Parallel visual circuitry in a basal chordate
A common CNS architecture is observed in all chordates, from vertebrates to basal chordates like the ascidian Ciona. Ciona stands apart among chordates in having a complete larval connectome. Starting with visuomotor circuits predicted by the Ciona connectome, we used expression maps of neurotransmitter use with behavioral assays to identify two parallel visuomotor circuits that are responsive to different components of visual stimuli. The first circuit is characterized by glutamatergic photoreceptors and responds to the direction of light. These photoreceptors project to cholinergic motor neurons, via two tiers of cholinergic interneurons. The second circuit responds to changes in ambient light and mediates an escape response. This circuit uses GABAergic photoreceptors which project to GABAergic interneurons, and then to cholinergic interneurons. Our observations on the behavior of larvae either treated with a GABA receptor antagonist or carrying a mutation that eliminates photoreceptors indicate the second circuit is disinhibitory.
Analyzing Social Media Engagement of Computer Science Conferences
Context: X, formerly known as Twitter, is one of the largest social media platforms and has been widely used for communication during research conferences. While previous studies have examined how users engage with X during these events, limited research has focused on analyzing the content posted by computer science conferences. Objective: This study investigates how conferences from different areas of computer science perform on social media by analyzing their activity, follower engagement, and the content posted on X. Method: We collect posts from 22 computer science conferences and conduct statistical experiments to identify variations in content. Additionally, we perform a manual analysis of the top five posts for each engagement metric. Results: Our findings indicate statistically significant differences in category, sentiment, and post length across computer science conference posts. Among all engagement metrics, likes were the most common way users interacted with conference content. Conclusion: This study provides insights into the social media presence of computer science conferences, highlighting key differences in content, sentiment, and engagement patterns across different venues.
Confronting violence: Argentine conceptualism from the 1960s to the 1990s
In the 20th century, Argentina went through successive periods of democracy and military dictatorships. The regime of Juan Carlos Onganía (1966–1970) and of the four Juntas that controlled the country after 1976 military coup (1976–1983) are remembered especially for their authoritarianism and their exertion of intense political and ideological repression. Human rights organizations estimate that at least thirty thousand people were disappeared and killed during the last military period, also known as the Dirty War. Focusing mainly on three case studies, this thesis explores the response of Argentine conceptual artists to political violence and state terrorism from the 1960s through 1990s. Through the analysis of the 1960s avant-garde collective Tucumán Arde, the 1983 conceptual event \"El Siluetazo,\" and the 1990s memory art of the neoconceptual photographer Marcelo Brodsky, this research project maps out the network of connections and departures that exists between conceptual practices in Argentina.

Phylogenomics and the rise of the angiosperms
Angiosperms are the cornerstone of most terrestrial ecosystems and human livelihoods 1,2 . A robust understanding of angiosperm evolution is required to explain their rise to ecological dominance. So far, the angiosperm tree of life has been determined primarily by means of analyses of the plastid genome 3,4 . Many studies have drawn on this foundational work, such as classification and first insights into angiosperm diversification since their Mesozoic origins 5–7 . However, the limited and biased sampling of both taxa and genomes undermines confidence in the tree and its implications. Here, we build the tree of life for almost 8,000 (about 60%) angiosperm genera using a standardized set of 353 nuclear genes 8 . This 15-fold increase in genus-level sampling relative to comparable nuclear studies 9 provides a critical test of earlier results and brings notable change to key groups, especially in rosids, while substantiating many previously predicted relationships. Scaling this tree to time using 200 fossils, we discovered that early angiosperm evolution was characterized by high gene tree conflict and explosive diversification, giving rise to more than 80% of extant angiosperm orders. Steady diversification ensued through the remaining Mesozoic Era until rates resurged in the Cenozoic Era, concurrent with decreasing global temperatures and tightly linked with gene tree conflict. Taken together, our extensive sampling combined with advanced phylogenomic methods shows the deep history and full complexity in the evolution of a megadiverse clade.
