechanical structures. Flow control methods are usually used to reduce or eliminate the aeroacoustic resonance. An experimental set up was developed to study the effectiveness of both a cylinder and a profiled cylinder positioned upstream from the cavity in reducing the flow resonance. The cavity flow and the acoustic signals were obtained using particle image velocimetry (PIV) and unsteady pressure sensors, respectively. A decrease of up to 36 dB was obtained in the sound pressure levels (SPL) using the passive control methods. The profiled cylinder showed a similar efficacy in reducing the resonance despite the absence of a high-frequency forcing. Time-space cross-correlation maps along the cavity shear layer showed the suppression of the feedback mechanism for both control methods. A snapshot proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) showed interesting differences between the cylinder and profiled cylinder control methods in terms of kinetic energy content and the vortex dynamics behavior. Furthermore, the interaction of the wake of the control device with the cavity shear layer and its impact on the aeroacoustic coupling was investigated using the POD analysis.

The aeroacoustic field of a rectangular subsonic jet impinging on a slotted plate was investigated experimentally using microphones and stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (S-PIV). The study was carried out with a Reynolds number of 6700 and an impact distance of 4 cm. The current configuration represents a benchmark standpoint, featuring high levels of generated noise. A control mechanism consisting of a thin rod was introduced downstream from the jet exit to suppress the self-sustained tones. A total of 1085 positions of the rod between the jet exit and impinging plate were tested to identify positions of optimal noise reduction. Two zones were distinguished in terms of control efficacy: a zone where the sound pressure level (SPL) dropped by up to 19 dB and another zone where the SPL increased by up to 14 dB. The velocity fields show that the presence of the rod divides the jet into two lateral secondary jets on both sides of the main jet axis. The outer part of the secondary jets expanded radially with less interaction with the plate compared to the case without the control. This behavior affected the deformation of vortices against the slot. Proper orthogonal decomposition was applied to the velocity field for a better understanding of the turbulence dynamics with and without the control rod.

Turbulent kinetic energy and self-sustaining tones: Experimental study of a rectangular impinging jet using high Speed 3D tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry

Impinging jets are widely used in ventilation systems to improve the mixing and diffusion of airflows. When a rectangular jet hits a slotted plate, an acoustic disturbance can be generated and self-sustained tones produced. Few studies have looked at the Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE) produced by the aerodynamic field in such configurations and in the presence of self-sustaining tones. The aim of this work is to investigate the energy transfer between the aerodynamic and acoustic fields generated in a rectangular jet impinging on a slotted plate. The present paper methodology is based on experimental data measurements using 3D tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique and microphones. It was found that the spectrum of the TKE for Re=5294 (configuration of self-sustained tones) is which is smaller than that of the acoustic signal . A negative peak of correlation is obtained between the acoustic signal and TKE for These results may lead to conclude that the acoustic cycle should be covered by the TKE period and the two signals of both fields are in opposition of phase in order to obtain an optimal configuration for energy transfer.

The paper deals with software sensors which facilitates the diagnosis of electrical machines in non-stationary operating conditions. The technique targeted is order tracking for which different techniques exist to estimate the speed and angle of rotation. However, from a methodological point of view, this paper offers a comparison of several methods in order to evaluate their performance from tests on a test bench. In addition, to perform the tests, it is necessary to initialize the different methods to make them work correctly. In particular, an identification technique is proposed as well as a way to facilitate initialization. The example of this paper is that of a synchronous generator. Angular sampling allows the spectrum to be stationary and the interpretation of a possible defect. The realization of the angular sampling and the first diagnostic elements require the knowledge of two fundamental quantities: the speed of rotation and the angular position of the shaft. The estimation of the rotation speed as well as the estimation of the angular position of the shaft are carried out from the measurement of an electric current (or three electric currents and three voltages). Four methods are proposed and evaluated to realize software sensors: identification technique, PLL (Phase Locked Loop), Concordia transform and an observer. The four methods are evaluated on measurements carried out on a test bench. The results are discussed from the diagnosis of a mechanical fault.
