High-resolution maps of rice cropping intensity across Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia contributes 20% of the world’s rice production and 29% of global rice methane emissions, highlighting the need for accurate data on harvested areas to support food security and greenhouse gas accounting. However, existing paddy rice maps often lack information on cropping intensity, spatial resolution, and accuracy due to diverse cultivation practices. This study presents a 10-m resolution, open-access dataset of rice cropping intensity, enabling the precise estimation of growing and harvested areas across Southeast Asia. The Local Unsupervised Classification with Phenological Labelling (LUCK-PALM) was used to generate the map by combining Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-2A/B data (2020–2021). Validation at the pixel level (n = 58,885) shows an overall accuracy of 0.98, a kappa coefficient of 0.870, and an F1 score of 0.879 in identifying rice areas. This comprehensive dataset is available in a public repository and can be used to enhance food and water security strategies and refines estimates of methane emissions.
In-Center Hemodialysis Six Times per Week versus Three Times per Week
Frequent hemodialysis and conventional hemodialysis were compared for 12 months. Frequent hemodialysis was associated with improvement in primary outcomes (death or change in LV mass and death or change in physical health), but more interventions related to vascular access were required. When 90% or more of usual kidney function is lost, either kidney transplantation or dialysis is required to sustain life. Nearly 400,000 persons in the United States and 2 million worldwide are dependent on dialysis; of these, approximately 90% in the United States and 70% in Canada undergo hemodialysis, which is typically delivered three times a week. 1 The rationale for thrice-weekly hemodialysis was derived from a combination of physiological experiments, assessments of patient acceptance, feasibility, logistics, and costs. 2 – 4 Mortality remains high (approximately 18 to 20% per year) despite improvements in the technology for dialysis, the development of new pharmaceutical . . .
Unification of Treatments and Interventions for Tinnitus Patients (UNITI): a study protocol for a multi-center randomized clinical trial
Background Tinnitus represents a relatively common condition in the global population accompanied by various comorbidities and severe burden in many cases. Nevertheless, there is currently no general treatment or cure, presumable due to the heterogeneity of tinnitus with its wide variety of etiologies and tinnitus phenotypes. Hence, most treatment studies merely demonstrated improvement in a subgroup of tinnitus patients. The majority of studies are characterized by small sample sizes, unstandardized treatments and assessments, or applications of interventions targeting only a single organ level. Combinatory treatment approaches, potentially targeting multiple systems as well as treatment personalization, might provide remedy and enhance treatment responses. The aim of the present study is to systematically examine established tinnitus therapies both alone and in combination in a large sample of tinnitus patients. Further, it wants to provide the basis for personalized treatment approaches by evaluating a specific decision support system developed as part of an EU-funded collaborative project (Unification of treatments and interventions for tinnitus patients; UNITI project). Methods/study design This is a multi-center parallel-arm randomized clinical trial conducted at five different clinical sites over the EU. The effect of four different tinnitus therapy approaches (sound therapy, structured counseling, hearing aids, cognitive behavioral therapy) applied over a time period of 12 weeks as a single or rather a combinatory treatment in a total number of 500 chronic tinnitus patients will be investigated. Assessments and interventions are harmonized over the involved clinical sites. The primary outcome measure focuses on the domain tinnitus distress assessed via the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory. Discussion Results and conclusions from the current study might not only provide an essential contribution to combinatory and personalized treatment approaches in tinnitus but could also provide more profound insights in the heterogeneity of tinnitus, representing an important step towards a cure for tinnitus. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04663828 . Registered on 11 December 2020.
Measured Strains in Post-Tensioned Concrete Parking Deck Made with Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete
This paper describes the monitoring of axial strains and curvatures in the slabs and columns of a flat-plate post-tensioned concrete parking deck. Shrinkage-compensating concrete (SCC) was used for the parking deck in lieu of pour strips to speed up construction. The 59 vibrating-wire strain meters were installed during construction in the spring and summer of 2008 and have hourly recorded strains and temperatures until present. Measured axial strains in the slab clearly show expansion due to the SCC, elastic shortening due to post-tensioning, contraction due to creep and shrinkage, and thermal expansion and contraction due to daily and seasonal temperature variations. Preliminary analyses indicate that the SCC experienced significantly less creep and shrinkage than that predicted by design equations for normal concrete. Visual inspections of the slab revealed essentially no cracks due to slab contraction (caused by creep, shrinkage, and temperature change).
Impact of Sleep Quality on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Hemodialysis Patients: Results from the Frequent Hemodialysis Network Study
Background: Poor sleep quality is a common, persistent, and important problem to patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This report examines whether sleep quality is associated with dialysis treatment factors and other modifiable clinical factors in a large group of hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: Cross-sectional analyses were conducted on baseline data collected from participants in the Frequent Hemodialysis Network trials. Sleep quality was measured using the Medical Outcomes Study Sleep Problems Index II (SPI II), a 9-item measure of sleep quality with higher scores reflecting poorer sleep quality. Results: The participants had an age of 51.2 ± 13.6 years, 61% were male, 38% were black, and 42% had diabetes. Higher pre-dialysis serum phosphorus (per 0.5 mg/ml) (OR 0.91; 95% CI 0.85, 0.96) and depression (OR 0.16; 95% CI 0.10, 0.25) were independently associated with decrements in sleep quality. There was also a difference in time to recovery from dialysis for the fourth versus the first SPI II quartile (5.1 h; p < 0.0001). Conclusion: These findings underscore the link between sleep and daytime function and suggest that improving sleep may provide an opportunity to improve outcomes in ESRD. Whether sleep problems may be improved by reduction of serum phosphorus or treatment of depression in the HD population merits further investigation.

For example, he laments the \"bloodletting\" of Pakistan-Kasmir Muslims against poor Hindus of India. Any student of history and current affairs knows that India is the occupying power in Kashmir, brutally suppressing the indigenous freedom movement with force that has killed more than 80,000 Muslims, mostly civilians. There are pogroms against Muslims in India, the most recent one in Gujrat, that killed more than 2,000. Krauthammer should advocate the end of the brutal occupation of Muslim lands by the Israelis, Indians and Russians. Regarding the article on Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck [\"Used to Have a Little, Now She Has a Lot, And Loved Ones Clueless on Wedding Gifts,\" News, Dec. 9]: These poor, stumped guests can't seem to come up with any ideas for gifts, since we all know Lopez and Affleck couldn't possibly want for anything. Maybe the new couple can ask that the guests make a nice donation in their names to a local food pantry in their area. Because this we do know: The food pantries are always in need, and these gifts will be put to great use. For [Marc Shaw] to accuse firefighters of doing nothing 95 percent of the time is a gross misrepresentation of what goes on in a firehouse. Aside from the time they spend fighting fires and responding to emergency calls, they also respond to numerous false alarms, maintain all their equipment, go to training drills twice daily, conduct building inspections and do chores to keep up their firehouse. To the average person this would seem to be a heavy workload. I would like to know how much more Shaw thinks the firefighters can take on.
